Mohinder has said that there are four genes responsible for abilities (Parasite). There are four Greek classical elements (Air, Earth, Fire, and Water) and some parallels can be drawn between them and evolved human abilities in such a way that abilities can be categorized as manifestations of one or more the classical elements.
The categories are applied based on what an ability can do: invisibly interact with matter and things (Air); enhance the user's body (Earth); manipulate and/or generate energy (Fire); or enhance the capabilities of the user's brain, even adding capabilities to it (Water).
Different mutations one or more of these four genes must produce different powers. These genes can be thought of as loci for the control of the classical elements.
Air: Invisible Interactions with Matter and Things
Earth: Manipulations and/or Enhancements of One's Own Body
Fire: Energy Manipulation/Generation
Water: Enhancements of the inate capabilities user's brain
All Elements
- Air and/or Water are needed to "read" a power, Earth is needed to manipulate any elemental gene necessary, and Air, Fire, and Water are mutable. Water is involved in a different manner if Peter's dreams are part of the ability.
Unclear Cases
The exact nature of these abilities is unknown, and therefore the element and associated gene involved cannot be determined
- Counters Poisson emission
- May involve projection (Air), or altering perception (Water)
- May involve projection (Air), altering perception (Water), or altering one's own body (Earth)
- May generate the poison, making it Air plus Earth as the affliction mechanism; may simply be Air by housing and releasing the poison.
