Theory Citations Notes
Memory restoration is healing touch, not the ability to restore memories. None + We only have seen Damien's ability once and it wasn't that different from what Linderman did with Angela to restore her memory.
- Sylar's memories have not been restored; he only saw his lost memories in the House of Mirrors.
Memory restoration is more than simply restoring memories. None + If restoring memories is all he can do, it's unlikely that he simply came across with someone who had memories erased and figured he could restore them.
It's possible someone close to him had amnesia, and and he wished he could reverse it, thus discovering his power. Linderman discovered his power the same way.
Memory restoration is similar to The Haitian's ability. None + The casting call was for someone with the same kind of aura as the Haitian.

+ Both abilities involve memories.

Memory restoration allows him to access a "plane of consciousness" (similar to the one precogs access, if not the same) where he can observe anyone's memories. As an extension of this, he can project these images so others can view them as well. None + This would explain why Sylar's memories were simply shown to him as opposed to being restored. It would also explain where he projected these memories from.
