Memory manipulation is similar to The Haitian's ability. None + The casting call was for someone with the same kind of aura as the Haitian.
- It would be dull if two similar looking characters also had similar abilities.

+ Both abilities involve memories.

- The Haitian's also involves powers.
Memory manipulation allows Damien to access a "plane of consciousness" (similar to the one precogs access, if not the same) where he can observe anyone's memories. As an extension of this, he can project these images so others can view them as well. None + This would explain why Sylar's memories were simply shown to him as opposed to being restored. It would also explain where he projected these memories from.
- The fact Damien had to touch Sylar implies that he was searching for the memories in his head, even if Sylar doesn't feel like they are his own, this could be due to Matt's tampering with his mind.
+ He may have had to touch Sylar as a way of extending his ability, not so he could search for memories.
- By showing Sylar his true memories, Damien did restore them. These are the same thing.
+ Restored would mean he felt as if they were truly his. Damien could have shown him anyone else's memories and they would have had the same effect.
They were Sylar's memories, and Sylar thought he was Nathan (and Sylar's mental essence was in Matt's body). This could be why he didn't recognize these memories as his own.
