Ability to: send others to fictional realms

Fantastic displacement is the ability to send others to any realm that has been pre-established in fiction.

Character

No living character is known to have this ability.

Limits

The user of this ability can send one or multiple "objects" (living or non-living) to a realm that mimics any pre-existing work of fiction not written, contributed to, or influenced by the person exhibiting this ability. Upon sending an object to a realm, the user of this ability must set up a 'portal of escape' somewhere in the fantasy world, and this cannot be moved until it is used by the object sent there (though others can be set up with each new object sent in), at which point it disappears. The portal of escape cannot must be placed in a way and place that allow the object associated with it to access it, even if the odds of that remain infinitesimally small. It is unknown what happens if an object accesses a portal that was not associated with (ie -directly created for) it.

The object must be placed in the location and time of the beginning of the story, and may not be placed in a location that causes 'instant death or entrapment.' It is unknown how time differences caused by things like foreshadowing or recalling past events affect the object. The object retains all personal memory from the real world while in the realm. Once sent to a realm, an object is no longer present in the real world until (if) it returns. The object sent to the fantasy realm will have the skills, abilities, and physiology they have in the real world proportional to the realm in which they are placed.*

Once in the realm, objects are free to interact with it in any way they can, while the story progresses throughout its course. While interactions may cause alterations in the realm itself, they do not create a new fiction or change the existing one in any way in the real world. If an object is injured, destroyed, or killed in the story realm, they cannot return to the real world, unless resurrection is part of the story's canon and is available to be used by the object within the framework of the tale. It is not known what happens if the events of the story come to an end while the object is still in the realm. The user has no conscious control over the realm itself, objects sent to it, or events therein, but overextension of this power may cause objects to automatically return from realms they've been sent to. Additionally, if the user of this ability is severely injured or killed, all objects still alive in realms will immediately return to the real world.

The user must have read the work in question or at least be familiar enough with it to mentally picture the opening scene. At least one of the user's hands must be in contact with the object to utilize this ability. The number of objects that can be sent to a fantasy realm and the number of different realms that can be simultaneously maintained is dependent on the power and control of the user. It is not known for certain if this ability can be used on onesself, but there is evidence that it may have been in the past. There are no known limitations to the form of fictional media that this ability may be used with.

Notes

  • Theoretical example: If Peter Petrelli was sent to the Lord of the Rings, he would have powers akin to Gandalf the Grey, but he would not be Gandalf, as that character would still be present in that world.
