There are many terms and acronyms used in Heroes and by the fan community. Reading about the series can be a daunting task for the beginner who doesn't know all these terms.

- ARG -- an "alternate reality game", such as the Heroes Evolutions game

- AWI — Agency Without Initials, a fan term referring to the Company where Mr. Bennet works

- BH — Better Halves
- BNWH -- Brave New World (Heroes)
- BNWHR -- Brave New World (Heroes Reborn)
- BNWB -- Brave New World (Book)
- BTE -- Behind the Eclipse, a weekly question-and-answer session with writer-producers Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite
- BWM — Boiling Water Man, sometimes used to refer to Ted Sprague

- CBR -- comicbookresources.com, the website that hosts the weekly Behind the Eclipse features
- Chiro — a fan-created term referring to the relationship between Hiro and Charlie Andrews
- Clach — a fan-created term referring to Claire's relationship with Zach
- CM -- Company Man

- DHS -- Department of Homeland Security
E
- EDT — electronic data transception, the name used to describe Hana's power
- EM — Exploding Man, a fan-name for the person who supposedly explodes on November 8th
- EMP — electromagnetic pulse, when hard radiation interacts with matter to release electrons, causing surges that disable electronic systems
- Evolved Humans — a term to indicate all characters in Heroes who exhibit supernatural powers
- Evolvie — shorthand for evolved human
F
- F_ — when followed by a character's name, this is a fan-created term for future characters; for example, F_Hiro refers to Future Hiro or Future Hiro
- FMA -- Four Months Ago...
- FML -- Four Months Later...
- Futurelli -- a fan-created term referring to Peter Petrelli from the exposed future.

- GN — the graphic novels published by NBC to accompany each episode
H
- HDYSAEM — How Do You Stop an Exploding Man?
- HEB -- Highly Evolved Beings
- HRG — Horn-Rimmed Glasses, another name for Mr. Bennet

- IDF — Israeli Defense Forces, the unit Hana wanted to join, but was denied admittance by an IDF enlisting officer
- Ikin — Niki backwards, used by fans to refer to Niki's alter-ego Jessica before her name was known

- JPF — Jump, Push, Fall

- LVPD — the Las Vegas Police Department
M
- Mascara Girl — Maya Herrera with her black tears
- MHTD/MH2D — Molly has two daddies; refers to Matt and Mohinder
- Mindrape — a fan term for a character's memory being erased
- MM — Mysterious Man, a term used by fans for The Haitian before he was properly introduced
- MMM — fan creation for the Home shared by Mohinder Suresh, Matt Parkman and Molly Walker
- MNH — Museum of Natural History
- Mylar — another fan-creation refering to the relationship between Sylar and Mohinder
- Myhinder — A fan created name to describe the relationship between Maya Herrera and Mohinder Suresh

- NtH — Nothing to Hide
- NT — No Text, used in message boards to mean the message has no content and readers should refer instead to the topic heading
O
- OG — Original Group, referring to the group of twelve
- OGL — One Giant Leap
- OFL -- "Our Fearless Leader", in reference to Tim Kring
- OUATIT -- Once Upon a Time in Texas
- OWI — Organization Without Initials, another fan-created term for the the Company based on its first reference of Mr. Bennet not belonging to "any organization with initials"
P
- P_ — when followed by a character's name, it refers to present time characters; for example, P_Peter refers to Present Peter
- P/F — Pass/Fail
- Petrellicest — the fan created relationship between Nathan and Peter
R
- RHA — Red-Headed Agent, a name initially used by fans for Elisa Thayer before her name was known
S
- S1 -- Season One
- S2 -- Season Two
- S3 -- Season Three
- S4 -- Season Four
- SED — "spooky Euro dude", used to describe The Haitian
- SGS — Super-Genome Symbol, a fan-created name for the symbol that appears frequently within the show
- sic — a Latin word meaning "thus", "so", or "just as that", used to indicate that an incorrect or unusual spelling is a verbatim reproduction of the quoted original
- STCSTW -- Save The Cheerleader, Save The World
- STM -- Space-time manipulation
- SV -- Shanti virus
- Syhindlar — a fan-created term referring to the relationship between Sylar and Mohinder
- Sylarize -- a fan-created term referring to telekinetical head opening and brain removal, usually performed by Sylar. (Presumably created by Anthony Gooch)
T
- TK — telekinesis
- TPTB — The Powers That Be, used to describe the producers of the show
- Trathan — Fan created name describing the relationship between Tracy Strauss and Nathan Petrelli
- TMI — Three Mile Island
- TNOTM — The Needs of the Many
W
- WBP# — a specific issue of War Buddies
- Wonder Twins — nickname for Maya and Alejandro
