Screencaps

Several are up in the episode image category. Please check there before uploading or requesting caps.--Hardvice (talk) 08:03, 20 February 2007 (EST)

I'd like the episode title card, like the one's on the other episode pages. I think it was from when Matt pulled open the sockdrawer to check out the diamonds.--Lordoftherink 11:30, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Synopsis

What the-? Isn't Admin supposed to write the synopsis? Heroe 22:08, 19 February 2007 (EST)

I am sorry. I was a little overzealous on this one. I am also a newbie on this wiki. I will delete it. Japanimation 20:11, 19 February 2007 (EST)

It doesn't really matter who writes the synopsis. I write most of them just out of habit. The only suggestion I have concerning them is to check out the previous synopses for an example of the level of detail and other formatting we use for the synopsis. This way the synopses all look somewhat standard. But as for who writes them, it doesn't really matter so if someone else wants to write one in the same format as the others, they're more than welcome to. :) (Admin 22:15, 19 February 2007 (EST))

This episode was INCREDIBLE!!! Sorry, had to express that. Bob 22:15, 19 Feb 2007 (EST)

  • I'm with you Bob. Wow...Wow...Wow!!!! 3 times more cool than then next best episode. Wow, was Peter cool doing Sylar and Hiro's powers tonight?

--HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 23:03, 19 February 2007 (EST)

If you aren't already writing the synopsis would it be alright to restore my synopsis and then edit the details. That would make me feel like I belong. I will try to leave the Synopsis open for your writings the next time. Japanimation 20:22, 19 February 2007 (EST)
  • Unless I'm doing this wrong, I marked off what I've done so far: Enhanced Hearing, Dale, and Power Theft.

Footsteps

I know this isn't a theories page. But why weren't there footsteps when Sylar snuck up on Dale? What power could he have used? Not flight, not teleportation...Can he liquify the ground under him and slide like Iceman? Can he keep himself off the ground with his telekinesis? Did he intuit the art of slithering from a worm? The suspense is killing me!--E rowe 22:28, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Simply put, Sylar was using his telekinesis to levitate himself off the ground. He's used it to lift himself up before (as seen in the "Road Kill" graphic novel) as well as to slow a steep fall ("Homecoming").--Paronine 22:48, 19 February 2007

Agreed. He used TK. -- ZachsMind 01:11, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Messing with us?

I tried making out the doctor's name on her nametag. The best I could get was "D R E" which would make her "Dr. Dre" :-) --Fcphantom 23:23, 19 February 2007 (EST)

  • I read it, but I forgot to write it down. I'll get it on the second pass.--Hardvice (talk) 23:40, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Episode screencap

I suggest Peter and Claude flying (you know, when they look like Superman and Lois Lane) for the episode screencap. There were lots of "unexpected" moments, but that's the only one I can remember when somebody said "unexpected". Plus, it's not too spoilerish. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:04, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Actually, the best picture will probably be as Claude says "Do. Something. Unexpected!", he brings the pole down at Peter's head and Peter TK's it. It's a really nice two-shot. --Fcphantom 00:16, 20 February 2007 (EST)
  • I like the present cap of the pole. That was very cool when it happened, because it suprised us, and it showed that Peter could tap into Sylar's bag of tricks, and even more importantly, that Peter can absorb a second-handed power (TK came from Brian Davis, through Silar to Peter), so it doesn't matter if it is a person's primary power or not; just that Peter is present when 'the power' is manifested. (BTW, the best 1 hour TV episode ever...
    • better than the original BSG Pegasus/Lloyd Bridges episode,
    • better than the SMDM/BW-Bigfoot episode,
    • better than the Firefly episode where Shepherd is killed,
    • better than S1999 when the moon leaves orbit,
    • better than the Logan's Run pilot with FFM,
    • better than when the Robot turned evil in LIS,
    • better than when Kato and GH guest-starred on B&R,
    • better than the Grumpy vs Alice LOTL episode,
    • better than the Scotty TNG NC1701 holodeck Bridge episode,
    • even better than the ST TOS Doomesday Machine (planet-eater) episode)--HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 10:03, 20 February 2007 (EST)
      • Actually, Shep is killed in the Serenity Movie, not the Firefly TV show. Which was a little disappointing, since we never learned learned his backstory. But then again, sometimes you just don't get what you want. --Orne 14:29, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Lost reference?

  • When Nathan mentioned that if people found out about their abilities that they'd stick them in a lab somewhere in the middle of the ocean, did anyone else immediately think of Lost? :) (Admin 09:21, 20 February 2007 (EST))
    • Yes! I was hopeing someone else would catch that. I think it's cool that there are little refrences to Lost here and there. --Parlemer 10:36, 20 February 2007 (EST)
    • Yes I did, the Lost Experience (ARG) was soooooooo great ! Btw there's only one good ep on lost s03 at this time => s03e07 =) --FrenchFlo.(talk).(contribs) 13:39, 20 February 2007 (EST)
  • An unofficial Lost reference was the number 23, Mohinder's motel room number, (which was almost certainly a tie-in to the movie "23" ad in the following commercial break), but 23 nonetheless.--IanB 16:16, 21 February 2007 (EST)
    • I think that was more of a cool coincidence than almost certainly a tie-in to 23. I don't know of any connections NBC has with the marketing 23 other than intaking advertising revenue. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:48, 21 February 2007 (EST)
      • Perhaps it is toime we start an aticle for Lost?
        • Personally, I don't see any clear references to Lost yet. I suppose an article for Gannon Car Rentals would be justifiable, but even then, there's not enough info to warrant an article. I'm just not buying that Nathan's line was referencing Lost or that Mohinder's motel door number was referencing Lost's numbers... Now if the motel's street address was 4, and Sylar were staying in Room 15, and Mohinder in Room 16, and there were 23 channels available, and, um, Dale were 42 years old, then you might have a case. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:53, 22 February 2007 (EST)
        • I agree that Mohinder's motel room number is probably, at most, a "soft" reference to Lost - but the coincidence is very eerie that the recent Lost episode "Not In Portland" (2-7-7) actually had a room 23 featured prominently. However, while I would not expect that type of coordination between two shows both in production, it would not surprise me at all if the tie-in to the movie was intentional. Big Brother may not be that nimble when they spy on us, but Big Advertising uses infinite shrewdness when they are selling us stuff.  :) --IanB 17:45, 23 February 2007 (EST)
          • I would sat at best, it warrants a note, not an article. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:58, 23 February 2007 (EST)
          • No argument from me - I never suggested there should be an article - just discussing something I thought was interesting. (My hat's off to you folks who do all the hard work to make cool wikis like this one.)--IanB 21:22, 24 February 2007 (EST)
          • Not everything in the world is a Lost reference. The number 23 has been religiously and socially important for centuries, from the Bible (Psalm 23) to Michael Jordan, to Discordianism. Also - Occam's Razor - since Mohinder's role in the show is essentially "DNA-Man", doesn't is make a lot more sense that 23 refers to the number of paired chromosomes in a human being? Sdmitri 15:25, 22 October 2008 (EDT)
    • Well what do you know? Turns out it was supposed to be an X-Men reference after all...--Hardvice (talk) 02:45, 27 February 2007 (EST)

Peter powerfull than Sylar?

As shown in "unexpected"; peter uses TK he picked up from sylar. Now, peter has met more heroes than sylar and if they meet ever again; peter can pick up all the abilities sylar is picking up now (by killing other hereos) too. So essentially; peter is more powerful than sylar. Also, Do I see a -ve side of peter in ending scenes of "unexpected" ?

Peter stopping time

  • When The Haitian tries to shoot Peter with the Tazer, there is the frequently used sound of time stopping. The clicking of the Tazer also stops. Plus Peter remains in motion as he looks at the darts. The Haitian and Mr. Bennet remain motionless. Then when time restarts the clicking of the Tazer is heard again. Whether the darts fall as some effect of stopping time, or whether it's telekinesis isn't exactly clear, but in any event it is clear that he stops time. (Admin 11:51, 20 February 2007 (EST))
    • Well, I'll argue briefly, then let it go. As I remember it, the darts were moving the whole time, drifting up and down, even though their forward motion stopped. I wouldn't expect to be seeing that motion if time were stopped (although it could still be slowed, I suppose). Also, when Hiro uses the power, the momentum/motion of objects generally doesn't change unless he physically interacts with them during the time-stop; the darts falling to the ground is simply not an effect consistent with the use of space-time manipulation. We might be seeing both powers in effect, but that would be an altogether different precedent. I'd suggest we keep the text ambiguous for the moment, have several people who recorded the ep look over the scene a few times and discuss it, then make a final update. --Ted C 12:01, 20 February 2007 (EST)
      • I do see the bouncing effect you refer to and noticed it originally as well. Watching it several times I can't decide for certain if the bouncing is the result of the way they shot the scene or whether, after he stops the probes, it's caused by him telekinetically throwing the probes to the ground. In any event you can tell from the sound alone that he does indeed stop time. The clicking sound of the Tazer slows down, stops, and then resumes once the probes fall to the ground. This is the exact same effect used whenever Hiro stops time. The only question to me is whether he uses telekinesis in addition to stopping time. That I don't have a definitive answer for. (Admin 12:11, 20 February 2007 (EST))
    • Hiro reversing only the bullet isn't quite consistent with the use of space-time manipulation either. -Level 13:03, 20 February 2007 (EST)
      • That scene bothered me a little because it didn't seem consistent with previous instances of it, either. My ultimate interpretation was that he reversed time only for the gunshot itself so once the bullet flew back into the gun the recoil snapped her hand away. I guess in a world where someone can manipulate time it's always possible. :) (Admin 13:09, 20 February 2007 (EST))
        • My fiance and I were trying to figure out this one too... the best we could come up with is that Hiro is not only manipulating time (having time run backwards), but he is also forcing a branch to an alternative timeline, one in which the gun did not fire. If true, he navigates probability space in addition to space-time. It also pretty much blows the fixed time line theories (for the show) to bits. One thing that does occur to me is the scene when Hiro stops DL from getting blown up in the car crash... he does have the ability to alter the momentum of objects when time is stopped, which could be that he reversed time to the point that the bullet was back in the barrel, then zeroed out its momentum so that the bullet stopped firing, but that is somewhat inconsistant with the use of that before. --Orne 14:35, 20 February 2007 (EST)
          • I think what we saw, was Peter doing a new power for the first time (Time-Manip), and he kinda 'squeezed' time to a halt, but not immediately at the attempt. (slowed it to a stop if you will). Peter sure did accomplish more on his virgin Time-Manip than Hiro did on his first time.....(with the clock hand)...looks like Peter is going to be one powerful dude. Glad to see he is going to get creditted for Time-Manip--HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 13:03, 20 February 2007 (EST)
            • If you recall, whenever Sylar uses a stolen skill (the only other character with a similar power to Peter's) he does so with MUCH better control and power than the benefactor. I think Peter is the same, now that he is consciously controlling his power. --Waffle Fan 01:42, 22 February 2007 (EST)
          • I saw it differently yet. I don't think it was just the bullet's time he stopped, because, before it went backward, Hope was also frozen in time. However, I do think his time-freeze and reversal was spatially localized. Because when he reversed time, had he only gone backward in time as usual, Hope would have had the same amount of time left to shoot them before the police arrived. But, as it happened, he apparently reversed the course of events for himself, Ando, and Hope while the rest of time, including the motion of the police toward the crime-scene, moved forward. No matter what he really did, this example is definitely unprecedented. And Hiro is learning to use his power more skillfully. As for Peter, I think they might be leaving it deliberately ambiguous about him manipulating space-time. But he did acquire that power when Hiro met him, as evidenced by the fact that he was interacting with Hiro while the world around them was frozen. So he ought to be able to call that power up. Eventually we'll see him do it more blatantly and probably see this case as the first example of it. But, as of now, I think stopping the darts is open to interpretation.--E rowe 18:08, 20 February 2007 (EST)
            • OK. I take it back. I just watched it again, and I don't think it's open to interpretation. He definitely stopped time first, then used TK. The darts at first do not show the motion you guys noticed. The camera moves around them and the darts and wires are both not moving at all. And like Admin said, the sound stops. Then they start shaking, which indicates when time started again and he was holding them in place with TK before letting them fall.--E rowe 18:16, 20 February 2007 (EST)
              • I just watched it again. Pay attention to Claude Rains as Peter "stops time." Rains' head moves downwards a bit. Then his head is in a completely different position, off to the side, which isn't consistent with the downwards movement we see just before we focus on the taser prongs. When we come back to Peter's face, Rains is breathing heavily. He's had a moment to recover from the initial shock and is now breathing heavily, and that couldn't have happened if time actually stopped. We also hear the same sound effect (the whoosh) as he ends the effect and lets the taser prongs fall. This sound effect isn't just limited to Temporal Manipulation. The same sound is used about one second after Peter stops Rains' staff on the earlier rooftop as well. Peter simply used TK. --Maladapted 03:00, 22 February 2007 (CST)
                • For me he only uses TK, it's the way it has been recorded that make us think it's time manipulation (when the camera turn around the scene) but Claude remains breathing. I think in real the scene only takes 1second but it's recorded for almost 5seconds so we can see what Peter did. Not sure about his ability to manipulate space and time... wait n see!
                  • If that were true, then Peter would also be slowed down or stopped, but he was moving normally. Since he doesn't have super-reflexes or anything for Peter to see things that way he would have had to stop time for at least Mr. Bennet, The Haitian, and the darts. Claude was next to him so he may have been left unaffected. (Admin 09:49, 22 February 2007 (EST))
                    • Peter clearly could have anticipated the attack due to Claude Rains being targeted first. People often perceive time to slow down during high stress situations, the typical life flashing before your eyes scenario, and yet while the world seems to move in slow motion, they do not. The slow down was likely for our benefit as viewers, because if not we wouldn't have had a chance to see the anger in Peter's face. Remember, Peter likewise stopped a rather savage attack by Rains' staff earlier in the episode. --Maladapted 12:28, 22 February 2007 (CST)
                      • Even if you perceive time slowing down in a moment of stress you couldn't see taser darts hovering in front of you, they travel much too quickly. While I wouldn't have been surprised to see Peter telekinetically stop the darts, it wouldn't have been accompanied by the slowing sound of the taser along with the taser sound returning to normal afterwards. If that scene wasn't to show Peter stopping time momentarily then they went to an aweful lot of trouble for nothing. (Admin 13:54, 22 February 2007 (EST))
                        • Here's my two cents I have looked at both sides maybe Peter used both power stop time would account for why the darts fritzing sound stoped. Then Peter held them in the air and push them down with tk. Or he used tk to slow down the moment in the darts and when that ran out they fell to the ground.

Additional note: Peter gets into Isaac's studio somehow, which apparently is locked. (Isaac's first words to him are "how did you get in here" and Simone has the key in her hand when she comes in the door.) He just appears behind Isaac, though we don't see him go through an invisibilty transition. The most likely explanation seems a teleport, though it's also possible Isaac has a balcony or window he could fly to, or that TK can open locked doors silently and he was invisible. But teleport seems the best fit.--Bradtem 21:01, 10 March 2007 (EST)

    • Just don't put that in the article becasue it's speculation Heroe 21:36, 10 March 2007 (EST)
      • Of course. That Isaac demands how he got in, and Simone was holding a key however is from the show, so it's not speculation that he used some super-ability to get in. We just don't know which.

Hana's Wireless Powers

The power Hana showed in this episode seems beyond controlling your average wireless communication. If the computer didn't detect an Internet connection then it shouldn't allow Ted onto instant messenging software. The only thing I can think of is that Ted was on a wireless LAN and randomly had some obscure IM software running which allows users to talk to people over the LAN without an Internet connection. Either that or Hana's wireless abilities extend to controlling the internal communications of the computer and she can therefore directly control the processor. --Joshtek 19:45, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • The IM program appeared to be AIM. My thought is that "wireless" refers to her being wirelessly to all computers in the world. This appears to be the case because in the most recent comic for example it shows encrypted information traveling long distances. A. because it is encrypted they probably wouldn't make it a wireless connection so that there is more security. B. Wireless internet connections with capacity for video don't go hundreds of miles. Other than that I think they don't have a technical editor. -Zeckalpha 07:55, 25 February 2007 (EST)
    • It seems to be using a non-existent AIM clone called iQkmsg, with messages being called Qkmsgs (quick messages) instead of IM's (instant messages). Peter Channeling Eden?

When Peter is fighting Isaac, Peter throws Isaac and says, "Stop lying to me!" or some such. His voice does that two-tone thing which indicated previously Eden was using her powers. Could this mean that Peter absorbed Eden's powers? He was around Eden in Hiros (?). Or was it him channeling Sylar? Sylar's voice just drops to creepy levels. I dunno. I'm not suggesting to change the article on persuasion now, just wondering if anyone else caught that.Hakkun 23:41, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • Personally, I don't think so. Check out the discussion here. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:57, 20 February 2007 (EST)
    • Sylar does NOT have Eden's power. I think this has been made VERY clear. Peter, however, may and probably does but he never knew she HAD a power. If his power requires emotional recall to consciously activate, he would need to know who had which power... --Waffle Fan 01:46, 22 February 2007 (EST)
      • To put a stake in this, When does Eden actually meet Peter? From what I recall, she does not. What happens is that Peter meets Mohinder, and Mohinder tells Eden, and Eden tells Mr. Bennet that Peter may have the power of Flight. In Texas, while Eden is in the area, Eden and Peter are quite a distance from each other. Eden proceeds to take Sylar to Primatech Paper and Peter goes to the police station. Eden is murdered before the two meet in person. --Orne 11:54, 22 February 2007 (EST)
      • Gah, just found a ref where Eden and Peter are both in Mohinder's apartment in Collision. I'll have to rewatch that. --Orne 11:56, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Hiro Regaining His Powers

As pointed out above, Hiro's power use was a little different this time. He not only stopped time, but reversed it, and possibly switched to a new timeline. After time resumed both Hiro and Ando seemed confused about what happened. Ando asks him if he used his power since he had his eyes closed. Hiro doesn't know, since he had his eyes closed as well. I expected to see Hiro celebrating the resumption of his power, but that didn't happen. I think what's been going on is that Hiro hasn't lost his power, but his use of it has changed.

Every time he thinks he's been using it he's actually just been rewinding time, but he's not aware of doing it since when time resumes he doesn't use his power after all. --BShort 13:49, 21 February 2007 (EST)

  • I think Hiro didn't celebrate the return of his powers because he didn't realize they were used. He closed his eyes, and thought it was a close call afterwards. I don't think he was aware that anything special happened. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:19, 21 February 2007 (EST)
    • I rewatched the Hiro-bullet scene, and here is how I understood what happened:
      • Hiro and Ando are hiding in the bus cargo-hold watching the fight between Hope and Steve.
      • Faith comes over and points the gun at Hiro preparing to shoot.
      • Hiro and Ando both close their eyes in fear.
      • Hiro 'squenches' in final desparation calling upon his power, focusing on the bullet itself.
      • Initially, time is quickly slowed locally to Hiro, Ando and Hope, as the bullet is seen discharing from the barrel.
      • Time for Steve isn't changed, outside of Hiro's localized realm of effect, so he continues to gain ground towards her.
      • Hiro (or his power 'itself') subconsciously realizes that the bullet has already fired, and his only hope is for it to go backwards.(this can also be seen because the smoke-ringlets of the fired bullet that were initially expanding, begin to contract inward as the bullet reverses, as they should.)
      • Hiro's power locally reverses time on the bullet only....while Hope is still slowed locally, sending the bullet backwards in time to its origination.
      • All the while, Steve was outside of Hiro's time-effected region, and arrives running in time to tackle hope, showing he was unaffected by the time-manip event.--HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 13:03, 21 February 2007 (EST)
        • Ah, I didn't even think about that. When he's used his power in the past Hiro has always manipulated *all* time, or at least time for everything we can see in the scene. In this case I think you're right. He manipulated time in a very localized area, and then the "bubble" merged right back in to the time stream for everything else.--BShort 17:56, 21 February 2007 (EST)
          • Actually, when Hiro has manipulated time previously, he has generally used it on himself, which from our perspective makes it look like everything else stopped. This time, he used it specifically on the bullet. (That's my interpretation, anyway.)--Ted C 14:00, 22 February 2007 (EST)
          • ... or was that Ando's power? :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:49, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Felony Murder

A few legal errors. First, while Felony murder is recognized under federal law, the federal felony murder rule would only apply if the murder was committed on US Government property. Since Iassac's apartment is in New York City, New York law would apply. New York law also recognizes felony murder, but the New York death penalty law was declared unconstitutional in 2005. Otherwise your description of the rule is correct.

In order to prove felony murder in this case, the prosecutor would have to prove that Peter went there with the intention of killing Issac, which would be difficult. More likely he would be charged with manslaughter (for killing Simone without intent). --AlanK 04:05, 11 March 2007 (EDT)

  • Yup, that's true about the death penalty in NY. However, I don't believe it's true he has to have the intention of killing Isaac, just felony burglary -- unlawful entry with intent to commit a crime. So what matters is did he go spoiling for a fight, which he was in after 15 seconds. Or did he just go to talk and get angry real fast. We don't have enough info on that. Or does NY law have a different requirement on Burglary. His attack on Isaac might also constitute felony aggravated assault, which would also invoke felony murder.--Bradtem 05:38, 11 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Fair enough, but you also make my point that it would be difficult to show any malicious intent before he got there. (we don't have enough info...) The only witness is Issac, and any half-decent attorney could poke holes in his testamony. Most prosecutors wouldn't even try to bring it to trial. They would settle for manslaughter. In any case, this one accidental death is a drop in the bucket compared to the Sylar body count. --AlanK 20:21, 17 March 2007 (EDT)

Misquote?

I thought the quote from Claude/Peter was "I'm trying!" in responce to Claude's question of "What are you waiting for?" The episode quotes has it down as "I've tried"--Dance4thedead 22:25, 24 February 2010 (EST)

  • Yeah, as far as I remember, it was "I'm trying", but I'll need to watch it again to confirm it. --mc_hammark 11:37, 25 February 2010 (EST)
