The consequences of Joseph's actions proved to be both fatal and far reaching; effecting [sic] more than just the lives of these two brothers... |
Summary
Last winter, the carnival is somewhere in the Eastern Europe. Joseph is looking for Eli and finds him sitting by the fire with his clones. Joseph says Caleb told him that Eli stole something from one of the nearby farms, but Eli excuses himself, saying he's "only looking out for the family" and that it was Samuel's idea. Joseph says he'll speak with his brother about it, then grabs the Prime Eli and says they don't have place for instigators and scroungers like him. Joseph asks where his brother is. Samuel is out back, about to put a knife into a pig. When Joseph comes to see him do it, Samuel says he's not a murderer and "everyone loves a Christmas ham".
Later, a younger Arnold comes to see Joseph. He asks Arnold about his headaches, and he says he can overcome them. Joseph says Arnold has been in the carnival longer than the most and he trusts him. He expresses his worries about Samuel's cruel and violent nature, but Arnold says he's just young and sometimes gets carried away. Joseph disagrees, saying it's more than that and there's a darkness in his brother's eyes. He gives Arnold a photo of Coyote Sands relocation center, made in January, 1961. Joseph says this is the place where he grew up and Samuel was born and that the government built it to control people like them. Arnold asks if Joseph wants him to go there, and he responds that he can no longer control Samuel alone, and that this may be a difficult task.
The carnies are sitting at the Christmas table. Lydia wonders where Arnold is. Joseph says he may not be back here in time due to some work he's devoted himself to so his family could celebrate. He suggests Edgar carve the ham, and Samuel says he'll drink to that.
Later, Samuel notices that Joseph looks troubled. Joseph says something might have happened to Arnold because he, a time traveler, has been missing for days, and says he needs Lydia to find him. They enter Lydia's trailer, where she lies with her back exposed. Samuel says he thought Joseph didn't approve their new relationship, and Joseph responds that he doesn't, but he's found a need for Samuel's methods, no matter how inappropriate they are. Samuel puts ink onto Lydia's back, and she says Arnold has changed. He's not missing in the past - he's there, in the present. As she says this, a much older face of Arnold appears on her back.
In 1961, young Arnold is looking upon an as-yet not built Coyote Sands camp and says he's early. Adam Monroe, in a soldier uniform, hits Arnold from behind and comments he hasn't seen this trick in a long time.
