Interview talk:Nate Goodman
Interview with Nate
Nate Goodman has graciously agreed to do an interview. It will be via email, and I'll send out the questions on Monday evening (I told Nate "early next week"). For those of you who don't know, Nate is a director of photography for Heroes, which means he is responsible for the visual "look" of the production, including camera work and lighting. Feel free to add your questions below. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:10, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Nate wrote me back and said doing a phone interview is okay. We're still working out the day and time, but let's just assume the deadline will be Monday evening still. By the way, Nate is aware of the questions below--just thought I'd let y'all know. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:40, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- Uh oh, he's onto us! :) On the bright side he'll be ready for your questions... though I'm sure you'll slip in some unexpected ones to keep him on his toes. (Admin 17:45, 6 January 2008 (EST))
- That's great that he's willing to do a phone interview. That normally means that we get to read his replies sooner.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:32, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- Yes, and it usually leads to a better interview. We've scheduled it for 8:15 EST on Monday night. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:42, 6 January 2008 (EST)

- I have to leave the house for a meeting in just a little bit, and then I'll be talking to Nate after my meeting tonight. I'm going to print off the questions pretty soon here, so if there are any last minute submissions, get them in now. Otherwise, the question submission period should be considered closed at about 5:30 EST. Sorry for the change. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:02, 7 January 2008 (EST)
- Nate likes to talk. :) We spoke for just under an hour, and he gave some great education on what a d.p. does, and some fun references he was going for in specific scenes. I mostly sat back and listened while he unleashed his knowledge. It'll take me awhile to transcribe this one. Still working on Chuck's. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:48, 7 January 2008 (EST)
Questions for Nate
- As the director of photography, what is your interaction with the director like? For example does the director determine the artistic effect desired and you determine how to set up the shot to achieve that? Or are you responsible for the choice of artistic effect at times? (Admin 21:32, 5 January 2008 (EST))
- Do you have any preference to shoot dialogue over scenes loaded with special effects?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- What would you consider your most difficult challenge in shooting Heroes?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- When doing time-shot photography for Heroes, like the example of the plant Linderman heals, what kind of direction do you get in terms of the number of shots needed to complete the effect or otherwise?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Not necessarily from Heroes, what would you consider your most difficult special effects shot?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Does Heroes offer you any other new challenges that differ from the other works you have filmed?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Of adult actors, children and animals, with whom have you had the most difficulty in filming in your career? Can you share any outstanding examples of difficulty that made you laugh?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- When filming on an outdoors set off of the Lot, how often does filming get interrupted?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Which of the animals you have filmed in your career do you find the most photogenic?--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- What has been your most favorite shot in Heroes (aside from this)?--Bob (talk) 11:39, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- What do you think sets Heroes apart from other shows?--Cristianna 13:23, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- In the photo of the Group of Twelve, what was the name of the woman to the left of Linderman? --Piemanmoo 14:12, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- I think you might want to phrase this: In the photo showing twelve Company's founders, can you tell us the character's name of the woman to the top left? What are the real-life names of the person who portrays this lady, the new lady below her (Paula Gramble), and the two new men in the lower right (Carlos Mendez and Harry Fletcher)?--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:32, 6 January 2008 (EST)
- Yeah, those sound better. --Piemanmoo 00:37, 9 January 2008 (EST)

Thanks!
Yet another great interview done by the super interviewer and soon-to-be Entertainment Tonight freelance reporter Ryan Stewart! I'm j/k about the ET part...but you never know... Anyways, for me it was worth the wait and time it took you to document it. Thanks again.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:36, 25 January 2008 (EST)
- Thanks, MV. This one is a bit more...interactive...than Interview:Nate Goodman, so it seems to go faster, and I'm a bit more motivated to finish it. There are a few difficulties I'm facing in transcribing it: the sound was very bad in parts (both of them had some really funny lines, but I can't quite make them out, so I have to cut them out altogether), Adam's phone was muffled, Kay's cell phone kept running out of juice so she keeps cutting out, etc. Adam is also a very fast talker, which makes it very difficult to transcribe. We were also interrupted quite a few times (dogs, kids, call waiting) so the stops and starts make it tough to sound like it flows. Then there's an entire section where they started to tell a very personal story about one of the actors that they asked me not to publish, so I have to somehow figure out how to gracefully cut that out. But even with the challenges, this interview should go a lot faster than my previous feet-dragging. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:52, 25 January 2008 (EST)
- Hmm, perhaps it's possible to apply some audio filters to clean up the audio quality slightly for the Armus/Foster interview so the non-clear sections don't all have to be cut. Were the lines which you couldn't make out too soft or too noisy or something else?--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:06, 26 January 2008 (EST)
- I'm not cutting entire sections because of sound issues, I'm cutting a few words here and there. For instance, when they were talking about writing musicals, Kay said something that we all laughed about, but her cell phone gets some static, and we all start talking at once, so it's difficult to hear. I must have replayed it fifteen times until I finally gave up. I didn't cut the entire section, just her one line. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:55, 26 January 2008 (EST)
- Ah, kudos for the clarity. You're probably right then that it's not worth the effort to resurrect those few words, though I guess you would e-mail Kay, for instance, if you were unclear of something specific she said.--MiamiVolts (talk) 08:52, 26 January 2008 (EST)
