About
The Fix
In order to explain why they are spending so much time together, Claire and Zach tell her father they are working together on a research paper about manatees for their biology class.
Noah later brings her a book on manatee's, but she already has a copy.
Distractions
Claire and Zach use the excuse that they are going to the aquarium in Lubbock, TX, to study manatees for their research paper as cover for their trip to visit her biological mother in Kermit, TX. Sandra is convinced to let the kids skip school when Claire calls the manatee "a very noble creature".
Run!
Noah confronts Claire about skipping school. She says that she got permission from her mom to go to the aquarium to see the manatee's for her project, but he shows her the tickets, which he knows are fake.
Trivia
- Manatees have been on the Endangered Species List since its inception in 1973. In 2006, an estimated 3,000 manatees existed, up from just 65 in 1980.
- In reality, there is no aquarium in Lubbock, TX. Incidentally, it takes about three hours to drive from Odessa to Lubbock, TX. It only takes about one hour to get from Odessa to Kermit, TX.
- Manatees are also called "sea cows". Zach calls them this, thinking on the spot. (The Fix)
- According to the a prop being auctioned off by NBC, the manatee pamphlet that Claire printed from Lubbock Aquarium's website reads:
Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large aquatic mammals sometimes known as sea cows. The name comes from the Spanish manati, which itself comes from a Carib word meaning "breast." The Trichechidae differ from the Dugongidae in the shape of the skull and the shape of the tail.
