Template talk:Image-screenshot
Would it be possible to add a from=<source> field to this template? I now used a screenshot from another series, and it would be nifty to have the source quoted. -- Cuardin 14:36, 20 January 2007 (EST)
- Why not just manually add the source to the image page below the template? That's what we do with the promotional template. Since so many pages use this template, the less we mess with it (as far as adding variables and logic) the better.--Hardvice (talk) 14:39, 20 January 2007 (EST)
- Because I am lazy? I did just that, and that was what gave me the idea. -- Cuardin 14:48, 20 January 2007 (EST)
Optional category variables
I added a bunch of optional variables to this template. It shouldn't throw anything off where it's already being used, it should just make it easier for us to categorize images. Also, our old images don't need to be changed, this is just for future use, I suppose. I included code to for character, episode, and graphic novel categories. To make it work, simply type the character, episode, or gn name, then an equal sign, then anything ("true" works, but so does "mellifluous" or "goat cheese"). For instance, if you have an image of D.L. from Genesis (I know, impossible, ha!), then type:
{{image-screenshot|D.L. Hawkins=true|Genesis=true}}
I also included variations on names. So, for instance, typing
{{image-screenshot|D.L. Hawkins=true}}
or
{{image-screenshot|D.L.=true}}
or
{{image-screenshot|DL=true}}
will all yield Category:Images of D.L. Hawkins. This also works images of multiple characters. Remember that scene from Company Man where Peter, Ando, and Sylar all get in the hot tub together? To easily categorize it, type
{{image-screenshot|Peter=true|Ando=true|Sylar=true|Company Man=true}}
... Hope that helps! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:10, 13 July 2007 (EDT)
Help
- We need to come up with better, compact help for using this template and have it show up when uploading a file. It's kind of confusing, in that I can never remember which categories have shortcut variables and which don't and what they're called, so I end up having to have the template page open in a second tab while I'm uploading anyway, which actually makes things slower. The easiest option would be to make sure that all image categories have variables, and then a simple, compact table list can be added--something that looks more like Template:Cattable, with all of the like variables grouped on one line--characters together, plot points together, etc.--Hardvice (talk) 15:49, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
- When I first added the variables, it was during the summer when I was pretty much the only one uploading images. I have to admit, the addition was pretty much motivated by selfish reasons. Therefore, I really only added what I thought I'd need. It's a good variable, though, and makes uploading a lot easier, if you ask me. Adding all the categories is a good idea. I'm not very good at making things simple and compact, though, so I'll leave that up to you. :) Incidentally, I added links to MediaWiki:Uploadtext to add a bit more convenience. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:53, 18 October 2007 (EDT)
Galleries for lesser Characters
I would like to be able to compare all the images of some of the characters who are not quite worthy to have their own spot on Template:Imagenav. We could add categories to each of the images, but I don't know if everyone would like all the red linked categories, This is the way it is done on http://starwars.wikia.com. Another possibility would be to add gallery pages, like is done on http://marveldatabase.com, a variable that says what characters are in it could be added to Template:Image-screenshot, and then have DPL gallery pages. Any of these would require editing a lot of images. I would prefer categories, any thoughts? -Lөvөl 15:17, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
- Compare the images how? By artist? If so, Chrisyu's already manually updating a list of characters by artist in a user page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:28, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
- I did know about his page, I even made my own reference. But I wanted to see all the images of Felicia, and others who aren't on Template:Imagenav. I have realized I can use Special:Newimages, but I would still like categories. -Lөvөl 16:08, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
