Template talk:Locationmap
Update
We need to add Germany and Tanzania. Thanks! (Hardvice, maybe you could teach me how so I don't have to bug you everytime we have a new location) :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:43, 10 January 2007 (EST)
- It's a bit of a pain, but here it is in a nutshell:
- Pull up the background image, Image:locationmap.jpg and save it.
- Fire up your favourite image editing software.
- Curse your inability to remember even basic geography, despite having aced a heinously difficult geography class in tenth grade.
- Locate the location on Google maps; feel like an idiot for forgetting where it is.
- Add an arrow pointing to the location and away from other text labels.
- Save and reupload the image.
- Edit Template:Locationmap; copy a row from another location for your new location.
- Update the new row with the proper link and image.
- Fiddle with the values for left and top until the link is where you want it. Use "Show Preview" so others watching Recent Changes don't form an angry mob outside your house.
- Save changes.--Hardvice (talk) 03:01, 10 January 2007 (EST)
- Great, thanks. I'll get on it after work today (unless somebody else wants to take a crack at it?) - I'm assuming it'll be pretty easy to figure out the thickness of the arrow. Thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:31, 10 January 2007 (EST)
- There you go. How's that? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:17, 10 January 2007 (EST)
New Version
Okay, I've done a new version that should be easier to maintain. I also switched to the other map because it's larger and clearer and , well, more Heroes-y. Unfortunately, it's also some weird projection that pinches the middle of the globe and stretches the extreme north and extreme south, which, combined with all the notes and strings, makes pinpointing places a bit hit-or-miss. I've done my best, but please feel free to adjust the positioning (or colors) of any of the pins.
To add a new location, simply use template:pushpin. Specify the link and color, as well as the top and left coordinates.
I also separated the locations by continent and alphabetized them, which should make things easier. Since the div uses absolute positioning, the extra whitespace shouldn't hurt us.--Hardvice (talk) 23:23, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
- Very nice, very nice. Genius at work. Good choice on using the nicer map. Do the colors mean anything, or are they just random? If they don't mean anything, I wonder what it would look like if the dots were all the same color--I think they might stand out a bit more. The positions look pretty good (Colombia might need to be moved a bit more north). Smart thinking with alphabetizing each place and separating by continent. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:31, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
- The colours are totally random, just for flavour. But the brighter colours (cyan, aqua, pink, yellow, lime, fuchsia, white, silver) definitely stand out the most. We could go with all one colour if we want, or we could just get rid of the darker colours. Either way.--Hardvice (talk) 23:51, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
Overlap
- Unfortunately, even though the overflow is hidden, there's a bit overlap on the pushpins. If two need to be very close to one another (ex: Haiti and the DR), it's important that the template "print" them (i.e. list them) left to right, top to bottom. That should allow very close links to still work properly.--Hardvice (talk) 03:51, 17 November 2007 (EST)
- Thanks, that's good information. So they should generally be alphabetical (by geographical region) for organizational purposes, but in west-to-east order for very close locations. Gotcha. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:57, 17 November 2007 (EST)
- Maryland and Virginia seem to be overlapping. Is it the same problem?--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:47, 4 May 2008 (EDT)
