This reads as very confusing to me, but I don't know how to simplify it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:39, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

  • It makes sense to me. Maybe if somebody who doesn't edit portals could read it...--Hardvice (talk) 23:39, 28 September 2007 (EDT)
    • I rarely (if ever) edit portals. I can check it out later when I'm in front of a computer and see if it makes sense. If not maybe I can offer suggestions or ask questions to help. (Admin 23:57, 28 September 2007 (EDT))
      • I'd rather this help was summarized and placed above the edit form, with a link to the full help. It's been confirmed on Bionic Wiki that it is possible to hard-code it there by editing MediaWiki:Common.js, but editing the PHP (EditPage.php) would be a much better approach, imho.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:26, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

Shorter version

Here's a much shorter version:

Adding to a Character Portal Adding to a Plot Points Portal
When adding to or making a portal depicting individual characters, cast or crew, it is standard to use the PortalCharacter template. When adding to other portals (ie. for groups and things), it is custom to use the PortalPlotPoints template.
Row width percentages in cells/row: 15 (1), 30 (2), 45 (3), 60 (4), 90 (6) Row width percentages in cells/row: 19 (1), 38 (2), 56 (3)

When adding a new cell to a portal, remember to organize alphabetically and to keep the same number of cells/row (5 for character portals, 4 for plotpoints). For more detailed help with examples, see Help:Portals.

Please comment asap as I think we should change stop the spamming as quickly as possible. I realize that Help:Editing#Portals or Help:Portals still needs to be made...--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:11, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

  • Help:Editing is for general editing help. I'd rather see special topics (like templates and portals and theories) get their own page -- in this case, Help:Portals. Also, I think the shorter version is nice, but probably a little too short. It's still mostly fairly experienced users who edit the portals; I for one appreciate the inclusion of the percentage widths since I suck at even the most basic math. (Actually, I in fact suck at basic arithmetic and dig the more complex stuff ... go figure).--Hardvice (talk) 03:46, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
  • Ok, added the percentages.--MiamiVolts (talk) 04:22, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
    • I really don't care what version we use. I think mine is too long (and possibly confusing), and I think the one above is too short (and possibly confusing). Can we work on a happy medium that makes it a bit more accessible to the less-experienced user? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:15, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
      • Imho, the text for re-edits should only be a quick-reference help. Unless you are going through a tutorial, you shouldn't learn everything you need to know about editing a portal on the same page as the text for editing it (that's considered spam as you can't disable it--it always displays on edit). The main help should go in a separate article in the Help namespace. As for expanding the shorter help text above, I don't know anything else that should be added (my preference is to trim it a bit).--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:48, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
        • I'm all for trimming what we have currently--especially if Help:Portals exists to go into detail. I'm drawing a creative blank right now on exactly what to put on the template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:22, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Edit Help Pages

  • Do these break like the newpage templates if we add a noincluded usage section and a category? I'm trying to clean out the uncategorized templates as much as possible.--Hardvice (talk) 22:11, 16 November 2007 (EST)
    • Don't know. Why don't you test it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:12, 16 November 2007 (EST)
      • Seems to work fine. Oh, did you remove it before I used it? What happened? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:13, 16 November 2007 (EST)
