Stephen Canfield is not dead. According to Heroes Interactive, his vortices have a "dimensional pull". + While being in another dimension, he may be able to create another vortex to come back.

- The hole he created is very small, and possibly, in the process of entering, his body was squashed in the hole.
- He may have been killed by the process of entering the other dimension, or something or someone waiting for him on the other side.
- He may not be able to return to the same dimension. If the other dimension is not in the same time-space continuum, he can be considered dead in terms of relativity if he cannot return before he dies of starvation, thirst or old age.
+ We exactly don't know what we can find inside a black hole.

The term "black hole" is more a poetic description than a scientific one. It's not a hole in any meaningful sense. Things don't "fall into" a black hole any more than we fall into the Earth. It's just a matter of density. Enough matter gets together and the pull is enough to curve light (and by definition everything else) back into it.

+ Canfield may be immune to his own ability. No one knows where the other end of a black hole can lead.

There's not "other side", there's no "inside". A black hole is an object.
- The other end of a black hole is the black hole in itself, as it is not a hole but a super-dense ball. When a black hole cannot absorb anymore matter, it explodes.
Black holes don't "explode". They can, at best, theoretically evaporate due to the energy loss from Hawking radiation.
+ It could be a wormhole, which is similar to a black hole.
Black holes and wormholes aren't terribly similar. For starters black holes have been observed, wormholes are purely theoretical. Wormholes (as theorized) would provide a passage to somewhere/when. Black holes are just points in space.

The way Canfield's ability works isn't related to any real-word phenomenon.
A black hole's shape is indescribable by humans. It is a one-dimensional object with no length or width, but enormous depth. If Stephen's power made black holes, anything caught in them would be 'sphaghettified through the fabric of the universe'.

Stephen Canfield was the victim of a hate crime at some point in his past. None + In stark contrast to all the other Level Five escapees, Canfield is very timid and non-confrontational, almost to the point of being reclusive. While not by itself evidence, the psychological behavior is telling when one considers that he spent a childhood as the only African American student in a wealthy prep school full of mostly Caucasians. Were a few childhood pranks the result of Canfield's evading personality?
+ His assignment tracker profile supports this.

- Stephen Canfield led a more or less normal life until his ability manifested. Then, he accidentally killed his neighbor, was captured by the Company, and locked up without trial or hope of appeal in a cell block full of murderers and psychopaths. The things he might have seen/heard in Primatech could easily have scarred him for life.
