Awakening

"I am your friend and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not got, But there is much, very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little instant. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy."

I awoke this morning on a cold, hard slab of concrete. I was in a side alley downtown, face down on the sidewalk. My head ached and my ribs burned like fire. I had vague memories of falling, and as I rose to a sitting position I felt a flood of pain rushing to my legs. My left knee hurt the worst, the sharp, stabbing pain shooting up my thigh and down my shin. I knew it wasn't broken, and as the doctor told me after I'd hobbled into the hospital on Main street, I'd bruised my ribs and fractured my tibia in three places below the knee. An impact fracture, he said.

All day I've been trying to recall the events of late last night, what I was doing, where I had gone, who I had seen. I remember I visited Mikey at the Roadhouse just after 8 PM, before driving out to the Monroe building. Mikey told me the paper salesman had come back, and that he was looking for me. That concerned me, as the salesman and I hadn't parted on the kindest of terms. I half-expect him to lay a subpoena on me.

After I arrived at the Monroe building, everything sort of blurs in my memory. The building is only about five blocks away from where I woke up this morning, and I must of gotten there by foot. I know I wasn't drinking, and I don't drink enough to pass out anyways. My only theory is that maybe Poorley's boys jumped me when I showed up, trying to get their 'artifact' back, no doubt.

But then again... a new memory has come back to me. I saw the movement in the shadows again. In the Coolidge suite, above the Poorley's floor. Ms. Michaels left the door unlocked, so I went in. It was empty. They'd finally moved all of Mr. Coolidge's old furniture out. The power was off. The only light came in from the window. The corner of the room was black with shadow... and there, I saw it. Movement. A sort of flow within the darkness. It was almost as if the shadows were fluid, like water, and there were, for lack of a better term, "lifeforms," swimming around within it. I remember stepping toward it to take a closer look, to try and see if what I was seeing was real... to see if the shadow was in fact a sort of liquid pool of darkness. I reached my hand out to it, and I plunged it into the dark. I remember it felt so cold. Unnaturally cold.

Now, I can't recall for certain, but... it almost felt as if a cold hand had grabbed ahold of my own, and pulled. Into the shadows I went, and then that sensation of falling. Falling, falling down, way down... until I strike pavement.

And then everything fades to black.
