The Story

Primatech Facility, Hartsdale, NY, 2005

Junior Company agent Dave Rogers walked down the hallway towards Mr. Cruz's office. Meetings with the Company's second-in-command were often nerve-racking, and this meeting could be about anything from a promotion to a removal of duties. But Dave was good at what he does, and as he entered the office, he was brimming with confidence. When Gael Cruz opened his mouth and began talking, however, Dave frowned.

"'Two of them, none of us', eh?" he asked. "Not sure about this, sir. This could ruin the very integrity of our Company's partnerships."

"It's a new policy, only for the best of our agents," said Mr. Cruz, the high-ranking official to which Dave was reporting, "and you will get to work with the most skilled of our agents. Agent Davies and Agent Bishop are already partnered up."

"But sir, I work well with my current partner, Agent --"

"Agent Rogers, this is not a request. Some specials out there are too dangerous for our normal policy." Mr. Cruz removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "We have lost countless agents over the years, I feel that the new policy could be the solution to lessening our losses."

"Yes, sir."

“You will meet your new partner on Monday. You're free to go home for the weekend now, Mr. Rogers."

The next week...

"Morning. You must be Dave," said a short, brown-haired man. "My name's Curtis, Curtis Hovsepian. I'm your new partner."

"Hi, Curtis." Dave cautiously shook his partner's hand.

"Now as you both know, the targets you are after are all extremely dangerous. Your first assignment is water controller who recently manifested. We have no idea how much control he has over his ability, but we're sending you two down for a simple bag and tag; just in case he causes damage, you have your powers as backup weapons. The private jet is ready at LaGuardia, be there within the half hour."

"Private jet?" asked Dave. "Where does this guy live?"

"His name's Jack Steelson, and he's in Sydney, Australia."

"Australia?" Dave gasped. He hadn't expected such a major task as his first. "I... I'm going to have to call my girlfriend." He left Mr. Cruz's office, and dialed his girlfriend's number. "Hey honey, there's a bit of news. One of my clients had to run to Australia for a conference, and he demands that I be there too. So, I'm going to have to leave for a few days... Yes, I'll be extra careful... Sydney, the conference is in Sydney... Yes, I love you too, Amber."

Later, on the car ride to the airport, Curtis turned to Dave and chuckled. "Is that what you told your girlfriend you do for a living? A lawyer?"

"As a matter of fact, it is. What about you?"

He chuckled. "I'm single. Both my parents are dead."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Ever since the Company captured me at the age of 13, it was the only family I ever had."

Sydney, Australia. The next morning...

"Here, Dave, take some of these pills, it'll help the jet lag."

Dave grabbed the pills and eagerly swallowed some of them. Slowly, he began feeling revitalised. He checked his watch; it was 5 a.m.

On the other side of their hotel room, Curtis was flipping through the files on their target. "Jack Steelson. Student at the Sydney Community College. Skilled in physical combat and agility. His power is hydrokinesis, the power to control and create water." He scoffed. "Control and create water? That's nothing compared to our abilities. This should be a piece of cake."

"Remember this should be a piece of cake but we don't know his control over his ability," Dave reminded Curtis.

"I know, right we burst in a surprise him," said Curtis as they crept up to the door, "get ready."

They both hit the door ready to surprise the target, but he had quick reflexes and they soon realized that this wasn't going to be as easy as they thought. Jack sent torrents of water flying at them and sent them flying at the wall. Jack ran out of his dorm room and ran down the stairs leading to the exit.

"Don't panic," said Curtis. "We can still get to him, from the air. Follow my lead."

And with that, Curtis ran into Jack's room and simply jumped out of the window. He didn't fall; instead he hovered in the air as if he were flying. He nodded towards Dave, "come on."

Cautiously, Dave stepped out into the air. "How are you doing this?" he asked.

"I'm manipulating the air, letting it carry us. Don't worry, you're in safe hands. Now all we have to do is spot Mr. Steelson and you can paralyze him before he sprays us again."

"There he is," shouted Dave, "I need to be closer before I can paralyse him"

Curtis made his way closer to Steelson who sent torrents of water towards them, Curtis avoided and carried on with the pursuit.

Steelson sprinted on the streets while spraying massive torrents of water at his pursuers. He went down back alleys and into shopping malls, but Curtis and Dave followed until finally, they got close enough for Dave to paralyse him he charged down a flight of stairs into a subway station, out of Dave's visual. Dave cursed under his breath. After Curtis landed them on the ground, they entered the subway station as well, but Steelson was nowhere to be found.

Half an hour later, Curtis and Dave sat in a mall, sipping coffee. "Our taser broke after getting wet. Looks like we botched this mission up," said Curtis.

"We'll go back to his dorm this afternoon, see if we can find anything useful. Damn, that guy's slippery --" he trailed off as someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and stared into the stern face of his girlfriend, Amber Myers. "Amber? What the hell are you doing here?"
