Summary

  • James fights an unexpected villain.

Synopsis

It was Glad Yaga.

"You!" gasped James.

Glad smiled. Her face wasn't twitching at all.

"Me," she said calmly. "I wondered whether I'd be meeting you here, James."

"But I thought - Sky -"

"Debbie?" Glad laughed and it wasn't her usual quivering treble, either, but cold and sharp. "Yes, Debras does seem the type, doesn't she? So useful to have her swooping about like an overgrown bat. Next to her, who would have suspect poor, beautiful Miss Yaga?"

James couldn't take it in. This couldn't be true, it couldn't.

Glad snapped her fingers. James couldn't move.

"You're too nosy to live, James. Scurring around the school at Hallowe'en like that, for all I knew you'd seen me coming to look at what was guarding the Virus."

"You created the illusions?"

"Certainly. I have a special gift. I can take anyones ability, and leave them with... nothing. Anyway, while everyone else was running around looking for the dragon, Sky, who already suspected me, went straight to the third floor to head me off. Now, wait quitly, James. I need to examine this interesting projection."

It was the only time then that James realised that Glad had took his necklace from around his neck.

"This necklace is the key to finding the Virus," Glad murmured, tossing the necklace into a large pit. A large projection beamed out. "Trust Magpie to come up with something like this... but she's in London... I'll be far away by the time she gets back..."

All James could think of doing was to keep Glad talking and stop her concentrating on the projection.

"I saw you and Sky in the forest -" he blurted out.

"Yes," said Glad idly, walking around the projection to look at the back. "She was on to me by that time, trying to find out how far I'd got. She suspected me all along. Tried to frighten me - as though she could..."

Glad came back out from behind the projection and stared hungrily into it.

"I see the Virus... I'm realesing it... but where is it?"

James struggled against the power. He had to keep Glad from giving her whole attention to the projection.

"But Sky always seemed to hate me so much."

"Oh, she does." said Glad casually, "Heavens, yes. She was at school with your father, didn't you know? They loathed eachother. But she never wanted you dead."

"But I heard you a few days ago, sobbing -I thought Sky was threating you..."

For the first time, a spasm of fear flitted across Glad's face.

"Sometimes," she said, "I would suffer from a common split personallity disorder -"

"You mean Sky wasn't there in the room with you?" James gasped

"My split personality is with me wherever I go," said Glad quietly. "I developed it when I travelled around the world. I always thought there was good and evil. It showed me how wrong I was. There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too week to seek it."

Glad cursed under her breath.

"I don't understand... is the Virus inside the projection?"

James' mind was racing.

"What does this projecton do? How does it work? Help me!"

And to James' horror, a voice answered, and the voice seemed to come from Glad herself.

"Use the boy... Use the boy..."

Glad rounded on James

"Yes."

She clapped her hands and James fell to the floor.

James slowly got to his feet.

"Come here," Glad shouted. "Look in the projection and tell me what you see."

James walked towards him.

"I must lie," he thought desperatly. "I must look and lie about what I see."

Glad moved closer behind him. James closed his eyes, stepped infront of the projection and opaned them again.

He saw is reflection. It put its hand into its pocket and pulled out a small blue vile. It winked and put the Virus back into its pocket - and as it did so, James felt something drop into his pocket. Somehow - incredibly - he'd got the Virus.

"Well?" said Glad impatiently. "What do you see?"

James screwed up his courage.

"I see myself with my friends," he invented. "We - were sitting in the common room, having a good time."

Glad cursed again.

"Get out of my way," she said. As James he felt the Shanti Virus against his leg. Dare he make a brake for it?

But he hadn't moved before a high speaking voice spoke, though Glad wasn't moving her lips.

"He lies... He lies..."

"James, come back here!" Glad shouted. "Tell the truth! What do you see?"

The high voice spoke again.

"Let me speak to him... face to face..."

"No, you are not strong enough!"

"I have enough strengh... for this..."

Petrified, James watched as Glad threw herself onto the in pain. What was going on? Glad stood up slowly. The she turned slowly on the spot to face James.

James would have screamed, but he couldn't make a sound.

Looking at him looked like Glad, but James could tell that it wasn't.

Her face was chalk white and her hair was so much a lighter tone.

"James Connol..." she whispared.

James tried to take a step back but his legs wouldn't move."See what I've become?" she said. "The blood of animals have strenghtened me, these past weeks... you saw Glad drinking it for me in the forest... Now... why don't you give me the Virus thats in you're pocket?"

So she knew. The feeling suddently surged back into James' legs.

He stumbeled backwards.

"Don't be a fool," snarled the face. "Better save your own life and join me... or you'll meet the same end as Glad... I am now the real Glad Yaga!"

"LIAR!" James shouted suddently.

Glad started walking towards him. She was now smiling.

"How touching..." she hissed`. "I always value bravery... Yes, boy, Glad was brave... Now give me the Virus, unless you want to die in vain."

"NEVER!"

James sprang towards the flame door, but Glad screamed and, next second, James felt her hand close on his wrist. At once, a needle sharp pain seared across James head; he felt as though he was about to split in two; he yelled, struggling with all his might, and to his suprise, Glad let go of him. The pain in his head lessened - he looked around to see where Glad had gone and saw her hunched in pain, looking at her fingers - they were frozen solid.

Again Glad lunged, knocking James clean off his feet, landing on top of him, both hands around James' neck - James' head was almost blinding him with pain, yet he could see Glad howling in agony.

"My hands! My hands!"

And Glad, though pinning James to the ground with her knees, let go off his neck and stared at her own palms - James could see they looked frozen.

Glad rasied her hand to kill James, but James, by instinct, reached up and grabbed Glad's face -

"AAAARGH!"

Glad rolled off him, her face freezing too.

James jumped to his feet, caught Glad's arm and hung on as tight as he could. Glad screamed and tried to throw James off - the pain in James head was building.

He felt Glad's arm wrenched from his grasp, knew all was lost, and fell into blackness, down... down... down...

James blinked. The smiling face of Elena Magpie swam into view above him.

"Good afternoon, James," said Miss Magpie.

James stared at her. The he remembered. "Miss! The Virus! It was Glad! She's got the Virus! Miss, quick -"

"Calm yourself, James," said Magpie. "Glad does not have the Virus."

"Then who does? Miss, I -"

"James, please relax. I arrived just in time to pull Glad off you -"

"That was you."

"I feared it might be too late."

"You nearly were, I couldn't have kept her off the Virus much longer -"

"Not the Virus, boy, you - the power of Glad took you're ability away. She couldn't control it. However, we have given you a new one -"

"A new ability? Which one?"

"Only time will tell... only time will tell..."

"James!"

Jenny looked ready to fling her arms around him again, but James was happy that she held herself back as he was still very sore.

"Oh, James, we were sure you were going to - Miss Magpie was so worried -"

"The whole school's talking about it," said Michael

"Yer'?" said James. "Well, lets hope next year isn't as complicated as this!"
