Mission: Chop Shop |
|
Call Phil McKaden on your cell phone in order to start this mission.
WILLIAM: Buddy, want to hang out today?
PHIL: Sure thing. I got something exciting in mind.
WILLIAM: So, should I swing by your apartment?
PHIL: No, actually... I'm at the comic book store. Plus, there's no way I can stand to ride with you on your bike anymore, man. (laughs)
WILLIAM: Hey, shut up. So you gonna drive over to pick me up then, or what?
PHIL: Uhh... I really want to finish this 9th Wonders!. Why don't you walk over to the comic store? It's Sam's, on Buford. Just two blocks.
WILLIAM: I know the one. But we better be going someplace good.
PHIL: Trust me, you'll like it. See you in a bit.
Phil ends the phone call, and the on-screen directions instruct you to Head over to Sam's Comics on Buford. Don't take your bike, Phil will have a car. Take a walk, or a brisk jog if you so desire, and arrive at Sam's Comics two blocks to the south. Walk into the arrow in front of the store.

The door to Sam's Comics swings open, and William steps into the spacious interior. In the crowd of geeks and comic book fanatics, Phil McKaden seems terribly out of place. He is leaning against the glass counter, chatting with one of the cashiers.
PHIL: Man, it sucks that Isaac Mendez died! I'm gutted, 9th Wonders! was one of the best comics to come out last year.
ALEX: I'm with you, man. Maybe some other artist will continue it someday... but it'll never be the same.
PHIL: Yeah, really a shame.
WILLIAM: Yo, Phil. You ready to go?
PHIL: Will! About time you've showed up. Let's go. See you later, Alex.
ALEX: (waves) Bye.
William and Phil exit the comics store and walk around the back to the parking lot. They make their way to Phil's vehicle, a grey two-door sedan.
WILLIAM: So, Phil, where we going?
PHIL: We're going to do something about your proper means of transportation -- or lack thereof.
WILLIAM: You know I'm satisfied with my lowrider bike, right Phil? Plus, I'm a bit short on funds, and a car would be too --
PHIL: Relax, man. My brother's back in town, and he's running the old chop shop over in the Industrial again. He's got some pretty good deals. Why don't we drive down there and take a look? Here, I'll let you take the wheel, just to get warmed up.
Phil tosses William the keys to the sedan.
You are now at the wheel of Phil's grey sedan. Use the Up Arrow to accelerate, the Down Arrow to brake (or to reverse, when stopped). Use the Left/Right Arrows for steering. On the radar, a blip appears, representing Phil's brother's chop shop. It is quite a long way away (it is located in a separate district; the Industrial district), so use your GPS to help you get there. En route, Phil and William talk.
PHIL: Mike's a generous guy, I'm sure you'll get a bargain.
WILLIAM: Thanks, Phil. I appreciate it.
PHIL: Man, I haven't been to this part of town in ages. It's all so smelly and run-down.
WILLIAM: And to think I lived here for the first eighteen years of my life, with a father who didn't give a damn about me.
PHIL: Is he still around here?
WILLIAM: Yeah, probably rotting away in the old apartment. Hopefully we'll not run into him today.
When you arrive at the chop shop, drive into a parking space and enter the chop shop from the front. This will trigger a scene.

PHIL: Yo, Mike!
MIKE: Brother, I've missed you!
PHIL: So how was L.A.?
MIKE: Eh, I switched around a couple of jobs, but none of them really worked out. That's why I'm back to the shop. Costa Verde's still my home, figured why not live simply for a while?
PHIL: Well, it's good to have you back. How many cars been coming in since you opened for business?
MIKE: It's been good business, I've got a lot of good deals in the back. Say, who's this guy? You looking to buy something?
PHIL: That's my buddy, Will. I took him here, he really needs to keep up with the times. Still pedalling around on his little bicycle. (chuckles)
WILLIAM: Nice to meet you, Mike.
MIKE: Follow me, out back. Let's see what we can get you.
Mike leads the way out of the shop's interior, through a back door, and into the open area behind the shop. There are three parked cars, and Mike goes over each of them, introducing them to William.
MIKE: The first one's a Xoomer. Done thirty thousand, but in pretty good shape. Normally I'd hand it off for two thousand, maybe three... but I'll give it to you for 1K.
WILLIAM: (nods to Phil) Not bad, not bad at all...
MIKE: Check out these two. Both sedans, the models are "Land Ranger" and "Land Wanderer". The Ranger's a little more bashed up than the Wanderer, but still in working condition. I'd give you $850 for the Wanderer, and maybe $700 for the Ranger. Take your pick.

You have three cars sitting in front of you. Hop into any one (by pressing "F") and take it for a spin around the large open area (be careful, however, not to crash into Mike or Phil). The expensive one handles extremely well, while the cheaper one skids a little more. You have $2000 in cash to spend, so pick wisely. When you're ready, go back to Mike to talk to him.
MIKE: So, which one do you want?
The keys "1", "2", and "3" represent the three choices: $1000 for the Xoomer, $850 for the Wanderer, or $700 for the Ranger. Press any of the buttons to make your choice.
Whichever vehicle you picked is now parked on the shop's driveway. William hands over money to Mike. After the transaction, William waves to Mike and hops into the car. Phil gives his brother a hug.
PHIL: See you soon, maybe we'll grab dinner someday.
MIKE: For sure. Take care, bro. And hey, William. You look like someone who can get things done. Drop by the shop sometime, I might have some work for you. And take good care of that baby!
WILLIAM: (laughs) Will do.
On-screen directions: Drive Phil home. Drive your newly-acquired vehicle back to Lime Hill (try not to crash into stuff), and drop Phil off at his apartment.
PHIL: That was fun, wasn't it? Now you've got a nice ride to bounce around in.
WILLIAM: Thanks. I owe you one.
PHIL: Don't worry about it. Listen, I'll be in the apartment all weekend, got some papers to work on for school. But if you wanna hang, just drop by.
WILLIAM: Sure.
Some money has been deducted from your account (the amount depending on which car you bought). However, you can now store your car in the parking lot behind your apartment. Even if you ditch it somewhere in the city, the car will respawn in the parking lot. If, however, you crash your car too much, you will destroy it, and it will no longer be usable. In that case, you can go back to Mike's shop to buy a new car (the recommended course of action), or retire to using your bicycle. Your car, as long as it's not destroyed, can be repaired at the spray shop on the other side of Lime Hill, for a fee.
You now have two options for your next mission: you can drop by Phil McKaden's apartment again to go on a mission with him, or you can drive over to Industrial and work for Mike McKaden. (to be continued...)
