He was imprisoned at the bottom of the ocean, unable to escape until now. He has once again rejoined Quantum. His VERY distant grandchild is Nite Owl.
Character History
Born to very rich Muslim parents in Spain, Altaïr had it all. He was constantly spoiled as a child and became somewhat of an "insensitive bastard" as he grandfather called him. His life was almost perfect, until several Catholic knights came into his town. After his father got into an argument over religion with one of the knights the vowed that they would kill him.
And kill him they did. That night, the group of men, drunk and angry, broke into the house. They attacked his father and his mother, killing both. Altaïr attempted to fight them off, but was ultimately beaten. Seconds before he was about to be killed, his grandfather sacrificed his own life to save him. Altaïr fled his house, watching it burn to the ground. He vowed that someday, he would get his revenge. Not only on the men that killed his family, but on the world that created them. The world was naturally evil, he concluded. He would be it's punishment. He would make sure the innocent were safe, and the evil were slaughtered.
It was slightly after this event that he discovered his power. He was attempting to kill a solider that had beaten a woman who had refused to have sex with him. He was drunk and lost in the city, easy pickings for Altaïr. During this fight, the solider managed to get a good shot at him. The solider's sword plunged into his chest. The pain was unbearable and Altaïr prepared for his death. But suddenly, after the solider triumphantly pulled his sword out of Altaïr's chest, the pain went away. The wound healed over causing the solider to scream and run off.
How had he done that? Was this some god given gift for Altaïr's quest to judge mankind, or was this a curse? He realized that while he did not know the origins of this power, he knew that he could use it for the betterment of mankind, even if it had a negative aspect to it. Later that night he found the solider again, and this time he finished the job.
Years later, Altaïr had started to move up the ranks of sin punishing. Instead of soliders who raped and stole, he was killing Commanders and judges who had became corrupt. It was on one of these missions that he first encountered Quantum. He was out to kill a corrupt governor of a small Spanish town. The man was stealing from many of the citizen's, often taking their entire wages. He would also "seduce" his maids, who were often unwilling. He was a vermin, Altaïr thought, and vermin deserve to die a rat's death.
He had followed the man all day, making sure not to be seen. He would make sure he had the right man, so when the time came he wouldn't slaughter and innocent citizen. Plus, he wanted to catch him in the act, so that his quest would be truly justified. Sure enough, as soon as he got home, he forced himself upon the maid cleaning his room. She attempted to scream, but he shoved his hand in her mouth. Altaïr would have rushed in and stopped it, if he hadn't of noticed a man standing on a roof top on the other side of the governor's house. He had seen this man before, several times in the market place, and several times on the road. What if this man was the bodyguard of the governor? Was he on to him?
Altaïr's fears were shattered when the man pulled out a rifle. He aimed it towards the window where the Governor was and fired. The governor's head ripped open, blood spraying all over the maid and the bed. The maid screamed and ran out of the room. The man noticed Altaïr and sprinted out of the building. Altaïr leaped off the side of his building, both of his legs snapping. He groaned as he struggled to put them together again. After he did, he began to chase the man. He needed to know who he was.
The two men chased each other all over the small city, breaking into several buildings. Finally, Altaïr caught the man. He demanded to know who he was. The man explained that he was a member of a league of assassins. The man told Altaïr that he would love for him to join them. Altaïr told him that he was no assassin. He was judgement. He let the man go, but promised that he would eradicate them.
The next few months of his life were spent with locating this elusive group. He felt that they were just a band of paid killers, whose only goal was to make a profit. This sickened him. He killed several agents of the organization, each one giving a bit more information to the location of their base. Finally, after torturing an operative, he obtained what he was seeking. They had a base in Rome.

Evolved Human Abilities
Jack has shown that he can heal from any wound and, because of this ability, has lived for over 400 years. He had even survived being trapped at the bottom of the sea. His first manifestation of this ability was early on in his "crusades" when he was stabbed by a corrupt solider. This is a fairly large manifestation for this power.
He had shown that he can re-grow limbs very quickly.
