Character History
A Rude Awakening
January 2001
"Wake 'em up." The tall man nodded and punched the seated man in the face. The seated man grunted with pain, bringing him quickly into consciousness.
"Wwww-what...Where am I?" The man began to panic, trying to get up out the chair he was tied to. The shorter of the two standing men tried to place a hand on his shoulder, but the seated man violently shrugged it off.
"Settle down, settle down. Billy, what the hell was that?" The tall man shrugged "So...Miller. Do you remember anything?"
"Where am I?" Miller looked around. He was in a small room, possibly an office or study. There was a large grand piano in the corner and rows of book cases covering the walls.
"You're in your own house, don't you recognize it Jacko?" Miller gave him a clueless look. "You really don't remember anything, do you?" Miller gave him the look again. "Do you even know who you are?"
"No..." Miller paused, a confused look on his face.
"It worked..."
"What worked?"
"Uh...That blow to your head really must have messed with your memories. Well, take this as a second introduction. My name is Cole Grayson."
"Did...did I know you?"
"Of course, I'm your boss" Jack just stared at him.
"My boss?" Jack Miller looked around his back to his tied hands. "Why am I tied up?"
"This is the way I found you. All tied up. I saved you from that man over in there." Kole pointed to a large grey lump. After a little bit of staring, he realized it was a body. Jack was surprisingly calm with it.
"What?"
"Well, you left the job a few months ago, saying you wanted a normal life. I figured, let him go. Shortly after you left an...old friend of mine came searching for me, and found you instead. I guess that's just how it works when your in the mafia."
"I was in the mafia?"
"Well, sort of. You were my "driver". Well, why don't we get you out of that chair. You can come with us and I can explain your entire situation to you." Jack seemed nervous, but agreed. He figured that it would be better to go with these people than go it alone. Plus, he seemed to remember this person, so he must have known him before. The tall man reached behind his chair and cut the rope tied around his hands.
"This way" The man smiled. His teeth were bright silver, metal almost.
"Sure..." Jack avoided him as he got up. Cole and the Metal Mouth left the room. As Jack followed, he couldn't help looking down at the dead man. Who was he? The face seemed so familiar...
Two Years Later
January 2003
Jack was glad that Cole had taken him in. He would have lost without him. He really wasn't a driver. He was more or less Grayson's bodyguard. It was never a dull job. Plus, working for Mr. Grayson had introduced him to his daughter, Hannah. They had been dating for almost a year and half now.
Over the course of the two years living with Mr. Grayson, he had begun to wonder. What if Cole had lied to him? What if he was just using his amnesia to his own benefit?
But, for the time being, he had to push it to the back of his mind. Today he had a mission. He was transporting Grayson an associate to a meeting. He didn't know who the meeting was between.
The two men got into the car, talking quietly. "Mr. Miller."
"Mr. Grayson. Where to?"
"Wharf three. And, before we go, I want you to be on your toes. We're meeting Daniel Linderman."
"Linderman?"
"Yeah, Grayson's boss. Everybody answers to somebody." The other man chimed in "Are you sure this limo is safe?"
"As safe as it gets. The windows are double-thick bullet proof glass, the walls are lined with three inch thick metal plates. Plus, I have two silenced pistols and a MP5. I think we're safe."
"Still..."
"Don't worry Frank, we're safe. Linderman just wants us to come so we can sort out this drug import situation. We're not going to die." Grayson assured his friend.
"Now, lets get going." Jack pulled out of Grayson estates and headed down into New York City. While he tried to pay attention to Grayson while he talked to him, he was too busy watching two men on a sport bike behind him. While in New York City it often looked like they people were following you when they weren't, Jack was getting nervous. These men had followed them now for six blocks. Finally, the men left, but Jack clutched the steering wheel a little harder.
"We're here." They pulled up. There was already about three other cars there. A man came out of a back door and walked towards the car.
"Who are you with?" The man said, trying to look into the back of the car.
"Mr. Grayson, and if you don't mind, would you get your face out of my car?"
"Sure thing..." The man snarled at him. "Mr. Linderman is inside." He walked away, cursing under his breath.
"Well, lets go."
The Meeting
January 2003
They entered a large room, with nothing in it but a table and a man sitting at it. He was old, probably in his late sixties.
"Hello Cole." The man had an affluent accent. This was obviously Linderman.
"Hello Mr. Linderman." Mr. Grayson stepped forward.
"I would assume that this is Mr. Brown." Linderman referred to Frank, Grayson's friend.
"Yes. The other man is my bodyguard. You can never be too careful."
"I suppose you can't. Now, why don't we sit down. Your bodyguard may stay, but I assure you that you're not in any danger."
"Still." Linderman nodded his head and the three men sat down. Jack tried to stay alert, but found that the men's conversations meant nothing to him. They were talking about which districts dealers would sell in, and to which boss the profits would go. Jack couldn't care less.
He sat down near the door and started staring at the ceiling. He began to look at the little details, trying to entertain himself. Every once in awhile he would look over to make sure that everyone was okay, and then go back to looking at the ceiling.
The meeting had gone on now for the better part of an hour and it still hadn't gotten near ending. Jack noticed something. Their was a large shadow behind one of the windows. At first Jack just thought it was a box or something, but when it started moving, he got nervous. Who was out there? Was it a guard? Was it an cop? Was it a-
He was cut off by a gun shot that ripped through Mr. Brown's head.
"Get down!" Mr. Linderman and Mr. Grayson hit the floor. Jack flew to his feet, immediately grabbing his guns. He and Linderman's guards shot at the window from which the gunshot came from. The shadow ran just out of reach from the bullets, finally leaping through the window. The shadow was a man covered head to toe in black clothes. He carried a MP5 and had several grenades attached to his belt. He raised the gun and fired off rounds into two of the three guards, the first one getting shot in the head, the other getting shot in the chest. The last one, enraged by his friends deaths, charged the man, only to get shot in the head, his brains splattering all of the ground.
"MR. GRAYSON, MR. LINDERMAN, we need to go!" Jack fired off the guns at the man, making the man jump for cover. Jack grabbed Grayson by the arm and helped him up. Linderman had already gotten to the door.
"Get to the car!"
Shootout
January 2003
The trio rushed outside, only to be greeted by two more men fully clothed in black.
"This is the end of the road Mr. Linderman. It ends here." The man from inside the building came up behind them. "You're tyranny against the good people of this world is done."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Really? You have no idea about all the innocent people your company and your friends have killed? Maybe you can explain these?" The man held up a few pictures. They displayed gruesome images of dead bodies.
"These people were former associates of yours. They all turned up brutally murdered."
"It wasn't me! I swear it!"
"Really? Then maybe you can explain why your thugs were seen leaving the scenes of all of these murders? I knew those men. They were good people." Linderman starting panicking. Jack was panicking too. He could feel his adrenaline rushing. He needed to lash out at these men, but all three held MP5's, and all he had were two almost empty pistols. These were not the best conditions. But then again, he had worked under conditions like this before.
"So Mr. Linderman...do you and your 'friends' have any last words?" They all stood dumbfounded. "Okay then." The man raised his rifle and shot Grayson in the chest. Jack screamed with rage. Suddenly, something in his mind changed. It was like the world was slowing down and his thought process speed up. He roared and lunged at the lead man. Before he knew what he was doing, he had punched through the man's chest.
He flew around. The other two men already had their rifles up, but to Jack, it seemed as if they were moving at a snails pace. He raced out to them, picking up the closest and hurling him into the wall, a sickening crunch echoing around the wharf as his bloody, limp body hit the ground. The other man tried to fire his gun, but Jack avoided the shots. He grabbed the man by the neck and whipped him into the ground.
"Please! Please!" The man struggled to breath.
"Why? Why should I? You killed one of my best friends?" Jack continued to choke him.
"Did...you...see...what you just did? Normal people can't do that...I can help you..."
"How the hell are you going to help me?" Jack was still seething with rage.
"I...kkkknow...who you ar...e"
"So?"
"Gr...ayso...n...liiiied...to you." Jack stared at him. "He...did something to your memory...he erased it...you used to hate...him."
"You're lying!"
"Ask...Linderman...to fix it...he can...heal things." Jack gave the man a confused look. "Ppp-lease-" The man's head exploded as a bullet pierced the side of it. Blood sprayed up into Jack's face. He whirled around. Linderman stood over him with one the men's MP5 in his hand.
"What the hell was that?"
"He was crazy. He was trying to turn you against me."
"What did he mean by you could heal things? How the hell did I do what I just did?"
"I don't know...he was lying about me. You, well...adrenaline does do wonders to the human body." Jack stood there, pondering what had transpired. He looked over at Grayson's dead body. "Well...let's clean up this mess. I can take you back to Grayson estates. I would be honored if you decided to work for me."
"I'll get back to you on that one."
What have I become?
May 2003
It had been a tough few months. He had had to explain to the entire Grayson family that Grayson had died. Linderman had covered the funeral costs, giving them a little relief, but not much. Surprisingly, Hannah had taken her father's death well. They were never that close. No one knew what to do now. Grayson had no sons to take over the mob, and none of his associates wanted the position. Seeing as he was engaged to Hannah, he was the closest thing to a son Grayson had. Linderman had appointed him. As much as he wanted it, he knew he couldn't handle it, but he did his best.
"Hey honey, you wanted to talk?" Hannah walked into the room. Jack looked up from his desk.
"Yeah..."
"Well, what is it?"
"Have...have you ever done something that no human could ever do?"
"What?"
"Well...like some extraordinary?"
"I was a pretty good gymnast as a little girl."
"No...like...well...superhero stuff."
"No, I don't think I have. Why do you ask?"
"When Grayson died...I...I did something. It was like everything was really slow, and I was really fast. I actually punched through a mans stomach."
"I know it's really difficult for all of us to get through his death. Maybe you've just thought that you did that."
"Maybe...but maybe not. It felt so good too..."
"Why don't we call it a night?"
"Okay." He and Hannah headed off to bed, and while he tried to sound happy and upbeat, his mind was dragged time and time again into the moment. He knew it wasn't adrenaline and he didn't imagine it. He kept going over what the man had said. "Gr...ayso...n...liiiied...to you" What had he meant?
Jack shrugged it off. It wasn't worth it.
The Boss
September, 2003
"Make sure Jimmy gets you the money. If he doesn't, give him a little 'surprise'." Metal Mouth nodded and left Jack's office. It had been a few months now and Jack was just starting to get the hang of being "The Boss". It was more complicated than he previously thought. He had to make sure he got money from the dealers, he had to protect people, he had to give a cut to Linderman, and most importantly, he had to make sure his footsteps were always erased. This was a perfect job. He had tried his hardest to push the memories of his superhuman feat into the back of his mind. He didn't need to think about it.
Jack got up and walked out of the room. He had everything he wanted at the moment. He had the girl, the job, the money, the car. He was living the dream.
"Who's dream are you living though?" Jack whirled around. A man in a black jumpsuit stood behind him. He whipped out a gun.
"Who are you?"
"Don't worry. I'm a friend. I know who you are Jack."
"I've heard that before."
"This isn't you. You were never a 'mobster'."
"How do you know? I don't remember you? How did you get in here?"
"Do you remember this?" The man held up a pendant. Memories suddenly came flooding back into his mind "You do...don't you?"
"No. Get out of my house or I'm going to kill you."
"You don't want to do that. I'm trying to show you the truth."
"If my life is a lie, then I'm comfortable with it."
"But you can do so much more. I know about your power." Jack looked dumbfounded.
"What power?"
"You used to be a killer, Jack, a hired assassin. You worked for the single greatest league of assassins in history. Look at yourself now. You're a bitch. You're Linderman's bitch. You knew you were something more when you killed those men. You knew you were something more special." Jack knew he was right, but didn't want to admit it. "Jack...they manipulated your mind. You were supposed to kill Grayson for us. But then they got to you and erased your mind."
"This is bullshit! I'm not listening to this anymore." Jack aimed the gun at him.
"Before you shoot that gun, tell me...does Quantum mean anything to you." Jack stopped. Where had he heard that name?
"Maybe."
"That was our leagues name, Quantum. You were going to take out Grayson and Linderman. I have the file right here." He lifted up a manilla folder.
"How do I know that you didn't fake it?"
"We have a recorded message of you in case of this exact situation. Take it." Jack hesitantly grabbed it."Please...trust me. We used to be great friends. You used to be one of the best assassin's in the world." Jack looked it over.
"Who are you?"
"My codename is Nite Owl."
"If my memory is really gone, how am I supposed to get it back?"
"Linderman. He can heal things. It's his "gift"...just like your little "gift". He can heal your memory. Now...I need to go. Linderman will be in town tomorrow. In his office. I would suggest you go talk to him. I'll be there too." The man quickly jumped out the window.
"I...I guess I'm talking to Linderman tomorrow.
Questions
"Mr. Linderman, Jack Miller is here to see you."
"Send him in." Jack walked into the building. "It's great to see you Jack! I don't think there's anything big going on in the mob, so why are you here?"
"It's a personal issue."
"What is it?"
"I..." Jack pondered if he should do this or not. The gun in his pocket was enough to make Linderman panic, but not his guards. They were armed to the teeth. He had to do it. He needed to know for sure. He whipped out the gun. "Linderman, I want you to tell me the truth!" Linderman's hands flew up.
"Please Jack...can't we talk about this?"
"It's not a time for talking." Nite Owl appeared in the corner. He wore a strange outfit, looking like a cross between a bird and Batman. "It's a time for healing." Linderman stared at him in disbelief.
"How did you get in here?"
"Oh, I've picked up a few more powers since we last met Daniel. I want you to heal Jack of his mental damage. He needs to know the truth."
"And what if I don't? What are you going to do? You can't fight off thousands of guards and police men by yourself? Jack doesn't even know how to use his power!" Nite Owl teleported next to Linderman, grabbed him by his throat and hurled him into the wall. "We got Grayson. We'll let you live if you do this. We were coming for you." Linderman agreed. He walked over to Jack and placed his hands on Jack's skull.
"There's so much...damage..." Linderman struggled. Flashes of forgotten memories flashed threw Jack's head. A memory of Grayson standing above him with his hands freezing a man standing next to him. Memories of Linderman shooting his friends, memories of working with Nite Owl. He began to see that this whole mob thing was a lie. He was beginning to see the light...Quantum...the League of Assassin's he had worked for...everything. Finally, Linderman finished.
"Okay...Okay...I did what you asked for. Please! Let me go!" Jack looked over at Nite Owl.
"Do you remember Jack?"
"Yes." He pointed the gun at Linderman's head, the man sobbing silently. "I would kill you, but I would be no better than you are. I wouldn't take the life of an unarmed man. I'm better than you." He spat in his face and walked over to Nite Owl. "Let's get out of here." The two teleported away, leaving Linderman in his office, alone and sobbing.
Three Years Gone
May 2006
It was three years later and Jack was finally putting his life back together. He had taken Hannah and his good friend Metal Mouth (even though Metal Mouth had erased his memory) away from Grayson estates to live with him. They had all moved to a small island in the Pacific, the headquarters of Quantum, the league of assassins he had worked for. Everything was just as it should be. But when it came to Jack Miller, nothing stayed good for long.
