Votepetrelli.com Texts
Is there any advantage to signing up for texts and emails for votepetrelli? I was wondering because the most recent (May 1) email from Primatech is asking the reader to sign up for texts. (Andrewzors 13:48, 1 May 2007 (EDT))
- I'm not sure, actually. I'm not signed up for either one. :) (Admin 02:26, 2 May 2007 (EDT))
Admin
- Hey, Bob. You interested in being an administrator here? (Admin 14:09, 3 May 2007 (EDT))
- Sure, I can do that. Once finals are done on the 11th, I'll have the summer pretty much available. Thanks.--Bob 14:15, 3 May 2007 (EDT)
- With my newly discovered powers, I'm seeing red exclamation points in the recent changes list. I should probably know what they mean, but I don't. --Ted C 15:28, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
- The exclamation points indicate changes that have not yet been "patrolled". Patrolling is a step admins take to essentially "validate" all changes and confirm that they're proper edits. When you view a diff that's not been patrolled yet it will let you mark it as patrolled. If the change looks good go ahead and mark it patrolled. This lets admins check out recent changes and filter out patrolled edits (by clicking "Hide patrolled edits") so they can check the unpatrolled ones and make sure they look good. It's essentially just a way of knowing what changes have been seen by an admin already and which haven't. Since there are times when there are tons of edits somtimes we'll just check out the unpatrolled list and make sure they look good. This way we can check all the changes that other admins haven't already marked as legitimate. (Admin 15:32, 4 May 2007 (EDT))
- I recall seeing a "patrolled" link once, but I'm not sure how I managed it, and I'm not seeing a way to mark edits patrolled. --Ted C 15:53, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
- In Special:Recentchanges by each individual edit is a "diff" link. Find an unpatrolled one (with an exclamation point), click it and at the top right of the diff under the summary you'll see a link "Mark as patrolled". (Admin 15:58, 4 May 2007 (EDT))
- Also, when you click on a new page (N), the patrol button is at the very bottom right. This goes for redirects, too. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:30, 4 May 2007 (EDT)

Persuasion power for Sylar
Hi! Thank you for your fast reply to my previous participation. I did never read anything official about it, but in "0.7%", during his confrontation with Isaac Mendez, it should be quite clear (in my opinion) Sylar tries to use Persuasion power in obligating Isaac to show him the future "He won't be". Are you really sure it is just a question of underlining "drama" ?
- The writers have confirmed that it simply for dramatic effect. Heroe!(talk) (contribs) Random Page! 10:37, 4 May 2007 (EDT)
- There's a discussion about this on the Sylar talk page here actually. The writers did explicitly say that he did not take her power. In fact, if you go back and compare the effect used with Eden's power to Sylar's voice you can tell that it's a different effect. (Admin 10:54, 4 May 2007 (EDT))
- Thank you so much for your kind and very satisfactory answer. Best regards. NK
Redirect
5YG and THP were just a way to reach the episode page faster than write "The Hard Part" in the search field. I wasn't about to use those redirects in any article. It was just to make editors navigation faster. An easy way to find the episode page! -- FrenchFlo (talk) 09:14, 9 May 2007 (EDT)
- I was afraid of seeing us ending up with somewhat cryptic redirects for every episode and I don't think that'll be a good idea. Good for a forum perhaps (though I'm sure many newcomers there find the abbreviations very confusing) where everyone abbreviates everything, but not so good here. By not redirecting it will hopefully discourage people from even trying to link to the abbreviations and instead just use the full episode name which will keep things clear. (Admin 09:37, 9 May 2007 (EDT))
Parody category
Lostpedia has a parody section with lists of Lost parodies and I think we should have one too. So far, I have seen 4 Heroes parodies (Zeroes, Zeroes 2, Family Guy parody and the MADtv parody). What do you think? -User:Citizen

New server
- After seeing how quickly we're growing it looks like it's time for me to purchase a new beefier server just for Heroes Wiki. Will probably take a few weeks, but since we're on break until season two begins there should be time. Existing server is running an older OS and some sites that depend on older software, so upgrading would be non-trivial. Been running multiple versions of some of this software (PHP, MySQL, etc.) but getting them to co-exist is a little tricky and complicates the process of making certain changes that would help the site. I'll probably have to alter the percentage of revenue we donate for a while to offset the added cost, but it'll position us to be able to grow quite a bit more... and we'll need that in the upcoming seasons as we continue to grow in popularity. For those interested the new server will most likely have 2 Quad core Xeon 1.6ghz processors (2x4MB cache) and 8 GB memory. Also looking forward to being able to use APC which I expect to improve performance throughout the site. I've tested it on another newer server and APC is rather trivial to install on a system with a single version of PHP, but a little trickier to install with the current setup. (Admin 15:44, 22 May 2007 (EDT))
- Server has been purchased. I'll set it up in a couple of weeks and then we should be set for quite some time. (Admin 13:18, 2 June 2007 (EDT))
- It sounds good. Well, I never had the pleasure to thank you, so, thanks Admin for everything you have done for this site, in particular, making it exist!! Depending on how many seasons Heroes will have, one thing is sure, the more season, the more traffic. So having new servers would be great, at least, I assume :) Well, thanks again! -- FrenchFlo (talk) 15:53, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
thanks :)
Hey, I really appreciate your kind comments on my wiki, 24 Database.
I really love Heroes Wiki, and find this site to be a great source of inspiration. I honestly feel it is one of the best wiki sites on the net, which is why I set it as a "golden standard" for my editors to model after.
Although, it is too bad that 24 and Heroes usually air at the same time. They are both great shows, thank goodness for DVR's and DVD's though.

Domain
Hello Admin. A friend and I want to start a website with web comics and forums and flash animation and we were wondering if you could host it for free like you offered with wikis in your user page. Let me know soon. Thank you -Citizen

Job Queue
I was looking at Special:Statistics and noticed "job queue". I clicked on the link but it didin't really tell me anyting. What is it for? --Heroe!(talk) (contribs) 13:57, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
- There are certain internal management tasks that can take a while to run. Tasks like updating internal link tables so that the software knows exactly what pages link to other pages or tasks like purging the caches when a commonly used template is updated. The software breaks these long tasks into separate jobs and every so often when someone visits the site it pulls one of these jobs out of the queue and executes it. The job queue length is just a very rough estimate of how many jobs are in the queue. (Admin 14:02, 2 June 2007 (EDT))
2 Questions
Two questions for you: First, I'm having a hard time getting any links to show up on MediaWiki:Unusedimagestext (see discussion). Second, any idea why there are no TOCs on the site? I thought there might be a problem with MediaWiki:Common.css, but I couldn't figure it out. Any ideas? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:15, 4 June 2007 (EDT)
Strange Behaviour of functions
- Hey there. i was trying to copy some templates from this wiki to the german one and noticed some strang behaviour. The function
{{#if: {{#pos:{{PAGENAME}}|test abc}}|1|2}}
comes to two different results depending on wether i try it here in this wiki or in the german wiki. any idea where that may come from? it's pretty annoying and could be the reason for some problems i had some time ago with other templates. i tried them both in the Sandbox of the engl. wiki and the german one. i hope you can help me out on that. Waldmeister 06:03, 9 June 2007 (EDT)
- I don't understand exactly why, but for some reason the
#pos:
function is not working on the German site. I can't figure out why it's not working, but at least that's the reason it's returning different results. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:00, 9 June 2007 (EDT)- Try it out now. The German wiki was one of the first localized wikis setup so it didn't have many of the extensions that have been added to the English site over time. Specifically the StringFunctions extension which is required to use #pos. I've updated the extensions on the German wiki. (Admin 10:41, 9 June 2007 (EDT))
- Yeah, it seems to be working now. Thanks, Admin. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:01, 9 June 2007 (EDT)
- Thx alot. Guess i can go back to work now ;) Waldmeister 12:09, 9 June 2007 (EDT)

Site down
I couldn't get onto the site last night, around 3 am EST. Any idea why? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:02, 11 June 2007 (EDT)
- It looks like the server may have lost power for some reason. It's uptime is only about 3 hours at the moment. You should have texted me, I might have been able to get it back up sooner. :) (Admin 08:10, 11 June 2007 (EDT))
- Come on now, I'm not going to text you at 3 am. Besides, it was time for me to go to bed anyway. :) I actually noticed it doing the same thing off and on a few times during the evening. 3 hours sounds about right, but it would always come back, oh, 5 or 10 minutes later. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2007 (EDT)

- It wouldn't load. It didn't give a message. Then it timed out. About 5 or 10 minutes later it was fine. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:14, 11 June 2007 (EDT)
- Happened again: 9:01 to 9:09. Timed out. No message. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:10, 11 June 2007 (EDT)
- Send me a text next time it happens so I can check it out while the problem exists. I do see a period of inactivity in the logs at the time you specified. (Admin 21:18, 11 June 2007 (EDT))
- I'll second that the site was down about 3AM (I was working on the WCF guards group article but couldn't post it--no response). I don't know when it came up again cause I went to my own bed. Is there an e-mail users should send to if it happens again?--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:33, 11 June 2007 (EDT)
- Would you like me to email you, Admin? That's the only address I have for you. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:38, 11 June 2007 (EDT)
- You can email me at admin@heroeswiki.com, but depending on the problem the email may not go through. The other admins have my personal contact info and can text me if something is down since a text is the best way to alert me. (Admin 21:45, 11 June 2007 (EDT))
- Also once I've moved the site to the new server (possibly this weekend) I'll setup monitoring to let me know automatically when the site is having problems so hopefully it won't be an issue next time. (Admin 21:53, 11 June 2007 (EDT))

GD Library
- I have just uploaded a .jpg image and tried to include that in a template and instead of the resized smaller image it just shows this message: Incomplete GD library configuration: missing function imagecreatefromjpeg. Can you fix that? And there is another problem with images: There is a .PNG image that just won't show anymore. It's been included in the template for quite some time and there was no major change in the template for quite some time. The same image seems to work fine for the engl. wiki. For that you don't have to read through german templates i have copied both problematic parts of the templates to the german wikis sandbox. Hopefully you can help me on that. Working...
The site's working for me on Firefox now. Thanks. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:25, 13 June 2007 (EDT)
- I wasn't able to get on for the last 10 minutes or so (about 10:55 to 11:05 EST). I tried Firefox and IE, but neither worked. I pinged the site but it timed out. I didn't want to call because it's kind of late. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:06, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
- The new server is hosted somewhere that I know from experience is a lot more reliable than the place it was before (not that it wasn't decently reliable before). If you couldn't even ping it this time it sounds like an issue with your connection. You're not on wireless, are you? I'll check the logs later on and see if there's any gap during the interval you specified just to be sure. Also I'm almost never asleep before 2am EST so if you have a cell phone feel free to text me. (Admin 23:18, 14 June 2007 (EDT))
- Yep, logs show plenty of traffic during that time period. If you can get to other sites but not this one then instead of using "ping heroeswiki.com" try "tracert heroeswiki.com" and let me know the results and it may be easier for me to tell you where the problem is. (Admin 23:42, 14 June 2007 (EDT))
- Thanks, night owl. My connection is probably not as reliable as the server, so I'd be willing to bet that's where the problem was, 'specially if there was traffic at that time. I'll try tracert next time. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:57, 14 June 2007 (EDT)
Spanish
I'm not sure if you watch HW:Languages or not, or if you're still patrolling edits or not, but Seldon wants to help out with Spanish translations. That's your thing more than mine. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:07, 17 June 2007 (EDT)
Yes, and a have a question: whats is the firs step?, I want to begin with translations of the characters page (Hiro, for example), How can do that? copy the page in english to the site in spanish and translate there?.
I'm not good enought with the wikicode but I'm a fast learning.
Thanks again Seldon
- I may be able to help some, but I don't know where to find the spanish site. Also, I'll be gone on a trip for about a week starting this Tues. night.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:51, 18 June 2007 (EDT)

Hi there, my name is Nim Joe and I am bilingual in both English and Cantonese [although bit rusty with Chinese]. I would like to maybe try translating into chinese for you as I really love Heroes... only problem is time really as I am currently at university so it may take a while. Can you fill me in with more details?
Cheers

On the edit screen for any page, the "bold text" and "italic text" buttons do not show pictures, but text. They still work as normal, but it's kind of disconcerting. Any ideas why this is happening? I'm only noticing it today. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:20, 25 June 2007 (EDT)
- Try clearing your cache and trying again. They look fine to me. Your browser might have had a problem the last time it tried to refresh the images. (Admin 20:22, 25 June 2007 (EDT))
- Yeah, that did it ... after I cleared it about 6 times. (Ugh.) Thanks. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:25, 25 June 2007 (EDT)
