Micah

Hey. Micah has a Season Three History page but since most people have agreed not to include one (at least until the end of Rebellion), should it be deleted? Josh KorolenkoUTChronicles

  • Na. I think it's okay to start doing the Season Three history pages.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:31, 2 August 2009 (EDT)

Archive help

Miami, could you help me creating a talk page archive? I know how to make the sub page and all, but I have only a vague idea on how to put an "archive notice", so to speak, in my talk page, similar to yours or Ryan's. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 12:12, 2 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Basically, you just add a user talk subpage such as "User talk:Intuitive Empath/Top", edit that to list the links as you want, and then in your talk page you call the subpage as a template at the top of the page. You can take a look at "User talk:MiamiVolts/Top" for an example. Template:ArchivePrelinks may help you some if you have a lot of topics to process and want to link each of them like on my page. If you still need help, please let me know.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:40, 2 August 2009 (EDT)
    • Well, a bit of copy and paste from your template and a lot of copy and paste from my talk page, I think I did it. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 21:06, 3 August 2009 (EDT)
      • Yeah, it looks great. Congrats!--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:49, 4 August 2009 (EDT)

Just a thought

Hey, I noticed you removed Tracy.jpg's AFD tag and added it to Heroes Wiki:Used files since it was linked to, but not used, on a talk page. I was wondering that, in order to make identifying these types of files easier, would it be possible to include a Special:Whatlinkshere, so that there'd be a list of what pages link to the file, alongside the list of what pages use the file? Hope you understand what I'm getting at. --Radicell 00:43, 3 August 2009 (EDT)

  • I think you mean to add a call to "Special:Whatlinkshere" under the "Links" header. That's possibly in the new MediaWiki version Admin is working on, but I'm not sure. It might be doable to add a footer to image pages with those pages linking to the image by using existing MediaWiki options in this version. Is that what you're getting at?--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:09, 3 August 2009 (EDT)
    • Yes, exactly. I just thought that it'd be a good addition to help prevent people from mistakenly adding the AFD tag to such images (like I had done with the Tracy image). So d'you think that it'd be possible to do (I suppose the MediaWiki stuff that controls how the website looks will need to be played around with)? --Radicell 01:43, 3 August 2009 (EDT)
      • I checked around and was able to get it working by editing MediaWiki:Linkstoimage on the new server, but unfortunately the links appear in pre-tagged form in the current server version so I commented that code out here for now. Feel free to take a look at the source code.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:49, 3 August 2009 (EDT)
        • So I assume that once the new server is finished and goes online, the code will work? Thanks then. Also, you know how right now, in the image upload form, if one uploads an image with the same title as an existing image, it will display a page asking the user to confirm whether or not to upload over the existing image? Could it be possible to implement a feature that would detect whether or not a category has been assigned to the image being uploaded? And if it detects no categories, it would display a page that asks the user to either add categories or go ahead and upload anyway? Could that somehow be achieved? --Radicell 06:52, 4 August 2009 (EDT)
          • Yes, the code should work when Admin updates the server and someone (likely me) uncomments it. :) As for the image upload form, that might be possible, but wouldn't such a message be better placed on the image 'successfully uploaded' page? What do you think?--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:43, 4 August 2009 (EDT)
            • Hmm, it seems to me that most of the uncategorized images we have right now are from people not bothering to write anything in the upload form, and just clicking "Upload". Even though I agree that having the message be on the 'successfully uploaded' page is more user-friendly, I think that adding a warning page is more effective. --Radicell 22:35, 4 August 2009 (EDT)
              • I'm not sure it makes sense to add it just for re-uploads, but maybe you could ask what people think on the community portal talk page. I'm not against doing so, just not sure of the support for such a change. I don't think there's currently any way to search the upload form itself for a category using in-database code. The part of the upload form where you would write the categories doesn't get checked until after the image begins being uploaded, so this check would just work for re-uploads if we do it on the upload form itself. I guess it would be possible to write a server extension that would do the ideal case for Admin to consider, but that's a much tougher challenge for me and will likely take a while.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:15, 5 August 2009 (EDT)
                • Alright, I'll post on the Community Portal some time to ask people of their opinion. I think it should work like a "post preview" button; only instead the code previews the upload to see if there are categories; if there are, it uploads it, if not, it directs the user to the warning page. The idea is to apply this to all uploads (since that's where most of the uncategorized images are coming from) instead of just re-uploads. But I will first post on the Community Portal talk page to gather opinions. Thanks for your help. --Radicell 03:01, 5 August 2009 (EDT)

possible vandal

Hey miami, User:Troy93, has been making bad edits. eg) Troy has empathic mimicry on the ability page. Anyway, just thought i would bring that to your attention. I also undid his edits to make them right again.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 16:28, 5 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Thanks, Catalyst. I gave him a warning as he might not understand. But if he continues, please let me or another administrator know so he can be blocked.--MiamiVolts (talk)
    • Hey MiamiVolts, I'm sorry to say that there might be another one. User:Syral11 is changing a lot of things e.g.) Barbara has alchemy.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 10:33, 14 August 2009 (EDT)
      • I have too noticed that Syral11 has been changing things. They changed both the Tabula Rasa page and the Appearancs by Episode page by adding the appearances. But, we don't know the appearances yet. --Iheartheroes 10:40, 14 August 2009 (EDT)
        • He is not stopping. I think you have to say something again.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 10:41, 14 August 2009 (EDT)
          • Ok, he is blocked temporarily. If he comes back and continues adding spoiler info. to the mainspace, other vandalism, please let me know. Thanks again for the heads-up!--MiamiVolts (talk) 11:02, 14 August 2009 (EDT)

Main Character Page

No it's ok! I just thought it might be handy maybe... But I guess since there are portals, then we don't need it. But thanks for the consideration! :) --Iheartheroes 11:33, 7 August 2009 (EDT)

Alejandro Quotes

Hey Miami, User:Arkzod has been placing memorable quotes in Alejandro's page. I'm not sure if they are memorable because they are all in Spanish. I undid the edits last night, but he put them back up again. Jut thought i should tell you.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 16:49, 10 August 2009 (EDT)

  • They look okay to me, but they probably should be accompanied with English translations. Perhaps Arkzod can add them? If he doesn't respond, let me know and I'll add translations myself.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:15, 10 August 2009 (EDT)

Links

Question: You know those little boxes at the end of a page? Like for example, on the page "Peter Petrelli" at the bottom there's the box with characters of Season 1 and other stuff. How do I make one of those boxes at the bottom of one of my pages? Thanks. :) Kyle Stevens 20:22, 16 August 2009 (EDT)

  • You're welcome. You can use {{blurb}}text to go inside{{blurbclose}} and it will appear like
    this
. If you want the box to appear at the bottom of multiple pages, you can create a user template. For that, create a separate page called "User:Kyle Stevens/footer" and edit it to include the blurb you want to see at the bottom of your pages, then put {{User:Kyle Stevens/footer}} at the bottom of the pages you want the text to appear.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:00, 16 August 2009 (EDT)
    • All right....Thanks for your help...again! Hope I'm not being a bother with the questions and all. :)--Kyle Stevens 23:49, 16 August 2009 (EDT)
      • It's okay. We are all new to wikis once, so if you can't figure something out it's normally okay to ask. :) But if you are looking to learn some things on your own, many things are documented in the wiki's help system, which is linked beginning from Help:Contents.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:06, 17 August 2009 (EDT)
        • I know....if my pictures get deleted for not being credited, what do I have to do to stop that from happening?--Kyle Stevens 00:35, 17 August 2009 (EDT)
          • I think Ryan already answered this for you, but you need to edit the page of the image and note the source url where you found the image and add the correct category like Ryan advised you. If it's an image you designed yourself, you can just note that it was designed by you instead of putting a source url. Also, regarding images you upload, be sure that it doesn't violate copyright for it to be used here. i.e. screenshots from Heroes are okay as fair use, but many website images are protected by copyright so be careful.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:10, 17 August 2009 (EDT)

Old Checklists

For gaphic novels, webisodes, and episodes, should the checklist be taken off the discussion page, or on an archive page, or stay once completed? I've made a list of which are done and which aren't (Also, which only have one left and some I did two left) but I put it here. And I didn't know if you wanted them taken off or left on or what? Also, if you notice, there are a majority of all three sections that the checklists need completed...does no one ever work on them? lol! --Iheartheroes 23:33, 18 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Thanks for your work on those checklists, IHH. They should stay on the discussion pages. Some of the pages are really big, but I don't think any of them need to be archived, since the discussions don't really continue too much a week or two after the episode airs. If it's completed, just show that it's completed and leave it there. One of the reasons that there are so many blanks left there is not because people don't work on them (although certainly not as many people work on the checklists as I would hope), but because we typically don't mark something as completed if we leave it as a stub. In other words, if the checklist says to put a summary for .07% on the Midland, TX article, and we only put a stub there, then the checkmark doesn't really belong because the summary isn't complete. However, there's no way I'm going to ask you to go back and undo all the work you've done--especially when a stub is just as good (or better) than a missing checkmark. Ideally, we would have a stub and a missing checkmark, but it's fine as it is. And like I've said before, thanks so much for going through and cleaning up all those checklists. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:12, 19 August 2009 (EDT)
    • Thanks, Ryan. Also, I would add that many people only like to take care of parts of the checklist, so in many cases the checklist doesn't get completely done until much later, if ever.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:20, 19 August 2009 (EDT)

Contest. Join?

Hey! I have my own contest and wanted to know if you wanted to enter. Well, you would have to read the episode summaries first.......But no worries, enter here! :) :) :) --Kyle Stevens 23:40, 18 August 2009 (EDT)

Help

Hey Miami, I'm looking for some help on how to go about writing the "all options" pages for each iStory chapter (pages like this one). Since you're usually the ones to write these pages, I figured this was the best place to ask. None of these pages have been written for The Civilian chapters yet; I'd like to create these pages but would like some pointers on the coding, format, etc. Thanks, it's much appreciated. --Radicell 07:09, 26 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Sure, I welcome the help! All you have to do is enclose each choice in a collapsible table, and subdivide it in the way you think makes the most sense. Span tags can also be added to enable easy jumps. Most of the time, there's an introduction which we summarize, and from there there's a few options. In that case each option gets it's own side-by-side table, and the options within each option get their own table. When there's too many suboptions, I've been listing the main options consecutively instead of side-by-side. You should be able to view the code on the other all-options pages for examples. But for a quick pointer, I just put something in the sandbox for you to try out...pay attention to option 5. If you have trouble, let me know. I haven't had time to get to those summaries as of late, but I'll be happy to provide pointers.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:04, 26 August 2009 (EDT)
    • Thanks for your help. I've just finished the page for Chapter 1 of The Civilian. It was pretty hard work! I don't know if it can be made more aesthetically pleasing... everything's kind of cramped right now. --Radicell 08:52, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
      • True. It's not quick to do, which is why I didn't want to keep doing them all myself. Regarding aesthetics, you can take the first set of options (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d...) and tile them vertically, instead of horizontally, for added room. I'll try to help you out with that in a few minutes.--MiamiVolts (talk) 11:14, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
        • I think it looks great. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:32, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
          • It did look good, but it's tiled vertically now and I think that's better. But if you prefer it tiled horizontally, feel free to change it back.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:55, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
          • I also added more collapsing now, so the option results don't display unless you open them.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:13, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
            • Thanks, Miami. Now, to tackle Chapters 2-5! :) --Radicell 06:19, 28 August 2009 (EDT)

No Table of Contents

Is there a template or method to have a page to where there is no table of contents? If you see here, you might be able to tell that the table of contents will be looong. Is there a way to take it off? Thanks! --Iheartheroes 20:22, 26 August 2009 (EDT)

  • __NOTOC__thats all it is.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 20:34, 26 August 2009 (EDT)
    • Right. You can put "__NOTOC__" on a line by itself at the top of the page. You could add a custom TOC, perhaps "{{Tocright}}", such that the table appears on the right side of the page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:44, 26 August 2009 (EDT)
      • Ok, thanks! I might do the tocright thing but I still don't know if i want that or not...but thanks again! --Iheartheroes 17:13, 27 August 2009 (EDT)

Images

Hey Miami, as an admin you could help me with this. Could you please check out these images and see if you prefer them to the images that Daphne and Molly already have. Personally, I think these ones are better. :) AJUTChronicles

  • I'm not sure if they are that much better, but it's not just my decision. I recommend you ask on their respective talk pages. If the consensus is to change the images, you should then re-upload them over the existing profile images and afd these duplicates so an administrator like myself can delete them.--MiamiVolts (talk) 05:26, 29 August 2009 (EDT)

A.T. Map names

Do the names of abilities from the map count? There is this person named Seph Masters on it that that has aerokinesis, aquakinesis, geokinesis, and cryokinesis. Also, Daphne's ability says "enhanced speed". Just saw it and I thougt I'd bring it up. --Boom D  14  17:15, 30 August 2009 (EDT)

  • Some of the map content is fan-created, so it depends who added it. There's an option to only view the map with NBC-provided content, but the default includes the many fan-created entries.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:24, 30 August 2009 (EDT)
