Usutu gives Matt and Hiro a paste before they go into precognitive trances. The ingredients, according to Usutu, are roots of a native tree (tambotie tree) and hyena dung.
About
One of Us, One of Them
In Usutu's hut, Usutu gives Matt some of his food. Matt claims he cannot feel anything special, yet after Usutu gives him his Walkman, Matt enters a strange trance.
Eris Quod Sum
Usutu prepares some food for Hiro and Ando and gives it to them in a bowl. He explains that the recipe for it has been in his family for thousands of years, for use with spirit walking. Hiro eats a bit, visibly disgusted by it but unaware it is the food that Usutu is describing. Ando does not eat any at all. Hiro asks what he is supposed to do next. He says the food is made from the roots of a tambotie tree and hyena dung and tells Hiro to wait. In a few moments, Hiro's eyes turn white and he falls onto his back. Ando tries to revive him, but to no avail.
Villains
When Hiro's precognitive trance is momentarily disturbed, Usutu and Ando heat the paste such that it gives off fumes. Usutu warns Ando not to take in the fumes, and then he holds the bowl up to Hiro. Hiro smells the fumes and resumes his trance.
Notes
- In a question and answer session, writers Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite said that Usutu's paste is less like the genetic modification formula and more like Isaac's heroin. They also liken it to Dumbo's magic feather.
