Voices without bodies begin their plan to destroy The Company.
The Company successfully recruited Matt Neuenberg to help them with their operations. It didn't hurt that when Matt met Elle, sparks began to fly. Now, Matt lives under The Company's roof and his powers are really put to the test.

Summary

Matt Neuenberg sits in the Company's computer control room. He thinks to himself how much he likes it there, and also how much he likes Elle, who stands behind him to check on his progress. Not wanting the Company to know he's enjoying himself, Matt pretends he's getting bored with looking at the same lines of code over and over again. Elle reminds him that what he's doing is important and gives him a shock to the nose.

When Elle leaves to get her and Matt some donuts, Matt notices two files on the screen he doesn't recognize: T. Monk and K. Apila. These files turn out to be Richard Drucker and Hana Gitelman inside the Company's computer mainframe using their abilities. Drucker lets Hana know the two figures he conjured to represent them in cyberspace was as close as he could get to their "purushas," which Drucker also explains is an individual's non-physical body. Hana asks him if this is his invention, but Drucker says the internet isn't an invention, but a universe that talked to him through musical notes and allowed him to show it to the world. Drucker tells Hana he needs her help pulling a massive viral file from his hard drive location, which he believes will destroy the Company's entire mainframe.

Back in the real world, Matt and Elle wonder why the transmission is coming from Bhutan. Matt tells Elle to call Mr. Bishop and ask if Bhutan means anything. When Elle does so, her father tells her something and she drops the phone, then pushes Matt out of the way. She opens a device and pulls out a pair of goggles. Matt asks what those are, but Elle is already putting them on Matt's face. She tells him she needs to destroy the computer mainframe, so the goggles are going to help store all the information from the computer mainframe in his mind. Matt wonders how they'll pull the information out later, to which Elle replies they'll find some way as she hits a button on the device. Instantly, the entirety of the mainframe is shown to Matt through the goggles as it stores itself in his brain.

Trivia

  • While inside the Company's mainframe, Drucker's handle is "T. Monk" and Hana's is "K. Apila". Thelonious Monk was a great jazz musician and Kapila was a sixth century B.C. Hindu writer. In an email, R.D. Hall said, "I came up with those handles to further hint at Drucker's interest in jazz and Samkhya."
  • Elle calls Matt "keyboard samurai". The nickname is actually a moniker writer R.D. Hall gave to a friend; in an interview, R.D. said he used the name in Hana and Drucker's Plot Discovered to honor the friend.
