HI. I don't know how this wiki thing works abd I can't find an email link so I can email you guys. Anyway, I thought you might like to know of a YouTube series that is parralleling the Heroes TV show. It's called IncidentalHeroes - http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=IncidentalHeroes - It's about a girl who has a power and the TV show starts to become real. We are HUGE heroes fan and produce the show. We thought it might fit your fan produced section. Thanks!! And Thanks for such an awesome website!

Thanks for the kind insults. I will refrain from ever going to this site again. To be quite frank, telling me that I'm making mistakes reminds me of Star Trek conventions and why normal people don't go to them. We all loved Star Trek, but feeling like an idiot because you misspelled Klingon will make anyone just walk away. Spelling telling me I spelled Claire incorrectly is just insulting.

Thanks but goodbye and good luck --ScarCat 14:32, 18 February 2007

  • Hi, ScarCat. A few of us have replied over on your talk page if you're interested. (Admin 14:58, 18 February 2007 (EST))

wikEd

  • I know a couple of you guys use Firefox, so I thought I'd recommend a Greasemonkey script called wikEd. It basically replaces the default edit toolbar with a much more robust one (find and replace/replace all--including regular expressions, more markup, undo/redo, display differences, a bunch of cleanup macros, jump links between the edit window and the preview, and a bunch more). It also color-codes the text in the edit window and makes links clickable in edit view (so you can jump to templates from the template call and the like). It's worth a try. It's a bit garish at first, but the features are really nice. Heck, it's worth it just for the find & replace.--Hardvice (talk) 21:54, 16 November 2007 (EST)
    • Find and replace is my biggest bane. I'll check it out. Thanks. (Admin 21:56, 16 November 2007 (EST))
      • Yeah, I've been c n'ping into Wordpad. This is nicer. Inline. Bidirectional. And regular expressions. What's not to love? Incidentally, if all of the highlighting and previews and stuff get in the way, you can turn them off. I just learned that.--Hardvice (talk) 22:00, 16 November 2007 (EST)
        • Looking through the source there are a lot of hardcoded URLs to other sites, so I'm going to have to analyze the script more carefully before I feel comfortable using it myself. (Admin 22:07, 16 November 2007 (EST))
    • Sounds very cool. I hope it doesn't slow down my system. Okay, here's where my ignorance shows--how do you install it? I got the script, but what do I do with it? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:08, 16 November 2007 (EST)
      • Do you know how to install Firefox plugins? You need to install the Greasemonkey plugin first and then when you click the install link on the page Hardvice linked to it will trigger the plugin and install it for you. (Admin 22:28, 16 November 2007 (EST))
        • I don't. I'll have Japanimation help me out tomorrow before The Post Show. Incidentally, if you get a chance to analyze the script, let me know what you find. Thanks. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:34, 16 November 2007 (EST)
          • You can also install my awesome IMDb title re-linker script once you've got Greasemonkey. It relinks all of the titles on IMDb to the full credits view. Okay, it's not actually awesome, but it's useful for co-appearances.--Hardvice (talk) 22:35, 16 November 2007 (EST)

Help!!! What'd I do to my talk page!??:!?

My archiving went kaflewey :( --SacValleyDweller (talk) 23:42, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

  • Looks like Heroe has you covered. -- Lulu (talk) 23:43, 1 April 2008 (EDT)
    • Yeah, you were missing a second brace at the end if your blurbclose. Good work, Heroe! (Admin 23:44, 1 April 2008 (EDT))

Page move over redirect

Hi. The page Upstate New York bar needs to be moved back to Cody bar. I did this once, and it was undone by MiamiVolts due to a misunderstanding, which we worked out here and here. But now that the redirect exists, an admin needs to do the move. Thanks, --Tisco 16:06, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

  • You can move any page. It's at the top of the page, it'll say "move" next to history.--Bob (talk) 16:28, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
    • You can move any page over a redirect, so long as the redirect page has no history other than being a redirect. Otherwise, it requires an administrator to delete it. In any case, the Cody bar situation has been taken care off. Thanks.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:45, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

NEW ARTICLES

How do we create a new article?

  • You click on a red link. If you don't see a red link, you can create one by placing links (double brackets) around a word or words that you want to turn into the title of the new page. The other way to create a red link is to type the title of the article into the search bar and hit "Go". Then, the search results will say "You searched for" and the red link should be there. Click the red link, and you can begin creating your page. When the blank page comes up, you can click one of the "buttons" at the top of the page to obtain a template for the new page, which should help you in writing it. If you want to practice first, you can create a userpage for yourself. Just click on this red link--User:Divineseries--and get creative! :) Let me know if you need some help... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:37, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

Tim Kring in The Write Environment

--BigTime 17:51, 15 December 2008 (EST) Dear Webmaster,

The Write Environment, a new DVD series that interviews writers in their writing spaces, has interviewed HEROES creator, Tim Kring. The DVD is now available at select stores and online at www.thewriteenvironment.com.

Below is a YouTube clip of some of the interviews which you can also embed to your site.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04qJmAgjniY

I thought this would be worth sharing with HEROES fans as Tim talks extensively about HEROES.

Best,

  • Thank you for the information. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:52, 19 December 2008 (EST)
    • Saw a clip of this from the website. It looks quite interesting, though I don't fancy shelling out cash for it (it's a recession, people!). I guess I'm a bit tight like that. ;)--  Lost Soul   talk  contribs  04:01, 19 December 2008 (EST)

Articles for Deletion

I think there are a lot of articles for deletion now, so an administrator should probably go through them. A bunch were added recently due to some moves and a user creating fan pages in the mainspace, and about the same number look to be easy userspace deletes that have not been gotten to yet.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:27, 11 January 2009 (EST)

  • It looks like Bob is getting them. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:31, 11 January 2009 (EST)
    • Yeah, thanks Bob for getting them!--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:50, 12 January 2009 (EST)

Infobox explosions

I bring this up in relation to the Infobox for Sylar, which is is probably the longest and most unwieldy Infobox on the site. "Portrayed by" includes not just Zachary Quinto, but everyone that has ever played a shape-changed or illusion-altered Sylar in the history of the show (fourteen actors, at present); he also has sixteen aliases. I'm of the opinion that the infobox should be pretty short and concise. List the main actor who plays the role; list abilities the character is currently known to possess (leaving out abilities the character once possessed but has lost); list aliases that are not specific impersonations of other characters. Articles have plenty of room for character details; the infobox should be a short summary (in my opinion). In any case, to prevent edit wars breaking out, I think it may be a good idea to develop a policy to set limits on infoboxes. The problem is primarily on the Sylar page, although Peter's page has flirted with it and currently lists four actors as playing the role. --Ted C 12:21, 4 May 2009 (EDT)

  • I'm not opposed to moving the minor portrayals and aliases to a separate list on the article, and adding in the infobox "and others", with a link over the word "others". Sounds like a good idea, though perhaps this should be discussed on the community portal.--MiamiVolts (talk) 10:06, 5 May 2009 (EDT)
    • I've used comment tags to reduce the size of the Sylar Infobox and recommended discussion on his talk page. --Ted C 10:16, 5 May 2009 (EDT)

A few questions

Hi, I am coming from wikia's bleach wiki. In light of the upcoming change in the wikia skin, we are considering moving our content to a new host. Could I ask which hosting service you are using and whether or not you like them?--Godisme 22:29, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

  • I answered this on my user talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:49, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Server testing

Could someone/some people switch temporarily to http://new.heroeswiki.com and do their editing and browsing from there for a little while? I have a new server running and I want to make sure I didn't miss anything important. Files have been synced from the main site, however any uploads from this moment won't show on the test site. File uploads are disabled on the test site so that you don't accidentally upload there (since they'd be lost when I migrate the wiki). You can edit articles on the test site and the changes will be reflected on the main site. If you do test it out, please let me know how it goes either way. (Admin (talk) 22:59, 22 August 2015 (EDT))

  • Sure. What am I looking for? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:02, 23 August 2015 (EDT)
    • Nothing in particular. Just some eyeballs on the site to make sure nothing unexpectedly broke. It's not high priority. I looked around and everything seemed fine at first glance at least. The MediaWiki version is the same. (Admin (talk) 00:09, 23 August 2015 (EDT))
      • Yeah, seems fine to me. I'll keep my eyes peeled... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:33, 23 August 2015 (EDT)
  • Since we're talking about a new server ... There are two things that I see as bugs with the way the wiki is still running. First, Special:WantedPages is not correct, and so it's not a very useful tool at all. I think it's actually an issue with the #ifexist: function. A lot of the templates (like Template:character box) use #ifexist: to link to things like portrayers, location articles, or episode names. It seems like the wiki is now making red links for anything that is in that spot on the template, regardless of whether the article exists or not.

The second thing I'm seeing as an issue is that the double dash (--) is supposed to print as an em dash (—), but it isn't.

Anything else? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:31, 24 August 2015 (EDT)

    • Trying to fix these (at least the WantedPages issue) will be saved for the next MediaWiki upgrade. As for the mdash I'm frankly just not sure I can fix that anymore with the changes that they've made to the software since the early days. When I DO try to fix it it ends up corrupting the articles. I will try again during the next upgrade (which I'll start shortly after migrating in the new server), but given the amount of grief it's caused trying to fix it's not a high priority for me. Out of curiosity, is there anything preventing us from just changing it to &mdash or is it just the work of editing old pages? (Admin (talk) 12:40, 24 August 2015 (EDT))
      • You hit the nail on the head. The wantedpages issue is huge and should be a priority for the next upgrade (or earlier?) ... The em dash is minor. There's nothing wrong with using the code, it's just easier to type -- rather than — when editing. And you're right, going back and changing all the old pages is doable, but is a huge hassle... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:12, 24 August 2015 (EDT)
        • Got it, thanks! (Admin (talk) 14:31, 24 August 2015 (EDT))
    • I did not have any problems with the new one. There is a minor display thing with the drop down for move, etc. on both the old and new one. -Lөvөl 15:28, 25 August 2015 (EDT)
  • Ok, I'm going to be shutting down the test server now for a while until the migration. Thanks for the testing. (Admin (talk) 14:34, 25 August 2015 (EDT))
