Source/Explanation
Cloaking is known from Star Trek as an ability to hide something..

Illusion

As far as we know, invisibility usually does not extend to such a degree. The object was not displaced, merely concealed. I am guessing that this power is Illusion generation, as seen by the effect which is very similar to the effect that is associated with Candice Wilmer's ability. Just a thought.--Cerebro 20:08, 21 October 2009 (EDT)

  • Reality distortion ("The Prankster", Teddy): The ability to distort the reality of those around oneself. -- Mike the Man-child!
    • I think it was Illusion just like Candice, I think he was also the one who conceal the carnival from the police who's chasing Sylar, it was just a thought. --Darkfiremaster13 05:56, 22 October 2009 (EDT)
      • It also uses a "shimmering" effect similar to the one Candice used to use. - Hive 16:56, 23 October 2009 (EDT)

Cloaking

He is able to hide objects from view, but also could cover up the sounds of the carnival under his "cloak" so that the police were unaware. It can be seen as similar to Candice's power, but seems much more specific, as Candice could distort reality in several ways, while Teddy thus far has only shown the ability to cover things up.--Sander326 20:56, 27 October 2009 (EDT)

  • I like that name, it's kinda like a long range invisibility. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 20:21, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
    • Cool. This neatly describes what he did, and sounds good too.--Ratclaws 21:04, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
      • I like it as well --Vampirate68 | Talk | Contribs | 21:27, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
        • Me too. This is a good name for what we have seen of the ability.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 21:29, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
          • Although speculative, the name is great. AltesUTC CH
            • To cloak can be interpreted as to hide something from sight, which is exactly what Teddy did. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 16:09, 28 October 2009 (EDT)
              • Agreed. Describes perfectly what has been demonstrated on the show, and will do fine until we get a more definitive name. --Darmenos 11:05, 29 October 2009 (EDT)
                • I don't think it "describes perfectly" what we've seen...but I'm not opposed to the name. I think it's a good name. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:45, 29 October 2009 (EDT)
                  • Allow me to shamelessly kidnap this discussion, and direct your attention to a similar matter: can you see if you support calling Trevor's ability "Blasting"? All you need to know is in its talk page. Circumstances are similar to this. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 20:11, 29 October 2009 (EDT)
                    • *smiles innocently* You are very optimistic. I said "cloaking" may be speculative - I meant by that that Teddy may not hide objects, but literally make them vanish from reality and then return them. Like dimensional storage, I think. It could be also an example of illusion (suggesting that there was no container in the first place), or even telepathy... AltesUTC CH
                      • With the more peripheral characters, abilities may be more vague, but that hasn't stopped naming their abilities in the past (Sedation, Seismic burst, etc).--Sander326 15:52, 30 October 2009 (EDT)
                      • Also, if you go the route of saying his power is illusion or telepathy (where he has not demonstrated anything to that effect) then you can make the leap that any power is only illusionary and the world of Heroes is just a dream. And if Teddy's power was one of these more powerful abilities, wouldn't Samuel be shown using him for more offensive purposes?--Sander326 01:20, 1 November 2009 (EDT)
                        • How can you use illusion offensively? Unless it evolves somehow. And btw everyone knows that the world of Heroes is Mr. Muggles's dream. AltesUTC CH
                          • Please keep the Mr Muggles crap at Mr Muggle's page. Anyway, Candice used illusion offensively, just mentally offensively when she made the guy who hit her friend go crazy. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 12:41, 1 November 2009 (EST)
  • Hmm, this discussion has gotten a bit off track. It's quite simple: he cloaked the container. It didn't move, there is no evidence it went to another dimension, and illusion and telepathy are speculative. Powers are named on what we see of them (when the name isn't given, of course), not the fact that other powers can do the same thing (ex: Heating could be Microwave emission, but it was named on what we saw of it). What we saw him do was cloak it.--Ratclaws 18:05, 1 November 2009 (EST)
    • I really like the name Cloaking. Should we do one of those consensus things? -Vampirate68 | Talk | Contribs | 17:05, 3 November 2009 (EST)
      • Not just yet, take a look at edit summary for this edit. I think one day is enough, considering the message I left for the edit summary, it'll catch people's attention. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 17:43, 3 November 2009 (EST)
        • Yes! Finally it will become Cloaking!--Catalyst · Talk · HL 17:46, 3 November 2009 (EST)
          • Times like this, being loud (or in this case, caps lock) helps. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 17:51, 3 November 2009 (EST)
            • Yeah we need someone to force it through, or it won't change. Now for all the other possessor's name abilities...-- By Danko CH 17:57, 3 November 2009 (EST)
              • Well, I've been pushing "blasting" for Trevor's ability for a while now, and while I have seen people disagreeing, I haven't seen many people agreeing as well. For now, it's a positive outlook, but few people have supported it. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 18:00, 3 November 2009 (EST)

Dimensional storage

Teddy's ability could also be Dimensional storage?

  • I believe it was considered somewhere, but since there's no indication the box went somewhere, it was ruled out. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 15:12, 1 November 2009 (EST)

Consensus reached?

Whats it being renamed to?-- By Danko CH 17:45, 3 November 2009 (EST)

                • Well, the one day I proposed in a section above came and went, no one opposed, I'm moving this page. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 18:01, 4 November 2009 (EST)
                  • And there was much rejoicing!!! Now onto Gordon's ability, Trevor's ability, Tom's ability, and Maya's brother's ability. Sadly, I doubt Damien's will ever be solved.--Ratclaws 18:14, 4 November 2009 (EST)
                    • Trevor's can be "blasting", I'll never pushing that one around. I've suggested "crumbling" and "collapsing" for Tom's, Alejandro's can be "poison absorption and neutralization", a la "bliss and horror" and "activation and deactivation", I remember suggesting "mineralization" for Gordon's, opposing "silification" because not all sand is silicate oxide, but "sand transmutation" isn't really an offshot, people didn't like it because it can be interpreted as transmuting sand into other stuff. Carnival

The ability used to cloak the Carnival from the detective in Tabula Rasa, maybe was Teddy who make that... Gabrielense 07:29, 11 November 2009 (EST)

  • Yeah possibly-- By Danko CH 07:40, 11 November 2009 (EST)
    • Actually, I get the feeling Arnold was moving the Carnival (hence why he seemed so relieved to finally "stop moving"). --Ricard Desi (t,c) 23:15, 26 November 2009 (EST)

Foreshadowing

Anyone else think that because of this scene and the nature of the carnival, a lot of new powers are going to be shown once then never used again this season?--PJDEP 22:32, 26 November 2009 (EST)

Appearance and disappearance

While I hate to do this because cloaking is actually a good name, Edgar's list claims that Teddy "makes things appear and disappear". So I guess we (unfortunately) have to rename this to "appearance and disappearance", right? Despite the name being awkward, we do have "activation and deactivation", so I see no problem with the rename. Ugh.--Referos 08:28, 28 January 2010 (EST)

  • I don't think so, as you said Edgar writes that Teddy can "makes things appear and disappear". He only describe an ability, I think we can use it if he said "Appearance and Disapperance". The appearance and disapperance was also already on the description. But I don't know, this was only my thinking. --Dark Master 08:43, 28 January 2010 (EST)
    • I know, but generally, if a character/sources uses a verb to describe an ability and that verb could be constructed into a noun, we use that, even though it's not an explicit name. For instance, someone said that Sylar had the ability to melt. Since "to melt" can be converted into a noun, we name the ability "melting".--Referos 08:49, 28 January 2010 (EST)
      • To cloak something is to make something seem to appear and disappear. --Ricard Desi (t,c) 08:55, 28 January 2010 (EST)
        • But we should use the verb given in a canon source, not a verb that we think also describes the ability.--Referos 09:55, 28 January 2010 (EST)
          • The description "makes things appear and disappear" is just that, a description. Edgar is by no means an expert, and the term "cloaking" applies perfectly to that description. --Ricard Desi (t,c) 10:43, 28 January 2010 (EST)
            • I'm not saying that Edgar's list is an explicit and expert source like the Assignment Tracker. What I'm saying is that, yes, sometimes we get explicit canon names from documents, profiles, etc, but we can also "construct" a canon name from a description. The naming conventions say so: Names derived from a canon or near-canon description (invisibility from "Nobody sees me! I'm invisible!", flight from "I think I can fly!") should be treated as though the name is from a canon or near-canon source. Edgar said Teddy can make things appear and disappears, so the name "appearance and disappearance" should be treated as canon, trumping "cloaking".--Referos 12:27, 28 January 2010 (EST)
              • The issue with that is that we quickly box ourselves into awkward ability names that don't quite fit the bill. If what you're suggesting is held to, then in Genesis we'd be calling Parkman's ability hearing people's thoughts or mindreading. Common names are far preferable when dealing with implicit ability descriptions. --Ricard Desi (t,c) 12:36, 28 January 2010 (EST)
                • Well, not really because we have the (unwritten) policy that explicit names trump all and "telepathy" was given explicitly. Anyway, I'm just trying to apply what the naming conventions dictate, but if you prefer we could add this issue as another problem with the current naming conventions.--Referos 13:00, 28 January 2010 (EST)
                  • We didn't use "Touch and Go" for Matt Jr's ability even though Hiro and Ando said "Baby touch and go", we didn't even named the ability that even a day it was always Matt Jr's ability before it became "Activation and Deactivation" as far as I remember. And "Activation and deactivation" only came from an idea from one of us here on the wiki. --Dark Master 08:14, 29 January 2010 (EST)
