Heroes Countdown to Premiere Contest
http://www.myspace.com/the-channel It asks everyone why they're the biggest Heroes fan in 30 seconds or less and says you have a chance to be on TV. Your thoughts? I'm gonna compile my videos since they're all short and submit that.--Riddler 15:18, 5 September 2008 (EDT)
- I guess Main Page is the wrong place to discuss this? I put it here 'cause I figured it'd go under news, if anything.--Riddler 14:42, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
- Oh, I didn't think there was anything to discuss. I thought you were just letting us know. What did you want to discuss? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:47, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
- ...Didn't think that far into it. Anyone submitting anything, maybe? Or does it belong in the news section? >_>;--Riddler 14:51, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

Preparing for S.3
Given that we are entering the last week before the season premiere, what about replacing the "latest webisode" blurb with the "latest episode" one (i.e. Powerless)? The "Going Postal" webisodes are (sorta) a closed book, and with NBC's heavy promotion of the third season, it's likely that new people will stumble upon Heroes Wiki, presumably looking for info on where the series left off: Powerless. Pierre 07:27, 15 September 2008 (EDT)
- Agree. By the way, Timm Keppler and Jim Martin are busy writing the next set of webisodes now, I believe. As far as I can gather, they won't have anything to do with Going Postal. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:49, 15 September 2008 (EDT)
- Since we're gonna have the Eps, GNs, and Webisodes this season, how are we going to arrange them on the Main page? Personaly, I'd go for all three in the left hand column below the welcome message. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 10:26, 15 September 2008 (EDT)
- Yeah, and if you're looking for order, I would suggest eps first, then webisodes, then GNs. If that takes up too much room, the DYK section can be trimmed or hidden--it's really just filler anyway. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:45, 15 September 2008 (EDT)

We need to...
I think we need to archive everyone's character history into Season One and Season Two, like we've done with all the main characters. Thoughts?--Citizen 09:00, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
- If they are in multiple seasons and have a long page. -Lөvөl 13:29, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
- Yeah, I don't see any reason to archive Meredith's history or Nidia's history, for example. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:35, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
- We should archive only for characters who have been in more than one season. It makes the wiki look better and more organized.--Citizen 16:26, 25 September 2008 (EDT)
- Ditto. Also, I think we should write the summary for seasons chronologically. For example, in the Haitian's article, the summary for the It Takes a Village arc was put behind the summary for the episodes in the Season 1 summary. It'd be less confusing for others if we put it in front of the season 1 episodic history. Chrisyu357 03:21, 28 September 2008 (EDT)
- I definitely don't think we should archive all characters who are in multiple seasons. For instance, Kin Egami appeared in two seasons, but it would be ridiculous to archive what amounts to about ten lines of history. I do think we should simply take characters who have appeared (or been mentioned) a lot and look at them on a case-by-case situation. If their pages are long and they look like they'll be back for another round of episodes in an upcoming season, then we'll archive their page. If they're at the end of their run (hello, Isaac!) then their pages can remain a little long. Hence, characters like Monica Dawson and Elle Bishop really don't need to be archived. In fact, I think their pages should be restored and the archives deleted. All it amounts to is an extra click for people who want to read about that character. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 04:11, 28 September 2008 (EDT)
- We all know Heroes has graphic novels, and writing character histories in chronological order would make this a richer wiki. We're wasting that opportunity by not even referencing the GN events in some of the character season histories. Also, we don't have to archive EVERYONE'S histories, only the main character's histories. Kin's Season One and Season Two histories would just go on the article.--Citizen 23:31, 28 September 2008 (EDT)
- I don't think we're talking about the same thing. I was talking about taking the character histories and putting them (or not putting them) on a separate page at the end of the season. I think you're talking about including graphic novels in those summaries, and about making the summaries chronological. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:35, 28 September 2008 (EDT)

- I edited Kin's page to look like this (I reverted it immediately). Does that look sloppy or ridiculous to you? We can make it so that only the characters that have been in Portal:Main Characters and/or have been in more than one season have archived histories. Also, making the summaries chronological wouldn't be a bad idea. Imagine how awesome Adam's page would look like :).--Citizen 23:41, 28 September 2008 (EDT)
- It seems pointless to me. Why generalize the season instead of being specific with the episode? And as awesome as Adam's page would be, imaging how confusing Hiro's page would be--do we start with the 1671 stuff, or do we start with him learning of his abilities in October 2006? And think about how screwed up pages like Gael's would be, where he dies around March 20, 2007, and then hires Donna shortly thereafter. Hmm... And what about those events that are in an unspecified future or an unspecified time in the past? Good luck trying to sort those out! :) No, I definitely don't think organizing events in chronological order is a good idea. I think it opens us up for a ton of speculation and confusingly written articles, not to mention the 200+ articles that would have to be reformatted (and that's if we only do the character articles and not the items, places, locations, etc.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:20, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
- This discussion sounds familiar to me. I know the question of why we order the information by episode/graphic novel has come up a few times before and ordering the events chronologically cause the problems Ryan mentioned plus makes it more difficult for those who may not be up to date on the episodes (like people in other countries) to sort through the information they're supposed to know already. (Admin 00:25, 29 September 2008 (EDT))
- The way we order information is not able to go chronologically because of Adam, Hiro, and the Founders. We should order the information by the seasons/episodes/graphic novels. It would be helpful to readers also who are just starting into Heroes and want to know what went on in past seasons. It also is still partially chronological, because no one would have known about the past in the present without Hiro. (ORVAL24 22:47, 2-14-2009 A.D.)
Punctuation of episodes and graphic novels
I don't think they should all be italicized. The title of a show (Heroes) or a book (Saving Charlie) can be, but an episode ("Angels and Monsters") or a comic ("Resistance") should have quotes. Therequiembellishere 19:56, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- That's the way we've always done it here, so we're following that format (italics instead of quotes) for consistency.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:00, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- I've noticed, its just that it's incorrect. I know we can change them all en masse, but is there a way to, er, stop italicising? Therequiembellishere 20:02, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- It's not incorrect; it's just our own formatting. Just like there's MLA and AP style/formatting, we have our own format guidelines for the wiki. Help:Style details many of those guidelines. However, they are open to debate and suggestions for improvement. If there does need to be a global change, Admin might be able to do so using a bot.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:20, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- I don't see any reason for a change. Some styles dictate that episodes titles are italicized, some dictate that they are put in quotation marks. In fact, some styles dictate that even the titles of television shows are put in quotation marks rather than italicized. Miami is right--it's a matter of choice. I'm used to the way we do things here so it bugs me to see other styles on other sites, but that doesn't make them wrong. Likewise, just because our style differs from the styles of some other sites, that doesn't mean ours is wrong. There are many accepted formatting guidelines. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:43, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- Okay, I just always learned it the way I talked about above. Therequiembellishere 21:01, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- Actually, so did I! It wasn't until I was much older and actually out of college that I learned there are multiple acceptable ways of formatting italics/quotation marks/etc. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:25, 14 October 2008 (EDT)

Am I seeing the main page differently to everyone else?
I have tried it on two browsers and on both there is a huge space at the bottom right when people shorten the trivia. Is this because people have got adds switched off? If so people with them on should probably get priority.--Skywalkerrbf 09:25, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- I don't have ads switched off, yet for me (as of current revision, without a trimmed DYK), the DYK is waaaaaaayyy too long. Radicell 09:26, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- Hmm I wonder why this is? I think the easiest thing to do would be to go half way. I will trim it from how it is now so that it is not like too short and then you can tell me if it is still too long for you. Is the Heroes Evolutions on the right for you?--Skywalkerrbf 09:29, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- There. It is now like really short for me, how is it for you?--Skywalkerrbf 09:30, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- It looks better now, there's still a small blue space since the Heroes Evolutions on the left ends slightly shorter than the DYK at the right. But it was better than before. How does it look for you? Radicell 09:31, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- Theres a gap as big as the last 3 DYK but if it is not like that for everyone else then i don't mind.--Skywalkerrbf 09:36, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- Different people use different browsers, and different computers are different widths. I have seen full screen, wide screen, and something I can only describe as super wide screen. Each individual screen width, browser type, and font size will change the way a page's layout looks--the main page being a prime page for differences. There's no way to make it perfect for everybody, unfortunately. I'm checking it on two different browsers on two different computers, and both look alright to me. There's a bit of space here and there, but it's generally pretty good right now. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:17, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- Earlier the latest episode summary was the full article, and all the boxes were in one big column. Now it's fixed though. -- Hyperdude 13:05, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

Ads
May I suggest doing what Wikia, another wiki-hosting site does, and only showing ads for unregistered users? The ads are blocked for users as soon as they sign in or register. This method would also help people to register. Again, these are just suggestions, and they seem to work very well for Wikia. I just thought I would bring them up. Thanks. Freakatone 21:33, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- Hey, Freakatone, thanks for the suggestion. :) Since we don't ask for any external funding and we donate much of our revenue to charity, I think a few ads (2 on the main page and 1 on the rest now) are a small price for us all to pay whether registered or not. It's such a simple and passive way to help out. I know a lot of frequent visitors specifically turn off ad blocking for this site in order to help out and it's definitely appreciated. Don't show upcoming episode summaries on the Main Page
Simply put: they're spoilers, and it's weird having to avert my eyes from part of the front page every time I visit. Anyone else feel the same way? - Chardish 16:47, 22 October 2008 (EDT)

- They were originally not supposed to be taken from places like tv guide, but instead summarized and de-spoiled. I thought they were nice, but it seems like they're not worth maintaining spoiler-free. (Admin 19:28, 22 October 2008 (EDT))
- I'll just go ahead and remove it. The link that's there points to the episode page, and the smaller link goes directly to the spoiler page. Plus, it'll clean up the page a bit. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:18, 22 October 2008 (EDT)
- How about a little countdown box on the side somewhere that'll say "Dying Of the Light airs in UK in 3 days!" and stuff like that. No more information revealed, just the title and where it airs. Thoughts? --Isaac Mendez 07:43, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

- I'd even say that what is up at the moment is too much. I'm one of those that wants to be completely spoiler free so when it says "One of Angela's relatives is still alive" I get annoyed. You may not specify who but I'm going to start to put clues together and figure it out. Even if I don't figure it out, it's still a surprise ruined. It's hard enough to refrain from watching the show over the internet as it is (I live in the UK but have digital TV so I'm only 1 week behind). I think I've probably ranted enough but I would like to see the box on the front page reduced to a mere link to the page if possible. Is that too extreme? Snoops619 10:46, 20 April 2009 (EDT)
- The conversation here is old, but I don't think it's referring to the aotw. I think it's referring to when we used to put the summary for the upcoming episode on template:nextepisode. The summary for the episode that already aired is completely appropriate. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 10:51, 20 April 2009 (EDT)
- Yes, the episode 1961 has aired for you Americans however, for the U.K. viewers 1961 will air next week on terrestrial T.V. (Today on Digital). So you see, your episode reviewing is previewing for us. I'm not saying 'Don't make a page for it at all and don't mention it on the Main Page' but rather, just put a link instead of the Summery of what will happen. Snoopy 14:20, 20 April 2009 (EDT)

Popups?
I've been experience an increase of popups occurring on this site... does this have something to do with the new advertisements? They all seem to be advertising something like "Take this survey now"... etc. And my popup blocker doesn't seem to be able to block them either. Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 11:08, 24 October 2008 (EDT)
- I've seen them, too; they're very annoying. Yes, it's related to the new ads. I'm talking to the people at NBC to try to get rid of them. (Admin 11:10, 24 October 2008 (EDT))
- Until it can get pulled, try clicking on the popup and then clicking the "No thanks" link on the following page. I did that before and I stopped getting them. Then once I cleared out the cookie it added I started getting them again, so I think the survey is honoring the "No thanks" response. (Admin 13:49, 24 October 2008 (EDT))
World Watch
I saw this on lostpedia. It’s a little box that shows where a few countries in the world are in the season. For example, it would say the date, time and network the next episode would air and it’s name for countries around the globe, like Britain and Australia. Similar to the system you have already for America. I think it promote a more global community.--Thetobiasempire (talk) 23:13, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
- That's kind of hard to do without giving away spoilers, but post-episode we do have Portal:International Locations. I guess we could also add a world map, but that's kind of already implemented for us as the assignment tracker map.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:43, 31 October 2008 (EDT)

- Received it today, but I'm torn. It's unopened in a plastic wrapper and in perfect condition. The ODI took very good care of it. Do I open it, read it, and scan it? Or do I not mess with it in case it becomes valuable? I mean, I never plan on selling it, but still. I don't know. =/ It's from Comicon, and has Echo, Mohinder, and Adam (I think) on the cover.--Riddler 15:54, 12 December 2008 (EST)
- If you are considering ever selling it at all, I'd recommend keeping it in the closet wrapped so it stays preserved and in its original wrapper (collector's items are worth more that way). If you have family living with you, put it in the attic or somewhere safe where you don't expect anyone will bother it. Then in a dozen years or so, assuming it has not been thrown in the trash, take it to an appraiser...it could very well be worth at least a few grand or so to a collector by then. But just the same, it may also still not be worth much at all...that's the risk you take. Anyways, congrats!--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:12, 12 December 2008 (EST)

Heroes Ratings
Will Heroes be returning or will it be axed? If it is axed it will be a big bummer.--Harrypotter1994 05:35, 8 November 2008 (EST)

DYK section
So, with the webisodes airing again, the Webisodes section is now on the Main Page. For me, the Did You Know section just sort of sticks out of the bottom, making the Main Page look ugly. Should we remove it? What does it look like for y'all? Radicell 09:08, 11 November 2008 (EST)
- I'd rather leave it on the page, but re-arrange things. I had the columns evened out with the Latest Evolutions in the right column and the interviews on the bottom of the first column, but Pierre changed it. You can see what that looked like here.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:39, 11 November 2008 (EST)

Next Graphic Novel...
This needs an edit, tomorrow is not Dec 2...
- It's done. Not exactly sure why it said that; some sort of template that I'm unfamiliar with was being used for the date instead of just regular text. Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 23:27, 24 November 2008 (EST)
Poll
I think we should add a poll right under the DYK blurb on the Main Page. We could ask different questions every week like "What did you think of the episode/graphic novel?" or "Who do you think ____ is?". Thoughts?--Citizen 12:17, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- I think that could be an interesting idea... it could link right to maybe a discussion subpage off the Heroes Wiki:Community portal or perhaps even the episode's talk page. As I've said in the past I don't like the idea of setting up a separate message board for Heroes Wiki, but I've always been in favor of encouraging discussion within the wiki itself. (Admin 12:49, 29 November 2008 (EST))
- I don't see the advantage of polling, but I'm not opposed to it. If we add polling, it might help to add an extension to enable their easy creation. There is the PollDaddy extension, which allows people to include free polls created at PollDaddy.com in MediaWikis such as HeroesWiki. Also, there is Extension:Poll, which would enable polls written locally at HeroesWiki. The "Poll" extension is probably faster as it would be entirely HeroesWiki based, but the "PollDaddy" extension contains a few more bells and whistles. Having not tried either, I don't really have a preference.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:56, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- PollDaddy's looks better. Also, it will help keep interest in the wiki during hiatuses and we can see what everyone thinks about the show.--Citizen 13:00, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- I like the idea, but I wouldn't call it a poll. I'd call it "discussion of the week" or something like that. That's really what it should be--more of a discussion and less of a vote or a poll. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:19, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- Just how would it be a discussion? There's be a question and options. That's a poll.--Citizen 14:38, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- Here's a prototype of what I'm envisioning:

That way it encourages discussion rather than just a simple vote. I don't see much purpose in a vote on something (especially something that won't have any bearing, like "what did you think of the latest episode?" or "what do you think of the new idea for the main page?") if there's no talk and discussion on the idea. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:55, 29 November 2008 (EST)

- I know I'm new here, but I think this idea has potential: this is a big wiki, and members (both new and veterans) sometimes may wonder "what could I do now?", with this, the wiki gets a more invinting feel and we can direct users to discussions that could use some input. Let's say we find ourselves in another trick power naming situation, such as Puppet master before AT profile, we could direct users to a discussion like that, "add wood to the fire" so to speak. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 17:13, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- Isn't that counter-intuitive? Sorry about the pun, but we normally use the Current events page for that. When desired, we put topics that are having consensus checks there, and all pages with rename tags automatically appear there. I think it's the wrong idea to broadcast those on the main page. Rather, polls are a controlled means to garner anonymous feedback. That is something the wiki currently lacks, and I'm not opposed to adding it as such, but yet another template to direct people to a page where discussions are happening sounds to me like a bad idea.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:46, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- We could direct users there instead, depending on how many users go to discussions from there. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 17:56, 29 November 2008 (EST)
- I guess, but in a way we already do. The link for the current events page appears on the sidebar, which is viewable from every single page on the wiki.--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:46, 29 November 2008 (EST)

Twice the Webisodes
Should the Main Page reflect that both The Recruit and Hard Knox are current Webisode series? --Ricard Desi 21:02, 22 December 2008 (EST)
Latest GN apperance on this page
We had our latest GN section of this page look like the an episode during the last hiatus. Any reason why we can't do that now? --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:20, 30 December 2008 (EST)
- Not that I know of. I'll add it now.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:15, 30 December 2008 (EST)
- For that matter, why can't it look like that all the time? --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:13, 1 January 2009 (EST)
- Cause when it's a week when episodes are also airing, it makes the main page too long.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:18, 1 January 2009 (EST)

Bad link on main page
I noticed a bad link on the main page. The episode link for the latest episode (the one above the picture) is bad. Instead of linking to the episode, it links to the building. I'd fix it myself, but I can't figure out how/don't have enough edits to have been granted that authority.
If it's intentional, then disregard this message and delete this thread.--Uncanny474 21:45, 17 February 2009 (EST)
- Fixed. Thanks for the heads-up. You should have been able to edit it too. We don't have an edit count requirement here like there is at Wikipedia.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:12, 17 February 2009 (EST)
- Actually, main page editing is semi-protected so very new users aren't able to edit it for a little while (to prevent impulsive vandalism of the main page). (Admin 22:14, 17 February 2009 (EST))
- Ah, can they at least see the source code when they click the edit link? In this case, the edit that needed to be made was on the episode sidebar template and not the main page itself.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:19, 17 February 2009 (EST)

Main Page
- Was that a diliberate change, cause that page is bloody long. --Lolwut 18:02, 4 March 2009 (EST)
- Fixed. Meteoritu removed a noinclude tag from the episode article that put the whole thing in the main page. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 18:11, 4 March 2009 (EST)
Something wrong with the main page
I think there is a problem with the main page. It is just one column, Shades of Gray is taking up heaps of room and a red link for a graphic novel called Puppet with No Strings has appeared even though there is no new graphic novel out yet. -- Elemental Manipulator [ U | T | C ] - When in doubt, ask BTE 02:11, 10 March 2009 (EDT)
- Fixed, someone put a piece of code in the episode article in the wrong place. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:37, 10 March 2009 (EDT)
- And the other thing was that someone updated the GN template prematurely. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:39, 10 March 2009 (EDT)
- Yeah, that was my bad. I've fixed the code so it shouldn't wig everything out again. I probably should have also waited a bit to update the GN, just because Ryan can see the future doesn't mean I can :) --Piemanmoo 02:51, 10 March 2009 (EDT)

Sickness
- does anyone agree that there should be a catagory on every character that tells if the character has a sickness/ailment? For instance, Samson Gray has deadly cancer; its pretty important in the story line.
- I say that kind of thing should be written in the article, yes, but not exactly as a whole subsection for each character. Most characters don't have any ailments... why would it be a standard kind of thing? --Whizzles 12:24, 10 March 2009 (EDT)
- Your probably right. on the other hand the illnesses don't have to be current, for example, there could be a tag after the illness section that said if it was cured. --Tsmarg 10:52 14 March, 2009 (EDT)
