Noincludes
This is the only portal that has noincludes and includeonlys around the same content. I understand the idea of linking pics to portals on the portal pages, and to cats on the category pages. Maybe I'm missing something (which wouldn't be the first time), but shouldn't we do this for all portals, or just this one? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:13, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- Well, it only matters when there are subcats. Otherwise, there aren't any links to portals, just articles. But I'm pretty sure I set up some others to do this as well.--Hardvice (talk) 00:15, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- That's fine. It just seems cumbersome when it comes to adding new items, that you'd have to put it in the same article twice. Threw me off earlier today. I don't mind doing it, but I would think there'd be an easier way of doing things. Maybe I'm being obtuse. :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:17, 18 January 2007 (EST)
We could put the noincludes/includes in the portal templates, but that would probably break other pages. We could put them around the individual links, but then we'd need two for each item, which would get confusing and not save much space. And indeed, other portals are like this (Portal:Places, Portal:Events, and Portal:Graphic Novels) already when necessary. (Characters aren't, but then Category:Characters isn't subdivided the same way Portal:Characters is, and doesn't use the portal on the cat page.) (Actually, we can't put them in the templates, since then they wouldn't be included when the template is included. Brain fart there.)--Hardvice (talk) 00:19, 18 January 2007 (EST)- No, I don't think that's necessary. It's only an issue if someone not familiar with the portal (um, me earlier today) tries to add an item and it ... doesn't show up. Ugh. But it's no matter - just a bit of a hassle, right? ... Oh well. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:28, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- Yeah ... unfortunately, it's gonna be a hassle any way we do it. If we could get the template to do it, that could work. I'll have to see if there's a work-around for getting templates to write in noincludes and includeonlys when they are called, but normally they obviously apply to the template itself, not the page on which it's used. I'm open to other suggestions, of course ... anything to make the maintenance easier. BTW, right now Portal:Graphic Novels is 2x2, but it's 4x1 when it's included on Category: Graphic Novels. Not sure which is better.--Hardvice (talk) 00:33, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- Ahhh, I didn't catch that the different layouts. It looks better on the portal (2x2) - the 4x1 is not fitting on my browser. We could also do a row of 3 and a row of 1, but I personally don't like it that way. As for the noincludes, if you want to work on it, go ahead. It's a hassle to add an item twice, but not impossible. And not something that I have the brain power to do myself. :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:45, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- OK, I made it so only the subcats repeat, not the items which are in Category:Items itself. That should make it a little easier, since subcats shouldn't change that often.--Hardvice (talk) 00:40, 18 January 2007 (EST)
- Oh yeah, that makes sense. Good move. Thanks - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:47, 18 January 2007 (EST)

New subcats
I'm thinking of adding 2 new subcats to this portal: "Vehicles" (Hana's motorcycle, Jessica's Cadillac, and Nissan Versa) and "Jewelry" (Aron's diamonds, Claire's necklace, Skull ring, and Sylar's watch). I have a few reasons... The page isn't really getting bloated, but it sorta irks me to call a vehicle an "item" in this list; splitting out the vehicles just makes sense to me. But the main reason is because template:thingnav is running off my page. It'd be nice to split it into two rows. Adding two more cells would a nice 2x5 bar. Any objections, thoughts, comments? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:17, 17 March 2007 (EDT)
- It might be time to start thinking about more subcats to empty this out a bit again. There are a few options that might work: Clothing and Accessories, Electronics, Documents. Any ideas?--Hardvice (talk) 05:10, 22 October 2007 (EDT)
- I'd go for a documents portal, here it is--SacValleyDweller 18:35, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
- it might be time now to make an electronics subcat. The only sticking point is that the satellite isn't "electronics" in modern parlance.--SacValleyDweller (talk) 18:34, 29 November 2007 (EST)
- I don't think we're quite ready for a new subcat quite yet...though when we are, "electronics" is a definite possibility. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:26, 29 November 2007 (EST)
