Idea

So I saw something similar to this on another site, and thought it might work for us. It has the added benefit of filling in some very empty space on the Main Page. And it's interesting, quick facts, with links to articles. I just chose some random pieces of trivia -- I'm open to suggestions. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:35, 9 March 2007 (EST)

  • Hey, that's pretty cool!Heroe 18:53, 9 March 2007 (EST)
    • definitely a cool idea :) --Frantik (Talk) 18:56, 9 March 2007 (EST)
  • Great idea! And you're right, it does wonders to fill in that void of space on the front, without making it cluttered. Awesome little touch! --ZyberGoat 22:58, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Thanks. What I'd really like to do is have a bank of trivia, and have it only pull up, like, 7 random ones ... but I'm not sure I am familiar with the technology to do that. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:27, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
      • Ryan, this should help: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RandomInclude http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/RandomText is something that might also help.--Bob 03:12, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
        • Thanks, that looks pretty cool. Admin, any chance? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 05:04, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
          • The problem I see with either of those extensions is that there's no way to pull X (say, ten) random items from the same master list. That means either 1) pulling ten times from the same list, and risking duplicates, 2) creating ten separate lists and pulling one from each (ugh), 3) creating multiple sets of ten items and pulling a set at random using the extension. I think the third option is our best bet, but it's not really all that "random".--Hardvice (talk) 06:33, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
            • I'm updating my extension Winter to have a feature which will pull values from a set at random without repeating. :) I suggested the extension to the Admin already on his talk page and was going to say something in the admin portal once I made the update. :) --Frantik (Talk) 07:19, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
            • ...or, we could just leave one list of items, and change it every so often--nothing random, nothing to worry about. It'd be cool to have random stuff, but not necessary. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:46, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
              • You could always use the parsing functions to make sure the element in the list isn't already listed. I'm not too familiar with MediaWiki's coding structure, but I've seen references to if statements, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do. Once I'm done with my midterm on Friday (or even for spring break) I can probably pick up on the syntax and write something up (though I'm not sure where it's put on a php page, but it could be the algorithm that checks the list to see if it exists).--Bob 21:07, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
                • Unfortunately, Mediawiki creates the page all in one, not line-by-line, so at the time you'd need to test to see if an item has been randomly written to the page, it hasn't been yet. I think Frantik's extension is the way to go, since it has a straight-up random number generator. As an added benefit, it supports while loops, which might let us automate the portal subpages from a master page (have page 1 grab links 1 through 15, page 2 grab links 16 through 30, etc.) which would make updating them much easier.--Hardvice (talk) 02:45, 14 March 2007 (EDT)
  • How you like them apples? --Frantik (Talk) 04:23, 18 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Hey, not too bad! Pretty cool ... can we incorporate that here? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:04, 18 March 2007 (EDT)
      • :) It's possible to incorporate here once i finish up my latest version of Winter Hopefully I'll make it available later this evening if I have the time --Frantik (Talk) 15:38, 18 March 2007 (EDT)
        • LOL I finally ended up releasing another version of Winter.. I added lots of cool features besides the random item picker. Anyways if you admins want to add it to the site go for it I'll be happy to help with any code you're trying to write - Winter --Frantik (Talk) 00:52, 17 August 2007 (EDT)
  • What happened to this? It seemed like a really good idea to have the ramdom triva, that way we could have as much as we wanted. Anyone know?--Skywalkerrbf 15:39, 29 August 2008 (EDT)
    • That idea hasn't been discussed for more than a year now. Ultimately, I don't know how to make it random, and I don't have enough interest in trying to figure out how to do it. If somebody else wants to, they're certainly welcome to try it out, so long as nothing is "breaking" on the main page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:45, 29 August 2008 (EDT)

Why does Zach's sexuality always cause problems?

  • "It was originally intended for Claire Bennet's friend Zach to be revealed as gay, but his storyline was later changed due to legal reasons?" Legal reasons? Really? Isn't that overstating things a bit? It wasn't even a contract issue, let alone a legal issue ... his reps just didn't like it.--Hardvice (talk) 22:39, 31 May 2007 (EDT)
    • I don't know how that snuck onto this page. Let's just remove it. I've read more talk about Zach being gay or not gay or whatever than I care to remember. RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:47, 31 May 2007 (EDT)

How can both be true?

  • Did I miss an episode where Hiro was played by someone else?

"Claire Bennet and Hiro Nakamura are the only two characters who have appeared in every episode?" and "Hayden Panettiere is the only cast member to have appeared in every episode?"

    • Yes. Hiro was played by Garrett Masuda in Company Man. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:52, 1 July 2007 (EDT)
      • Thanks! I have no recollection of that. -- DeweyQ 22:11, 1 July 2007 (EDT)
        • No problem. Check out this picture of a young Hiro playing GameBoy. (Masi Oka did not appear in Company Man, incidentally.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:22, 1 July 2007 (EDT)
          • I think we should clarify the Masi/Garrett thing because when I first read the DYK, I also told myself, how is it possible? We need to find a way to make it more easily understundable. Exept reading this comment, I really don't know how a normal user can understand thoose two lines. :) (I didn't myself and I claim to have a good knowledge about all the Heroes related stuff) --  (talk) 07:57, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
            • As it is, they're both true statements. I wouldn't mind some clarification, but I don't know how it would be worded without being unnecessarily long, cumbersome, or getting away from the quick "did you know" vibe of all the other tidbits. The explanation that Masi Oka was not in Company Man is included as a comment (which I'll expand right now to include info about Garrett Masuda). Do you have a suggestion of another way to word it? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:01, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
              • Hehe no that's usually the part where you start helping me! :) With my tiny english skills I was thinking "Hum, I won't find a way to say it with five or six word"; but it seems you didn't either. The problem as you said is to keep the DYK spirit, with short sentence. The only thing we could do is create a new line under the Hayden's one with something like "...because Garrett played Hiro in Company Man". --  (talk) 08:10, 10 August 2007 (EDT)

Noah appears in every episode.

He does, doesn't he?Jason Garrick 23:04, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

  • No, he does not. --Bob 13:10, 6 October 2007 (EDT)
  • He was not in Nothing to Hide. However, he has been in every episode since he was made a series regular. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:46, 6 October 2007 (EDT)

Hiro appears in every episode

I'm pretty sure he does (a young, non-Masi Hiro counts). Also, it may be a technicality, but only the Future Claire appears in "Five Years Gone." It is correct, I believe, that Hayden Panettiere is the only actress to appear in every episode, but that's a different statement..--Tim Thomason 00:36, 16 October 2007 (EDT)

Up until TKOS, I mean.--Tim Thomason 00:39, 16 October 2007 (EDT)
Yeah, he was removed from the DYK after the episode aired tonight. He was on there before tonite. (Admin 00:40, 16 October 2007 (EDT))

David Anders as a regular?

  • Is there a source for this? He's still credited as a guest star as of Kindred.--Hardvice (talk) 14:57, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I've only seen him say it in interviews (most notably in an Entertainment Weekly making-of video). I don't think he uses the word regular the same way that we do. He is more "regular" than just the three original episodes for which he was scheduled, but not "regular" in the sense that he is billed the same way as Greg Grunberg or Masi Oka (or James Kyson Lee after his promotion). Until (or unless) we hear differently, he should not be treated as a series regular. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:08, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
      • I think people are getting confused because wikipedia says Dania Ramirez, Dana Davis and David Anders are the three new cast regulars. And of course James and Zach.
        • It's terminology. Sure, he "regularly" appears, but that's not the same as being a Series Regular. Even more confusing, NBCUMV.com lists him as a series regular in the episode blurbs...but then again, that site frequently gets facts wrong. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:50, 18 October 2007 (EDT)

G4

G4 just called and they want me to send them a bunch of random trivia that will air on Saturday between episodes. The trivia should be along the lines of what we have on this page. Anything about anything. I'm sending the email in the next half hour or so. If you have anything you'd like me to send, go ahead and leave a message on my talk page. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:02, 30 October 2007 (EDT)

Trimming

This page is getting a little out of hand...It's really large and it's taking up a much larger chunk on the main page on my browser than it needs to, and I have a higher res computer than many. Plus, a large percentage of the trivia is about the actors and roles they've played in other movies, which really begins to get away from the world of Heroes and a bit more into trivia about movies in general. For the time being, I've hidden all the out-of-world trivia and stuck just with in-world trivia. I'm not saying that actor trivia isn't allowed (in fact, the trivia about Angela isn't really in-world), but if there's too much actor trivia, it makes the casual reader think that that's all we're focusing on there, and it encourages more of the same. There's so much cool trivia about the characters that we're overlooking that I think we could focus a bit more on in-world trivia. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:48, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

  • Thanks for doing that. I always wanted to trim it down, but didn't know how to be objective about it. I like the distinction of just in-world trivia. The actor's trivia should go on the actor's page if it isn't there already. Aside from that, I think in-world trivia should only be featured on this article.--Bob (talk) 14:53, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
    • Yeah, it's not that out-of-world trivia is bad, it was just getting out of hand. Plus, there's so many cool things about these characters that we don't feature, and this place is the perfect place to do that, I think. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:58, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Deletion?

  • Was anyone suggesting this actually be removed from the main page or just that it be trimmed down and filled with useful information instead? I wouldn't want to see this go, it's great information for the main page and I think it's useful for people looking for interesting Heroes trivia (like G4 asked for for The Post Show). (Admin 00:13, 29 September 2008 (EDT))
  • my bad. I should have brought it up at Talk:Main Page. At any rate, I don't think the DYK is at all useful, and nothing about the world of Heroes is learnable from it. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:50, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
    • I disagree. It's been very useful already and I provided one example we already know in which it was used. It's intended purpose is to primarily to look at an aggregate of our articles and extrapolate metafacts based on them in order to present interesting facts about the show that otherwise might not be noticed. It's also a place for a few particularly interesting tidbits of information that may not be widely known, yet still interesting. If by "the world of Heroes" you're referring to in-world information then, yes, currently the facts in it don't generally present new in-world information, but this site is definitely not limited to in-world information so there'd be no reason to limit the DYK to that information. The purpose is to intrigue people with facts they did not know already and then to provide them links to articles which expand on them. (Admin 02:49, 29 September 2008 (EDT))
      • There's nothing wrong with having the discussion here--just don't be surprised if not everyone agrees with you! :) Admin, you bring up some excellent points...and one of the other reasons I think it's a good template to keep is simply for advertising: the main page gets so many more hits (currently 4,820,026) than any other page (the next most frequented page currently has 520,088 hits), and it's the one place that every new user visits. I think it's good to allow new users to be drawn in by an interesting fact that might get them reading more and eventually get hooked. I saw the idea on another wiki for another TV show that I'm not a big fan of but that I've seen--well, I started reading a couple of trivia tidbits, and I ended up spending about an hour just browsing a wiki about a show that I didn't think I was very interested in, but ended up surprised at how nuanced the show really was! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:32, 29 September 2008 (EDT)
        • I like having the DYK bar on the main page, but it isn't really such a big deal for me. As far as I'm concerned, it's biggest pro is of graphic nature; since the main page is in two columns, having the DYK bar, which is easily altered in height, the main page gets a better layout. vandalism?

Is Jack really related to Benjamin Franklin in real life, or is this some noob vandalism crap? TheEvilNoob 17:02, 19 October 2008 (EDT)

  • It's legit. (Admin 17:05, 19 October 2008 (EDT))

Nathan's near-death experiences

  • Is it okay if I add that Nathan had near-death experience in each finale of the previously shown volumes.

Genesis - Peter's explosion. Generations - shot by Peter. Villains - Pinehearst explosion.

An, hey, He also elways end up being saved by Peter. --NiveKJ13 (talk2me) 19:12, 11 January 2009 (EST)

Adam Monroe has two children

Should it read "Adam Monroe had two children", considering they're long dead? Revengeance 12:20, 12 January 2009 (EST)

  • Oh, looks like somebody went ahead and changed it. Just thought I'd ask and get another opinion first, in case it was fine the way it was. Revengeance 02:28, 18 January 2009 (EST)

Note-Worthy??

I thought I should run this over with you all before just adding it myself, but do you guys think it's noteworthy to add that Jessalyn Gilsig (Meredith) and Jayma Mays (Charlie) both have star-roles in that show Glee?--Anthony Gooch 21:18, 23 September 2009 (EDT)

  • As noteworthy as some of the other "these actors were in this movie together" trivia bits that are already on the page. Personally, I've never been crazy about trivia that notes that two cast members were both cast members were also in another show. However, Glee is one of my favorite new shows, so I definitely won't change it. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:04, 23 September 2009 (EDT)
