Caleb was initially granted his power by the formula, but it was corrected or stabilized somehow. |

+ When Caleb's ability activated, he exhibited physical mutations (the spider legs) and a frenzied mindset - both of which were exhibited by two others exposed to the uncatalyzed formula (Mohinder Suresh and David Sullivan, respectively). Afterwards, he apologized for having "lost control".
- - There are other evolved humans who alter their bodies - Danny Pine, Leona Mills, Perrin Crocker...
- + Danny Pine changed the composition of his body (from flesh to metal), not the fundamental shape of it. Leona Mills only changed her age, nothing else.
+ The only other abilities which caused their users to exhibit distinctly inhuman traits (Mohinder's ability, the elephant man's ability, and David's ability) were all granted by the uncatalyzed formula.
- - All of those had constant and visible appearance mutations; Caleb's didn't.
- • Hence the part of the theory "but it was corrected or stabilized somehow".
- - Mohinder's scales and slime were gone when he was exposed to the complete formula.
- + If a healer used their ability to try and help someone who has been injected with the incomplete formula, it might theoretically produce a 'middle ground' ability - not quite what they would get with the complete formula, but less dangerous than the original ability.
- - If it were so easy, Mohinder wouldn't have needed the Catalyst to cure himself and his test subjects. And Arthur could find and assign a healer in the blink of an eye.
- + But then Arthur wouldn't have Mohinder at his beck and call.
- - Brendan Lewis was able to make himself look like a plant and exhibit many plant-like qualities, but his power appeared to be natural.
- + Brendan's ability, while bizarre, was under his control. Using it did not cause any significant changes in his behavior. Caleb turned into a ravening, misshapen aberration whenever his ability activated (a symptom which has so far only been exhibited by people injected with uncatalyzed formula).
- - Caleb could have recently developed his ability, still lacking control over it.
- + If Caleb had spent any amount of time with the Carnival, he would definitely have received 'ability training'.
- + In the iStories, Caleb is mentioned as being Samuel's toady. This implies that he had spent a considerable amount of time in the Carnival.
- - While mimicking a spider his mind may have followed suit, resulting in uncontrolled behavior.
- + Spiders do not exhibit the sort of mindless, reckless rage which Caleb demonstrated when he 'lost control'.
- The formula wasn't a widely available item and there is no evidence which suggests that Caleb had an encounter with the Company.
- + Caleb may have been used as a test subject for an early batch of the formula.
