Story

Insurance, it was never something I considered to be necessary but if we’re going to do this legitimately then we need to do everything by the book. There was an insurance firm called Fletcher & Son just a few blocks from our apartment. Susan and I set out to enquire about setting up a policy. It seemed such a menial thing to be doing but if it’s what’s needed then it needs to be done. Angela had had a dream the night before; we were going to meet another evolved human here, another addition to the group. We entered the building and headed straight for the secretary’s desk. It was a wide, open lobby with flowers in the centre of the room.

“Harry Fletcher’s office please.” – Angela

“Right this way, room 103.” – Secretary

"Thank you.” – Angela

Angela knocked on the door and within seconds it swung open.

“Hi, I’m Harry Fletcher, please come in.” – Harry

“Thank you.” - Susan

Angela and Susan entered the room and sat down opposite Harry.

“Now, call it a hunch but I have a feeling that you two are here for more than just insurance, am I right?” – Harry

“Wow Angie, he’s good!” – Susan

“I am good, I’m damn good! So what are you after?” – Harry

“We’re forming a company to help and protect people like us.” – Angela

“Hmm, a noble cause, what do you need me to do?” – Harry

“Become a member.” – Angela

The room fell silent for a moment as Harry stood up and began pacing. He stopped and stared out of the window for a moment then turned back to face the girls.

“I’m sorry but I can’t commit to something like that, I already have a commitment here, to the business, to my father. I do apologise but I can’t help you.” – Harry

“This is so much more than just a business, please reconsider.” – Angela

“I’m sorry I can’t, I think its best if you leave now.” – Harry

“Fine, you’re the one who’ll regret it!” – Susan

Susan and Angela stormed out of the room and headed for the lift. Harry stood staring out of the window. A man entered the room; he had suspicious look on his face.

“What did they want?” – Michael

“They offered me an opportunity, the chance of a lifetime” – Harry

“And I hope you turned it down son, you know your place is here with me.” – Michael

“I know father but I just……” – Harry

“You don’t just anything! I am your father and you will do as I tell you do you hear me!” – Michael

As he said this, he raised his hand and hit Harry across the face.

“Now get back to work!” – Michael

Harry stood there, shocked for a moment then he realised; I’m better than this, I can be somebody. Harry stood and faced his father and uttered the words……No….. He turned and sped out of the room as fast as lightning.

“Harry!!!!” – Michael

Outside the Fletcher building, Susan and Angela were walking away when a man suddenly appeared beside them.

“Hi, is that offer still available?” – Harry

“It sure is.” – Angela

“Welcome aboard!” – Susan

Harry turned and took one last look at the Fletcher building. Susan and Angela each placed and arm over his shoulder and the three of them began walking away.
