Timeframe
Story
High school. They say it’s meant to be the best years of your life. For me, they seemed like the worst. I was the outcast; a geek, a loser. Being a nobody was part of my daily life. My story begins on what seemed like an ordinary day. It was the same old routine; wake up, get dressed and go to school. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. That was until I began my walk home from school. I decided to take a shortcut through the backstreets. As I made my way down the alleyway I came across a gang of youths. They noticed me within seconds.
“Hey Bishop, where do you think you're going?”
“I’m just on my way home.”
“No you're not, give us your money!”
“I don’t have any.”
“Give it to us now.”
One of the youths reached out and tried to grab my arm. I stepped back and slipped; I fell and hit the wall. They began circling around me like vultures preparing to feast on a dead body. Suddenly I heard a voice in the distance.

“Get out of here!”
“Crap! Guys let’s get out of here”
……
“You know, you shouldn’t let people push you around like that”
“Huh, there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m just a loser”
“Clearly not.”
“What do you mean?”
“Take a look.”
I turned around, and I saw it. lying beside me was a can made of shimmering gold. I sat there for a moment, bewildered. What had just happened? Had I turned a simple aluminium can into gold or were my eyes playing tricks on me?. I sat there silently with my thoughts.
“What the hell, you’re saying I did that? You’re saying I turned a can into gold?”
“No, I think someone just threw it away. Of course you did it!”
“But, how, I don’t understand?”
“You’re not normal. You’re special!”
“What do you mean "special"? Are you special too?”
“I am, but not like you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I can’t turn things into gold. I’m just stronger than normal people. Well, much stronger actually”
“Wow, cool.”
“Yeah. Anyway, I have to get going. Good luck, I’m sure we’ll meet again soon”
“Wait! You can’t go. I need to know more, take me with you”
“We all have our paths to follow, and I’m afraid yours is not with me, but good luck”
As he began to walk away I felt a surge of inner strength. I felt like my life had some real meaning at last. Finally I could see potential. Potential to do great things. I’m a man; the man with the Midas touch.
