Story
“Anything yet?” a voice asks.
“Nothing. Seems to be quiet, maybe I was wrong,” says another voice over a radio.
“Something is going to happen, you can feel it in the air,” says the first voice.
“I don’t know Ethan, it seems like everything is difficult to predict anymore, even with all the information in front of me,” said the voice over the radio.
“Nonsense Micah,” said Ethan, “You’re more powerful than all the internets.” Both of them laughed.
“You don’t think you’re exaggerating a little bit?” asked Micah.
“Nonsense!” said Ethan.
“Hold on,” Micah interrupted, “There’s an alert, a bank robbery involving specials. The authorities have been notified but they haven’t arrived yet.”
“I’ll move in there and pacify the situation,” said Ethan.
“You better be quick, they aren’t going to be any happier to see you there than those criminals,” said Micah.
“Everybody down,” yelled a spiky haired criminal. As he yelled, a wave of force knocked people down and threw furniture back away from him.
A big criminal lifted a desk with one hand, “Everyone cooperate and nobody has to get hurt.”
A third, confident criminal approached the teller counter.
“They’re freaks, Fiona,” one of the tellers said, “I don’t want to die.”
“Nobody is going to die, Sara,” said Fiona, “They’re just like all criminals; if we give them what they want, they’ll go away.”
The confident criminal approached Fiona, “We’ll be taking everything,” he said. He threw Fiona a bag, “Don’t even think about putting any of those ink packs in there.” Fiona took the bag and started putting the money into it. Bank robberies by specials had become almost commonplace these days and she wasn’t even surprised, or afraid. She felt like it was only a matter of time before someone robbed the bank where she worked.
“What do you think you’re doing?” said the confident criminal. Fiona turned around to see that the confident criminal had caught Sara trying to trigger the alarm. “Very naughty,” he said.
“We told you as long as everyone cooperated nobody had to get hurt,” he said, “But you had to call our bluff.” He held out his hands dramatically, the other criminals were smiling and laughing. “I’ll let you choose, barbeque,” he said summoning a flame in one hand, “Or ice cream,” he said making his other hand frozen.
Fiona didn’t know what to do. This guy was going to hurt her friend if she didn’t do anything. She was powerless, she wanted to help but these guys were too powerful. They could do whatever they wanted. All she could do was reach out her hands and yell, “Leave her alone!” As she did, a ray of bright energy erupted from her fingers and struck the confident criminal knocking him several feet backwards and burning his shirt. Fiona looked down at her hands, what had she done?
“She’s a special,” yelled the big criminal, “Get her!” He threw the desk that he had been holding at Fiona. She saw it flying through the air at her but she didn’t know what to do. All she could do was hold up her hands and close her eyes. A moment passed and Fiona suddenly realized that she hadn’t been squashed. She opened her eyes to see the desk floating in the air just in front of her. It dropped to the ground.
“Did she do that?” said the spiky haired criminal. Good question, thought Fiona. This was all new to her.
“No,” said a voice, “I did.” It was Ethan. As he came through the front doors, he waved his hand and telekinetically threw the big criminal back into the wall behind him. The spiky haired criminal started to yell at him but Ethan made a choking gesture and telekinetically closed his throat. “I’ve dealt with ones like you before,” said Ethan as he flung the spiky haired criminal into a support pillar, knocking him out, “Not so tough when you can’t talk, like a politician.”
The big criminal shook himself off and faced Ethan. As he did, he changed his entire body to metal.
“Now that’s a new one,” said Ethan.
“I’d like to see you throw me again!” said the big criminal. Ethan pointed to two metal filing cabinets on either side of the big criminal and brought his hands together, sandwiching the big criminal between them. His new metal body was extremely durable however and the file cabinets just folded around him. “Tisk, tisk,” he said.
The big criminal rushed at Ethan to attempt to hit him with his metal arms. Every swing he took at Ethan, Ethan easily dodged, like the criminal was moving in slow motion. However, it appeared that there was no way that Ethan could fight back.
“You can’t stop me,” said the big criminal.
“You’re right,” said Ethan, quickly grabbing the big criminal’s hand, “Let’s shake hands!” Ethan surged a massive amount of electricity through the big criminal, his metal body conducting the voltage through his system. The big criminal staggered backwards, slowly turning back to normal before he dropped to the ground. “Whoops,” said Ethan, “Forgot I was still wearing my joy buzzer!”
Ethan turned around to find a large icicle coming straight for him. He telekinetically stopped it in mid-air before it could reach him. The confident criminal had come to. He reached out and shot a jet of fire at Ethan which Ethan had to duck to the side to avoid.
“You’ve got some skills,” said the confident criminal, “You’d make a good one of us.”
“One of who?” said Ethan, “Incompetent criminals? I’ve had more trouble with regular humans than you guys.”
“You must be kidding,” said the confident criminal, “Humans are nothing without their weapons and their technology. We are gods amongst men.”
“Oh great, you have a god complex too? You’re like a walking stereotype!” said Ethan.
“Look at the great myths of our time, the gods had the power to control the elements, to force the regulars to do their will. I am simply exercising my right as a god.”
“And I’m exercising this!” said Ethan as he threw a large desk at the confident criminal. The criminal burned the desk rendering it harmless as Ethan leapt like Superman through the air, turning to metal as he did. The confident criminal sent a jet of flame at Ethan but since Ethan was metal it didn’t burn him. He hit the confident criminal with one of his now metal arms and knocked him out completely. He looked around triumphantly, “All too easy,” he said, returning to normal.
As he looked around more, he could see all of the people in the bank were just as afraid of him as they were of the criminals.
“Stay back,” yelled one of the customers.
“You’re a demon!” yelled another.
“I did just save your lives, you could show a little bit more gratitude,” said Ethan. He could see the authorities pulling up in front of the bank. Fiona grabbed his arm.
“Please, you have to take me with you,” she said.
“What? Why?” Ethan asked.
“These people all saw what I did, those police will lock me up and throw away the key,” said Fiona.
“You have a power?” asked Ethan. He had not seen Fiona use her power as he had arrived afterwards.
“I guess, it just showed up today,” said Fiona.
“Come out with your hands up!” yelled a police officer over a loud speaker.
“You have to stay close, things could get messy,” said Ethan, “But nobody gets killed.”
They ran out of the bank together, “Hold it right there,” said one of the officers.
“I’m afraid you guys just wouldn’t understand,” said Ethan.
“He’s one of them, open fire,” said the officer. They fired multiple shots at Ethan and Fiona. Fiona screamed and turned away but Ethan held out his hand and stopped all of the bullets in mid air. The officers stopped firing, stunned.
“Gotta go!” said Ethan and he telekinetically flipped one of their cars on its side, blocking them from following. He grabbed Fiona’s hand, “We need to run!”
They sprinted down the street, the officers following a ways back. Simply running wasn’t going to be enough to get away. Ethan activated his radio, “They’re pursing me Micah, anything you can do?”
“I’ll jam their communications so that they can’t call help to follow you but you’re going to have to find a place to hide for a while,” said Micah over the radio. Ethan ran a bit further down the street until he saw a short building.
“Here we go,” he said. He grabbed Fiona and jumped to the top of the building. Once on top of the building, he noticed a helicopter had joined the pursuit. “Wonderful,” he said.
He jumped down the other side and ran down the street a short distance. As the helicopter moved in closer, he telekinetically grabbed a mailbox and threw it at the helicopter. He missed, but it was close enough to make them change course and stop pursuit for a moment.
“You missed them,” said Fiona.
“Who said I missed?” said Ethan as he noticed more officers coming, “Let’s go.” They ran further and turned down an alley. It was a dead end and the building was too high for Ethan to jump to the top.
“It looks like I’m going to have to face them,” said Ethan, as he conjured two ball lightnings in his hand.
“There has to be another way,” said Fiona, grabbing his arm. The officers came around the corner but stopped.
“They aren’t here,” said one.
“They must have jumped this one too, come on,” said another. Ethan was confused, how could they not see him and the girl? All of the officers left, and the pursuit went cold leaving Ethan and Fiona in the clear. Micah came over the radio.
“That was one heck of a trick Ethan,” said Micah, “I didn’t know you had picked up an invisibility power.”
“I didn’t,” he said, looking at Fiona, “I think it was her.”
“Me? But I don’t even know how to turn invisible,” she said.
“Whatever happened,” Micah said, “They think you’re long gone.”
Ethan walked over to a nearby vehicle and telekinetically unlocked the doors. “Coming?” he asked Fiona. She climbed in and he manipulated the electronics of the car to hotwire it and they headed out of the city.
“Hello?” said Sara.
“Hi, it’s me. Are you okay?” said Fiona over the phone.
“Great thanks to you. Where are you?” asked Sara.
“I have to go away for a while; I have one of those dangerous powers you hear about on the news.”
“Well, I don’t care if they call you a freak, you’ll always be my friend and I owe you one.”
“Friends forever?”
“Forever.”
