Among the Characters in Heroes, there are some whom I believe central to the show in one form or another. I think of them as the major characters, and they follow in this page.

I further classify them as is shown in the Table of Contents.

Core Characters

These characters I deem the core characters because they have been billed as the "Main Characters" since Season One and have had a significant role in the plot of each volume. How is explained below;

Claire Bennet

Ability: Regeneration
  • Volume One -- Her adjustment to her ability was a focal point of the volume; was the subject of the message, another focal point of the volume; was asked by Peter (the bomb) to kill him
  • Volume Two -- Her adapting to life in hiding was a focal point of the volume; Her blood helped keep Noah (her adopted father) and Maya alive and cured Sylar
  • Volume Three -- Her quest not to be helpless was a focal point of the volume; was instrumental in saving Noah and Angela from the wrath of Sylar by incapacitating him
  • Volume Four -- Her status as a fugitive hunted by Building 26, and then as an aid in Rebel's plans to help fellow fugitives were a focal point of the volume

Noah Bennet

Ability: None
  • Volume One -- Initially he was a member of the Company and saw evolved humans as animals. However he came upon a major revalation during the volume, his own adopted daughter, Claire, was one. Noah's subsequent quest to protect Claire from the Company by shutting it down and reaching out to evolved humans to do so was a focal point in the volume.
  • Volume Two -- His continued quest to protect Claire and his family from the Company, which survived his actions, was a focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Three -- His quest to capture the evolved human criminals in Level 5 was a focal point of the volume. He was also the one to help Claire in her quest to not be helpless.
  • Volume Four -- His status as a double agent in Danko's team was a focal point in the volume.

Hiro Nakamura

Ability: Spacetime manipulation
Lost between Vols. 3 and 4, but incrementally restored since, albeit with less control
  • Volume One -- Was on a quest to stop the bomb (Peter)
  • Volume Two -- His interaction with Adam, the person responsible for the Outbreak Future was a focal point of the volume
  • Volume Three -- Accidentally let the formula out, and his quest to right the situation and destroy the was a focal point of the volume
  • Volume Four -- His status as a fugitive, his reaction to being without his ability for a time, and the changed dynamic between himself and Ando were were focal points of the volume.

Matt Parkman

Abilities: Telepathy (Advanced, Known effects: Mind-reading/thought projection, Nightmare Coma induction, Persuasion & Illusion), Precognition 1
1 Not officially recognized by the wiki as an ability of his, rather a by-product of Telepathy. I however consider it such.

Nathan Petrelli

Ability: Flight
  • Volume One -- His campaign was a focal point of the volume; Flew the Peter (the bomb) to where he would do no damage
  • Volume Two -- Helped persuade Peter that Adam was misleading him
  • Volume Three -- Wanted to promote the use of the formula
  • Volume Four -- His hypocritical campaign, compromised by himself revealing his ability and subsequently taken over by Danko, to capture all evolved humans to protect the world was a focal point of the volume.

Peter Petrelli

Ability:
Initial; Empathic mimicry, enabling access to multiple abilites
Current; Ability replication, currently enabling access to Terrakinesis
  • Volume One -- Was the bomb, to his own dismay
  • Volume Two -- Was an unknowing accomplice in Adam's plot to release Strain 138, but, fortunately, wound up destroying it.
  • Volume Three -- Was instrumental in destroying the formula, despite loosing his original ability.
  • Volume Four -- His status as a fugitive, and quest to stop his brother, Nathan, and his reaction to a newly acquired ability were focal points of the volume .

Mohinder Suresh

Ability:
Initial: None
Current: Enhanced strength
  • Volume One -- His quest to continue his father's research on abilities and understand them and discover what killed his sister was another focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Two -- His thirst for knowledge about the Shanti virus was one of the focal points of the volume
  • Volume Three -- His resumed quest for knowledge about abilities lead to research on artificially induced ones, and some self-inflicted anguish along the way.
  • Volume Four -- With his mutations cured and a new power the only vestiges of his experimentation, His status as a fugitive and aiding in Peter's rebellion against Nathan were focal points of the volume.

Sylar

Ability: Intuitive aptitude, enabling the acquisition of multiple abilities
  • Volume One -- His hunger to acquire abilities was one of the focal points of the volume; he was also thought to be the bomb.
  • Volume Two -- His quest to cure his ability loss, unknown to him caused by Shanti virus infection and the Company's hand, was another focal point of the volume
  • Volume Three -- His entertaining the idea of being a good guy, the rejecting it, was another focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Four -- His quest to find information on his origins, resumed quest for abilities, and further ambitions to become president. were focal points of the volume.

Other Main Characters

The following characters have been billed as "main characters." They are not core characters for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. They have been killed off (in which case they are listed in Italics )
  2. They were introduced in a later volume than Volume One
  3. They were unseen in or were not significant enough to the plot of volumes subsequent to their introduction.

Ando Masahashi

Ability:
Initial: None
Current: Ability supercharging
  • Volume One -- Officially not a main character, he is Hiro's best friend and was his constant companion during his quests during this volume.
  • Volume Two -- Officially a Main character this volume, he anxiously awaited Hiro's return from 1671, reading messages hidden in the Kensei sword. When Hiro returned, Ando helped Hiro find the information he needed to stop Adam
  • Volume Three -- Helped Hiro on his quest to right what he had wronged, gaining an ability to rescue Hiro when he became powerless and trapped in 1990.
  • Volume Four -- His reaction to having an ability, his quest to save Hiro form Building 26, and the changed dynamic between himself and Hiro were were focal points of the volume.

Angela Petrelli

Ability: Precognitive dreaming
  • Volume One -- A recurring character this volume, she was an accomplice in Linderman's plan to rig Nathan's election.
  • Volume Two -- A reccuring character this volume, she was a target of Adam and was revieled to be a Company Founder
  • Volume Three -- Officially a main character as of this volume, she became the Chairperson of the Company and the head of it's resistance against Pinehearst and Arthur's plan to market the formula
  • Volume Four -- Her status as a fugitive and assistance to Peter (and later Nathan) while during his fight against Danko's team and Sylar were key parts of the plot of this volume

Micah Sanders

Ability: Technopathy
  • Volume One -- His child-like innocence and his immediate embracement of his ability were a focal point of the volume. He was also a cog in a plot to rig an election so that Nathan would win.
  • Volume Two -- His acclimation to life in New Orleans and his helping of Monica embrace her own ability were focal points of the volume.
  • Volume Three -- A minor character this volume, he helped his new found biological aunt (a triplet of his mother), Tracy, find answers about her life.
  • Volume Four -- His work as part of Rebel working against Building 26 and Danko's team were focal points of the volume.

Simone Deveaux

Ability: None
  • Volume One -- Her disbelief that abilities could exist as well as the love triangle between her, Isaac, and Peter was a focal point of the volume. She died in this volume.

D.L. Hawkins

Ability: Phasing
  • Volume One -- His quest to re-assimilate after escaping from prison after being framed for crimes, confronmting the framer, and struggle to parent his son, Micah, during Niki's incarceration were focal points fo the volume
  • Volume Two -- A minor character in this volume, he became a firefighter. He was killed while trying to find Niki.

Isaac Mendez

Ability: Precognition
  • Volume One -- His discovery of his ability, as well as his addiction to heroin and initial dependency on the drug to access his ability was a focal point of the volume. He died in this volume.
  • Volumes Two and Three -- Artwork of his, reveled to exist during these volumes, were recognizable focal points in these volumes.

Niki Sanders/Jessica

Ability: Enhanced strength

Elle Bishop

Ability: Lightning
  • Volume Two -- Her work as a Company agent and life as daughter of Company founder Bob Bishop was a focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Three -- Her firing at the hands of new Company chairperson, Angela, and subsequent romantic role in Sylar's reformation were focal points of the volume. She died at the hands of Sylar in this volume.

Adam Monroe

Ability: Regeneration
  • Volume Two -- His introduction in 1671 as Kensei and later quest in the present to release Strain 138 were focal points of the volume. He was jailed by Hiro in a coffin underground.
  • Volume Three -- A minor character this volume, he was released by Hiro, only to be abducted from Hiro's custody and loose his ability and life at the hands of Arthur Petrelli.

Monica Dawson

Ability: Adoptive muscle memory
  • Volume Two -- Her struggle with her new found ability and what to do with it was a focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Four -- While not a character involved in the Episodes, she is the subject of Rebel's quest in the Rebellion GN.

Maya Herrera

Ability:
Initial: Poison emission
Current: None
  • Volume Two -- Her discovery of her ability and subsequent quest to find the (not known to her) late Chandra Suresh for answers and a cure to get rid of her ability was a focal point of the volume.
  • Volume Three -- A minor character this volume, her life with Mohinder and her further quest to get rid of her ability were a focal point of the volume.

Tracy Strauss

Abilities: Freezing, Water Mimicry 2
  • Volume Three -- Her discovery of her ability and her roll as a political figure, aid to Nathan, and facilitator in Arthur's plan to market the formula were focal points in the volume.
  • Volume Four -- A more minor character in this volume, her life as a fugitive and apparent sacrifice as a double agent in Nathan and Danko's plan to lock up all evolved humans were focal points of the volume.
2 Not officially recognized by the wiki as an ability of hers, rather a development due to trauma sustained in Cold Snap. I however consider it such.

Recurring Characters of Great Significance

The folowing characters have never been main characters. They are of great significance for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. They have been present in most of the volumes.
  2. They were at the center of what the Main characters were fighting against
  3. They have played a major part in a main character's lives or plans

Ability: None
  • Volume One -- Husband of Noah for over 20 years, only becoming aware of his real job this volume.
  • Volume Two -- Supported Noah's anti-Company actions and those to protect Claire.
  • Volume Three -- Tries to be a voice of thoughtful reason to Claire's impulsiveness.
  • Volume Four -- Learns of Noah's new job, which ends their marriage

René, AKA "The Haitian"

Ability: Mental manipulation
  • Volume One -- Was Noah's Company partner and also worked for Angela. His ability was also notable among the number of abilities introduced this first volume
  • Volume Two -- After contracting and being cured of the Shanti virus, Aided Noah in his anti-Company activities.
  • Volume Three -- Returned to work as a company agent.

Eric Doyle

Kaito Nakamura

Ability: None
  • Volume One -- Hiro's Father, monitored him on his journey across America, later helped him complete his quest and gave him advice. Was also the one to order Noah to adopt Claire
  • Volume Two -- Was a target of Adam and killed by him. Also was responsible for locking him up in 1977 for his original plot to release Strain 138. Revealed to be a Company founder.
  • Volume Three -- After his death, charged Hiro with protection of his half of the formula.

Arthur Petrelli

Ability: Power absorption, enabling multiple abilites

Meredith Gordon

Ability: Pyrokinesis
  • Volume One -- Revealed to be Claire's biological mother
  • Volume Three -- Returned to Claire's life to help protect her at Noah's behest, lived with the Bennets for a time. Died in this volume.

Daphne Millbrook

Ability: Super speed
  • Volume Three -- A thief for Pinehearst, later reformed, left Pinehearst, and became a love interest for Matt.
  • Volume Four -- Continued to be Matt's girlfriend, was captured by Danko's team (eventually died due to lack of medical treatment due to the injuries she sustained during capture) Was the reason Matt joined forces with Peter.

Volume One

Ted Sprague

Ability: Induced radioactivity
  • His struggle to control his ability and cope with its accidental and fatal effect on his wife were a focal point of the volume. He died this volume

Thompson

Ability: none
  • A high ranking Company official, was Noah's boss. Later became Noah's adversary when he went rogue, and was killed by him. Appeared in flashbacks in the Volume Five episode The Wall, was revealed to have recruited him in the first place.

Volume Two

Alejandro Herrera

Ability: The ability to counteract Poison emission
  • Twin brother to Maya, was her companion in her quest to find Chandra Suresh, until Sylar joined them and killed him.

Yaeko 3

Ability: none
  • The (in-universe) real life counterpart of the Princess in the Takezo Kensei legends, was support and chronicler for Hiro and Adam in their journeys together in their battles against Whitebeard in 1671 (which became the source material for the Kensei legends). Was a love interest of Adam, but later became the source of his cynicism when she kissed Hiro.
3 Assuming she did not later develop regeneration, she would have died of natural causes in the 1700's

Ability: None
  • Was the executor of Nathan's operation against Specials, and later took it over when he found that Nathan was a Special himself. Died shortly into Volume Five.
