DPL question

Is there a way to make a DPL page that essentially is the opposite of a category for images? For example, if I wanted to see every image that's not in Category:Images of Peter Petrelli, is there a way to make a DPL page that will have every image? I just need an example, and then I can tweak with it a bit. Thanks.

  • Yes, it can be done to an extent. Click here for an example. You're welcome.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:00, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

On my GN info table, I tried to put the Issue number column in the first column and the title in the second one. it didnt work. What'd I do went wrong? --SacValleyDweller (talk) 23:42, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

  • The DPL code you are using is set to search the Issues category, which when viewed displays a list of graphic novel titles, so that will always appear first before any included text. Also, ":number" needs to come after the text "{Graphic Novel Sidebar}" or else the "include=" statement will be broken due to it not knowing what ":number" refers to. If you want the article number first, you have to use Template:DPLSearch or something similar to do that, but it will probably tick out for now--Admin is planning to upgrade MediaWiki tonight and DPL next week so perhaps things will get better.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:14, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
    • So, I should hold off a couple weeks before trying to make the table do what I want, right?--SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:33, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
      • Well, the only way to do what you want now is to do it manually (no DPL). I'd wait a week for Admin to install the new DPL, and maybe another week to see if he's going to up the new computation variable. Then you can try yourself or remind me and I'll try and help.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:45, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
        • Hey! Um, one can we try that now? and two the table isnt working , it aint showing the latest GNs --SacValleyDweller (talk) 00:37, 14 May 2008 (EDT)
          • The new DPL isn't giving much if any improvement, and if in table mode you've reached the limit, I don't think changing the DPL would help. The rest have to be done manually for now. Alternatively, you can archive the first novels as static and change the code to start on the subsequent novel. I'll see if I can look at that tomorrow.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:44, 14 May 2008 (EDT)
            • So how would I go about making the first 80 or so static and having DPL grab the ones after that and have all that in one sortable table?--SacValleyDweller (talk) 23:37, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
    • I think you'll want to make the first 34 that came in the first issue static and in a separate collapsible/sortable table as that makes the most sense. The DPL code is going to make its own table and there's no way to daisy-chain tables together such that the sorting will work globally. To make the current code start at a later issue # than 1, you just have to add one element to the code I gave you before: "|offset=34" assuming you want to start with issue 35 (volume one is the first 34 novels). Making the static table is more straightforward. You'll need to look at how it's done with archiving (I documented that at Template:ArchiveLinks). It'll be the same deal here:

View this table as-is and copy the related HTML table source a little at a time to WikiConverter (you only need the first 34 rows). Use the "View->Source" browser command to see the raw source in HTML format. Once you have all the HTML source at the WikiConverter page, ensure the Wiki dialect of "MediaWiki" is selected and click the "Convert HTML to wiki markup" button. Then copy the output markup to the desired subpage. Finally, add the subpage using inclusion. If you have trouble implementing this, let me know where you're working on it and I'll do some of the steps.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:45, 21 May 2008 (EDT)

  • Unfortunately, I just tested and using "|offset=34" doesn't allow any extra chapters past 83 (though it does hide the first 34 chapters). So instead I think we need to use "|notlinksfrom=<subpage>" where the subpage is the static table page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:50, 21 May 2008 (EDT)

What's DPL?

OK, I have another one: What is DPL and what does it stand for?--SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:55, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

  • It stands for "Dynamic Page Listing" (a markup extension for wikis) and there is an extensive help manual for it here. I have mostly finished now a DPL help manual for Heroes Wiki that I've been writing for some time. When Admin updates the DPL on Thursday I plan to update/post it asap.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:09, 4 May 2008 (EDT)

DPL

  • Actually, I can update DPL right now pretty easily if you're interested in going through some of the different DPL pages afterwards and making sure nothing appears broken. (Admin 17:34, 1 May 2008 (EDT))
    • It's your decision, but I think the MediaWiki upgrade should be done first since the way it tracks computation size is different. If that works and the current version we have of DPL is still ok, then upgrade the DPL. Having expanded DPL features is not as important to me as the new MediaWiki features.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:42, 1 May 2008 (EDT)
      • Ok, I'll keep the DPL update scheduled for next week then. (Admin 17:44, 1 May 2008 (EDT))
        • I'll be sure to remind you then. :)--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:53, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

On the recent spoiler influx and my usage habits...

My current using habits: Come here, check recent changes, THEN login if I want to play with things and/or fix something, patrol (mostly your ;) ) stuff if I have time, hoping I don't stumble on a spoiler in the process. With this recent spoiler influx, I'd guess better login first thing nowadays to get some sort of warning keep my spoiler filters from getting more perforated. *laughs* --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:25, 10 May 2008 (EDT)

  • Miami, one way to help people avoiding spoiler info is actually to not put a summary when creating (or fixing) a redirect to a spoiler page. For instance, if you are going to update the redirect for Joy and the summary says "fix redirect", then there's no way for a spoilerphobe to know that clicking on that link will take them to a spoiler page. However, if you don't put a summary, then the summary will automatically read "Redirecting to Spoiler:Daphne", which is a lot easier to detect as a spoiler page. Just a tip. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:27, 10 May 2008 (EDT)
    • Good tip, but that wouldn't stop spoilerphobes from learning that way that the character who was supposed to be Joy is now supposed to be called Daphne. I guess I could just put "fix spoiler redirect" to be safe.--MiamiVolts (talk) 09:48, 10 May 2008 (EDT)
      • Good Idea, ryan, and you got a good point Miami. And I laugh at myself as I stumble over an update to a spoiler that I already know and didn't want to know the original spoiler in the first place while I was checking for a response to this. Oh, what a catch 22 I've put myself in XD. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:58, 11 May 2008 (EDT)

Demonstration of Nerve gas emission

I removed your afd tag....go read this explanation here: http://heroeswiki.com/Graphic_Novel_talk:Faces%2C_Part_1 The power was demonstrated (albeit it briefly and not to full fruition), in the GN...per the GN explanation of the power. Thanks! --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 05/20/2008 11:43 (EST)

  • See my reply. I'm re-added the afd so it can be discussed.--MiamiVolts (talk) 11:47, 20 May 2008 (EDT)
    • I re-replied. The GN says that when he sweats, he emits nerve gas. Not after he has sweated for a while, he eventually emits it. So Penny must have tagged him unconscious before the emission from his sweating got severe enough to kill people. It is conjecture to say it was not demonstrated, simply because the sweating demonstration was not allowed to continue until carnage insued. The GN simply says, when he sweats he emits a nerve gas. That should be enough foundation for us to credit him. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 05/20/2008 11:50 (EST)
      • Unless the ability is to write or display text, a demonstration of an ability doesn't normally care about the text--see my re-replies; there's no proof that the sweat contained nerve agent.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:16, 20 May 2008 (EDT)

Animated videos

So what should I do in the future? Therequiembellishere 15:00, 22 May 2008 (EDT)

  • Ok, I'll try to explain with an example. For instance, Trust Issues, Part 2's animated video is at "http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels/episodes.shtml#vid=252913&tin=607.000&tou=853.889&plt=lf". In the external links section of the "Graphic Novel:Trust Issues, Part 2" article, you need to only add the part after the vid= (252913&tin=607.000&tou=853.889&plt=lf) to after vid= in the template call. That's why I changed the template call to now read "{{GN|chapter=85|pages=6|vid=252913&tin=607.000&tou=853.889&plt=lf}}". Is that understandable for you?--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:54, 22 May 2008 (EDT)

Need a template made

Mr Template Wizard, I need a template for a new project. The project is User:SacValleyDweller/Company Missions I need the end result to look similar to what's there, and be as turn key as any infobox template. the preview or what have you needs to do something like this:

{{Company Mission
| Name of mission = <!--Puts title of box into the TOC-->
| image = <!--Image link-->
| outcome = <!--Entering "Failed" here will produce a red box with the word "Failed" in red,
                Entering "Half-accomplished" will produce a gray box with the word "Half-accomplished" in blue,
                Entering "Accomplished" will produce a green box with the word "Accomplished" in green-->
| date = <!-- mission date, will link to timeline-->
| normal = <!-- normal human agent(s), will link to existing articles-->
| evolved = <!-- evolved human agent(s), will link to existing articles-->
| target = <!-- OPTIONAL will link to existing articles-->
| objective = <!-- OPTIONAL -->
| details = <!-- a summary of knowns about the mission -->
}}

The net result of the project is a page similar to the pages devoted to missions over at over at Lostpedia. Could you make this, please?--SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:41, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

  • Ok. I'll add it to my to-do list. Trying to finish writing the interview I'm helping Ryan with is priority for next couple days or so. Sorry about taking so long.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:01, 4 June 2008 (EDT)
    • Thanks, Miami! I think Sac is more anxious for the RD interview than anybody else, so I don't think you'll get any opposition! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:16, 4 June 2008 (EDT)
      • Ok, do you want the word for the outcome to change color, or do you want the outcome word to be the color...I'm guessing the former, but your grammar indicates otherwise.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:18, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
        • OK, does the above rephrasing clear it up? --SacValleyDweller (talk) 03:05, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
          • I see what you are doing, very nice so far! However on your addition of "Pending" (thanks for thinking of it!) I'd like that to be a purple box with purple "Pending" --SacValleyDweller (talk) 20:48, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
            • Ok, check now. I've added a TOC as well.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:18, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
              • OK, I'll probably play with it tomorrow or later tonight and see if there are any problems with anything. I'll let you know. Thanks again! --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:35, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
                • initial tinkering report: Pending has bugs, see my sandbox. I'd also like the image part of the template to be optional,as an image does not necessarily go with an off screen mission. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:23, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
                  • Bugs should be fixed now and the image is now optional. Let me know if the purple background isn't bright enough.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:41, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
                    • Actually, the background color is too bold. I'd like the color of the text to be your standard issue purple, not the pink that it is now, and the background to be a much paler variant of the same color. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:55, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
                      • Ok, changed again. That's as good as I think I can get it. Feel free to play with the color codes yourself.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:06, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
                        • Alright, looking at the code I should be able to alter it pretty easily to the way I want it. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 23:35, 10 June 2008 (EDT)

Stickey "Y" key, eh?

You need a new keyboard, man! ;P --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:00, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

  • I have a newer keyboard, but I haven't figured out how to configure my computer to recognize it yet. Maybe I'll figure it out one day. This one works well enough, for now. ;P--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:15, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

Hall interview

Many thanks to you, too. Therequiembellishere 06:39, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

GN Checklist

Hey Miami, sorry I did check the recent changes but didn't notice it had been unmarked and just thought I had forgotten to do so before - I thought since instant messaging has an article about R&B2, it should be marked. Should items only be marked then once they have an image on the specified page? (Friskymuffin - (talk) 16:23, 10 June 2008 (EDT))

  • That depends on whether the article has a gallery. If it has a gallery, you need to check if there's an image of it there for the current novel along with the text entry. If there's no gallery, it just needs the text entry. Heh, sorry if I was abrupt but I think I've had to unmark it like three times...--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:31, 10 June 2008 (EDT)
    • No worries, my bad, it's sorted now at least ;) thanks for the notice though, I like to know where I can improve my wiki editing skills! (Friskymuffin - (talk) 17:09, 10 June 2008 (EDT))

R.D. Hall interview

  • Do you know if Bob or Ryan transcribed the first half of the interview? (Admin 01:28, 12 June 2008 (EDT))
    • I transcribed the second half. Ryan said Bob was still working on the first half as of yesterday. What happened after that, I don't know.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:33, 12 June 2008 (EDT)
    • Thanks for the credits.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:40, 12 June 2008 (EDT)
      • It seems fair to credit those involved in the production of the interview itself. :) (Admin 01:50, 12 June 2008 (EDT))

Editing picture links

Thank you for fixing those picture links. I knew there was another way to do what I was trying to do, but my mind was drawing a blank. I'm basically learning to edit as I go along based on what others have done before me. Sorry about that. I appreciate the help. --Dman176 03:21, 26 June 2008 (EDT)

  • You're welcome. It is mentioned in Help:Editing, but I understand not being able to grasp everything at once.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:24, 26 June 2008 (EDT)
