The following is a tally of recurring characters in the graphic novels, including every character to have appeared in two novels or more.
Names in italics denote characters that have not appeared in any aired episodes.

- Noah Bennet appears in more graphic novels than any other character.
- René has the most graphic novel appearances by a non-main character.
- Out of the characters not appearing on the show, Thompson, Jr. is the one with the most appearances.
- Monica Dawson, Samuel Sullivan and Simone Deveaux are the only main characters who have not been the focus of a graphic novel. Although Niki Sanders has not been the focus of a graphic novel, both Jessica Sanders and Future Niki have.
- Eden McCain is the first character to make a return appearance in a graphic novel, as well as the first non-main character to be the focus of a graphic novel.
- Wireless, Part 1 is the first graphic novel to focus on a character previously not seen on the show.
- Walls, Part 1 is the first graphic novel occurring in a possible future timeline with no present-day character appearance. Following other such graphic novels are: Walls, Part 2, Quarantine, The Man with Too Much Brains, Hana and Drucker's Plot Discovered, The End of Hana and Drucker, and Resistance.
- Walls, Part 2 is the first graphic novel to only feature no new characters.
- Maya y Alejandro is the first graphic novel to not feature any characters that had, at that time, appeared on the show.
- The Last Shangri-La is the first graphic novel to only feature characters still not seen on the show. Subsequent novels that feature characters who never appeared in episodes include A Lesson in Electricity, Bounty Hunter, and Moonlight Serenade.
- Aftermath was the first graphic novel with just two characters; it was followed by Super-Heroics, It Takes a Village, Part 3, Flying Blind, Petrified Lightning, Revolutionary War, Part 1, Revolutionary War, Part 2, Pieces of Me, What We Have Wrought, One Good Hero, Prodigals, Part 2, and Prodigals, Part 3.
