Source/Explanation
The Create Your Hero description for Santiago explicitly states that he has the power of accelerated probability.

For an archived discussion about Edward's ability, see Talk:Edward's ability.

Accelerated probability?

Is this for the upcoming Destiny webisodes? If so then shouldn't the power be combined with super speed or something (which bugs me; the writers seem to be drifting further and further from the typical "One person, one power" with each new release). -- FlamingTomDude 23:53, 20 November 2008 (EDT)

  • Totally agree. Probability should not mean also being able to run fast. - Rybo5000

One of the most powerful abilities?

Technically couldn't a possessor of this ability find the weakness of anything, solve the unsolveable, etc. He would be a valuable asset to the Company, in finding the successful formula or even the best way of targeting evolved humans?

As we know all abilities devlop, for example, Matt Parkman. Perhaps he can manipulate probability like Domino and Black Cat? If he was, let's say, in conflict with Sylar he could alter the probability of Sylar successfully attacking him with any of his abilities to an extraordinary high probability or if he fell out of a plane - he could alter the probability of him surving to 1(1 is the highest number as far as probability is concerned). --ACDC1989 09:06, 12 November 2008 (EST)

  • The ability doesn't manipulate probability, just predicts it.
  • I checked this ability up on www.activatingevolution.org and Santiago doesnt have Super Human Speed. He has Super Human Reflexes thats why he could avoid being hit by the truck and see how he can escape it. Typos 07:12, 17 November 2008 (EST)
    • A monkey can put all sorts of info there. Intuitive Empath 09:50, 17 November 2008 (EST)
      • To be less crude (no offense, Intuitive Empath) ActivatingEvolution.org is a useless site where anyone can put whatever they like on it. A monkey could indeed put info on there, so I wouldn't trust it with anything. -- FlamingTomDude 1:32, 19 November 2008 (EST)
  • If this is Kaito Nakamura's ability, this must be the way of how he created the formula...--NiveKJ13 13:47, 22 November 2008 (EST)
    • Who says that Kaito created the formula? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:34, 22 November 2008 (EST)
      • i dont know, I think Arthur mentioned it in It's Coming episode. Well, yeah, not him exactly, but maybe he helped a little or something lol, i dunno --NiveKJ13 17:54, 22 November 2008 (EST)
        • He said Kaito hid the catalyst, just that. Intuitive Empath 18:01, 22 November 2008 (EST)
          • And if this is kaito's power, he probably hid the catalyst in the most illogical place, because everyone knows he is a logical person, so they wouldn't think look where he actually put it. --Max16:26, 11 December 2008 (EST)

My Idea

Hey! I thought of this a while ago.

Mine was slightly different in that time freezes (not literally but for effect) then everything turns green and wireframed. The person then "scans" to find the best possible outcome.

And also coincidentally, my idea also made his ability good as a footballer.

"Accelerated probability is the ability to see what choice one should make when confronted with a situation, to predict the outcomes of certain situations, and then to accelerate oneself along that path of causality immediately."

is this accurate, people? If so, then Santiago can choose to a certain degree how he wants things to turn out. He can't alter probability, and can only do feats within his power, but this means he's still a pretty powerful guy. This ability would allow one to see the most beneficial future to Santiago (and presumably was beneficial to Kaito Nakamura when he was alive) but you couldn't directly learn knowledge or answers, it would only speed you along the path of probability that would best benefit you. It also seems to make use of lentation (in which time seems to have slowed down, when in fact the user has sped up, similar to Neo from the Matrix movies). Shadowulf1 17:46, 22 November 2008

  • I guess he could dodge bullets with easy. Dave 18:20, 27 November 2008

Inheritance from Santiago's Father

In Destiny, Part 3, the serious looking woman tells Santiago he inherited his gift from his father. I think Santiago's father should be listed as sharing the ability... if you inherit something from someone, it means it was also theirs. The woman doesn't say he inherited a gene, she says "gift" and to me that means Santiago's dad had the same gift Santiago has. In addition, the serious looking woman explains the attributes of Santiago's ability in detail and claims she knows of Santiago's abilities because his father worked for her organization as an assassin and they just followed the laws of genetic probabilities. It is also noted that his father's ability allowed his father to always get his mark.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:56, 27 November 2008 (EST)

She described his ability in detail? Shouldn't this be mentioned in the article somewhere, maybe in memorable quotes?--ERROR 16:47, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

Enlightning me

Can someone explain to me how accelerated probability extends to lightning? Either the ability is way more haywire than we thought, or it has a deus-ex-machina component. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 11:19, 2 December 2008 (EST)

  • I think it's the former. It was definitely a bit of a shock to me as well... I have a theory on how it might be explained: it's speculation, but I think the way it might work is that Edward can speed up air particles around him, such that they become ionized in a focused area (the ball). Once he gets them focused enough, he can direct them onto another person and electrocute the person. If I'm right, I'd very much like to see Daphne performing this trick... the special effects for it were awesome.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:55, 2 December 2008 (EST)
    • I don't know about that - I certainly hope Edward is a mimic, but AP has so far been kind of a catch-all as it is (so you can see in slow-motion - how does that make you run fast?). Besides, particles can't 'see' the paths, so there's no good reason for them to be able to accelerate along them or whatever the heck they said the power does. --Yamawhata? 16:44, 2 December 2008 (EST)
  • Perhaps the energy ball was made through the same aura that is generated when he super speeds. --User:Halfbreed1426
      • Going super fast and slowing down time for others are basically two ways of saying the same thing, imho. Anyways, Rayne at 9th Wonders had an alternate explanation: that since Edward runs super fast, his body creates a static charge like how friction from rubbing your feet on a carpet can create static charge. And since Edward's body would end up storing so much static electricity, he needs to be able to discharge it and this is one way he can do so. Both his and mine are valid theories, imho.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:33, 2 December 2008 (EST)
        • Interesting theory... it does make sense, I just think that we shouldn't have to speculate to that point. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 09:08, 3 December 2008 (EST)
          • I didn't watch the webisode but does he move alot before he creates the lightning? If so, perhaps he's building up extreme static? Edit: I probably shoulda read all the comments before speaking.--Riddler 09:24, 3 December 2008 (EST)
        • Static charge makes sense, I guess, but its not really the first thing that jumps to mind when you think of a guy with super speed. Hopefully they have an explanation in mind. --Yamawhata? 17:57, 3 December 2008 (EST)
      • Personally I dislike that Accelerated Probability means super speed and now lightning too. It's all too convenient; once you see the path you get there faster...Okay I can live with that. Edward's byproduct just seems silly, even by Heroes standards. Probability refers to possible outcomes and likely outcomes. Accelerated means faster. Together one would assume that the user could calculate probability a lot faster than a normal person, like Kaito in the deleted scene. I guess accelerated could be interpreted into some form of enhanced speed, but seriously; lightning? Sorry, but I think they've taken it too far.--FlamingTomDude 23:42, 3 December 2008 (EST)
        • I agree. I really hope they have an outstanding explanation for it. I would actually be more willing to accept that Edward is a special case and has two innate abilities - lightning and AP. (that might as well be true if AP produces byproducts as ridiculous as lightning) Sincerely, Thrashmeister [ U | T | C ] 23:45, 3 December 2008 (EST)
    • Edward's Lightning obviously is much different from Elle's. As well as creating an orange ball of electric energy when he discharged it. The electric animation didn't look like the typical fork shaped bolt Elle and the others use. But regardless I don't see how accelerated probability can give you an electric ability too. Also, if he does use static electricity how come Daphne doesn't? She runs even faster. There is no explanation how he controls and manipulates the static electricity either.--Dave
      • Ok, my own theory is somewhat related to probability, but I still think it is completely ridiculous. Basically, according to string theory, there is an infinite amount of parallel universes. In each different universe, a different possibility occurred. So, Edward uses his accelerated probability to calculate all possible universes until he finds a universe where he shoots lightning, and then manipulates probabilities until he can make that possible universe become true. Which would make this the best power in Heroes, since you can virtually do anything.--Referos 14:29, 5 December 2008 (EST)
  • (see green part of my signature)--Elemental Manipulator - When in doubt, ask BTE 05:28, 6 December 2008 (EST)
  • Hey maybe Edward's power is the ability to make the improbable probable and can therefore make improbable things happen (such as shooting lightning, or running really fast, stuff which while impossible in the real world has been made probable in the world of Heroes) Firemole 19:58, 16 February 2009

Do they refer to it as lightning?

In the webisode or anything related, do they refer to it as "Lightning"? If not, we can't call it Lightning, can we? I mean, it's not how it's normally presented (it's a ball), and there are other colors (God forbid.). If the "byproduct" is indeed "Lightning", we really have to go back and rename Future Ando's ability. It's mechanism is the same, and the only difference is the color. Here, the mechanism is different and it has different colors. If it was referred to as Lightning, ignore this comment.--Riddler 12:44, 5 December 2008 (EST)

  • If you have a Sprint phone, you might get confirmation by watching the "Secrets of the set" for "Destiny, Part 4". We've already been discussing this at Image talk:Powers ap lightning2.jpg, Riddler, so it's only fair to the others that I link that discussion. I'd add that there is a form of lightning in nature that's called "ball lightning" and here's a photo of it with colors that match this byproduct of Edward's ability. We could move it in the notes on the lightning page as 'unconfirmed' but I really don't think that should be necessary. As for Future Ando's ability, I think we'll get an answer to that in the next couple episodes. I'd rather wait before changing Ando's ability's name now cause we might find out it's something different. But if we don't, I agree it should also be lightning as that's the least speculative name and if Ando doesn't get the ability soon odds are he won't be getting it at all.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:27, 5 December 2008 (EST)
    • Right now we're listing Edward as having one ability with two byproducts. This all seems very dodgy to me. I don't think we can say conclusively that he has those abilities at all. Normally when something is as ambiguous as this, we say "Soandso's ability". I think we need to do the same thing here. We have never learned anywhere that Elle's ability can be a byproduct of accelerated probability or that it has anything to do with super speed. Frankly, I didn't think the special effects even really resembled Elle's ability all that much. I just sent an email to Kay Foster and Adam Armus, but I think we really need to remove the speculation about Edward's ability. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:46, 5 December 2008 (EST)
      • I've only watched Part 1 so far, and so am somewhat loathe to comment beore seeing the actual scenes, but I'll do so anyway, based on what I've gleaned from the discussion, knowing full well I may have to eat my words  :). If we're not willing to grant Future Ando 'lightning,' I don't see why we'd give it to Edward. It should really be renamed accordingly. Additionally, unless there's something in the episodes that states his byproduct is super speed, that should probably be changed also, especially considering the writers specifically say it is different from (and nowhere near as fast as) Daphne's ability. --Stevehim 17:15, 5 December 2008 (EST)
        • Agree. By the way, the scenes in question are in Destiny, Part 4. It's a good one. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:00, 5 December 2008 (EST)
          • If we don't want to assume the byproducts are super speed and lightning, I suggest just putting notes at the bottom of each page to note the resemblance and keep the info for Edward's abilities all on accelerated probability. Making separate pages for the byproducts (Edward's byproduct (I) and Edward's byproduct (II)???) that are not separate abilities in and of themselves doesn't seem practical to me and appears to me like it would just cause confusion.--MiamiVolts (talk) 23:55, 5 December 2008 (EST)

Probably Works Like This

I think Edward can generate the electrical arc because he accelerates the electrons within his hands. This could cause a build up of electricity (hence why we saw the arc buid up) and then he could release it. It is the same principle as static electricity but on a much grander scale. --Mc hammark 06:34, 5 May 2009 (EDT)

Edward's Effect

I know it's been rehashed a thousand times and it doesn't look like they'll ever revisit this power, but it seems to me like the assumption that what he's doing is creating an electrical arc or ball lightning might not necessarily be right, and that the force he generated was more likely "probabilistic forces" or whatnot. Because the power is based on assessing probability, perhaps it makes sense that a well-trained user could affect probability instead of just observing its possible outcomes. Until we know from a cannon source (again, I doubt this power will be seen again in cannon, so that's not too likely,) I think it's more of a leap to think Edward somehow can affect electrical currents, and that maybe we should take some of the electrocution-based language out of the article until we know for sure what he's doing. To me, it looks like he could be just making improbable biological effects happen in the serious looking woman's body, and this manifests itself as an involuntary bodily paralysis: basically he makes her natural metabolic processes go haywire and not work right. Just like someone like Black Cat in comics could make a seemingly-sturdy construction collapse with her "bad luck" powers, so too can Edward make a seemingly healthy person fall into semi-catatonia, and the electricity we saw was just the random probability power FX. I'm not saying that's what the writers were thinking when they did it, I'm just saying it makes the most sense, and until we know for sure we shouldn't assume one way or another. ~~

To me, that sounds like the most likely theory.--ERROR 11:54, 27 September 2011 (EDT)

I Think I've Got It

Humans naturally have a small amount of electric charge, especially at the fingertips. And this ability enables the user to accelerate themselves along the path that would lead to a maximized outcome. So what Edward might have done was simply calculate the best way to incapacitate the serious-looking woman, and determined that the most efficient mode of offense would be to build up the natural static charge in his body to the point where it could be used as an attack. Impossible for normal humans, of course, but with his ability to accelerate himself to the calculated outcome instantly, he just might be able to do that.--ERROR 22:13, 1 October 2011 (EDT)

edward's ability

I been watching this part the show over and over. In the scene he tells the agent that "We've always have choices" just before he creates a ball of "electrical" energy and shoots her with it. What I think he is doing is that he is showing her all the choices she could have made instead of the one she did. I think its possible that with enough practice someone with Accelerated Probablity can eventually allow someone else to view their own choices and the "Electrical" energy is the effect showing them using that part of the ability onto someone else. I think he may have over loaded her brain by making her see every choice she could have made and its outcome. Which is why she had smoke coming from her and why she fell to the ground. I don't think this part of the ability is lethal though since it the cameraa shows her opening her eyes just before the show ended but I do think it can be exhausting on the person though since their not equip to handle a power like that.
