Thanks for the clean ups!
It seems reading aloud and spell check still doesn't save my ass! Lulu 00:28, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
- No problem! Thanks for all the hard work on the character histories. A lot of us seem to be getting caught up in discussions and not paying much attention to the checklists, myself very much included.--Hardvice (talk) 00:31, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
- Not a problem. I get to feel like I'm actually contributing now. Lulu 00:34, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
Theory
Although I didn't put that note in there myself, "this has nothing to do with this theory" (assuming I'm looking at the right note in the history) is very relevant. Mr. and Mrs. Petrelli were founding members - what's the likelyness that their sons alter-ego was in on it with them? I doubt he was even born at that time.--Riddler 00:35, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
- The theory says that Adam is Peter's alter-ego. The author meant like Jessica is Niki's. Adam being a founding member of the Company could, I suppose, be a point against (since the Company was founded 30 years ago and Peter is only 28), but it doesn't really speak to the theory at all.--Hardvice (talk) 00:39, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
- It's very much so a point against. They're refering to the alter ego like Jessica to Niki- one in the same person, same body, though not the same mind. If Adam is Peter, Peter wouldn't have been born yet, or just a baby, and would have been a founder, which makes not a lick of sense.--Riddler 00:40, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
New calendars needed
- when you get the chance, new calendar images will be needed for the Timeline portal (SacValleyDweller (talk to me!) 17:41, 3 November 2007 (EDT))
Flag
- Could you grab a flag for the Italian localization as well while you're at it? (Admin 16:16, 4 November 2007 (EST))
Sorry
Yeah, I copied and pasted it; he had already made the page so there was no template button (and if there was, I didn't see it), so I copied the previous page. I think the page in general is a waste though, unless there is some citation of it's name.--Riddler 16:27, 5 November 2007 (EST)
- OK, cool. No problem. I just wanted to make sure we hadn't missed a template or something. :) --Hardvice (talk) 16:28, 5 November 2007 (EST)
- Hey, do you know why I'm able to move articles now? That option has never been at the top of my page, I'm fairly certain.--Riddler 17:50, 5 November 2007 (EST)
Danke mista!
- Thanks for the help on the Spoiler talk:Powerless page. I found it ironic that I myself was powerless against it.--Bob (talk) 05:26, 10 November 2007 (EST)
- I've added another option: Template:Spoilertext. It lets us do forum-style spoiler text, such as this: Darth Vader is totally Luke's father!--Hardvice (talk) 05:33, 10 November 2007 (EST)
Of course, not very many browsers support the :hover pseudoclass, so that one has limited usefulness. We could implement it with Javascript pretty easily if the need arises, though.Never mind, forgot to refresh around the cache on the other browsers to grab the updated Common.css. Works in IE, FF, Opera, and Safari.--Hardvice (talk) 05:37, 10 November 2007 (EST)- I've never been a big fan of using that forum approach on a wiki. Blacking out sections of spoiler text on articles doesn't really feel appropriate here which is why we have separate spoiler articles in the first place. In the case of complete episode spoilers like on Spoiler talk:Powerless I like the hidden table approach that was taken; it looks much cleaner than having blacked out text. I haven't read the spoilers yet, but I'm assuming they're complete spoilers of the episode. (Admin 08:32, 10 November 2007 (EST))
- I was thinking of this as more of an option for talk pages, where people might want to reply to a question with spoiler info, like this: Rosebud is a sled!--Hardvice (talk) 13:15, 10 November 2007 (EST)
- I agree with admin, think it detracts from the page. Cool idea though. It would look like the page was redacted by the FBI or something.--Mish 13:57, 10 November 2007 (EST)
- I was thinking more of use in talk pages than on spoiler articles themselves. I just used it on Episode talk:Out of Time to answer a question whose answer was spoilery. That's what I had in mind.--Hardvice (talk) 14:01, 10 November 2007 (EST)
- Spoilery answers shouldn't be on non spoiler talk pages though. Whenever I've had to answer a question on a regular talk page based on a spoiler I don't provide spoiler details. Plus I'm using a browser right now that shows the text even when it's hidden. So I would have seen that "Rosebud is his sled" spoiler without even doing anything. The best and safest way to address a spoilery question on a regular talk page is to either not include details or to provide a link to the spoiler article so they know what they're getting into. Foo
For some reason, whenever I want to do a test page, rather than "foo", I always use "Oswald". I chalk that up to my lack of experience in computer language prior to Heroes Wiki. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:52, 11 November 2007 (EST)
- To be fair, I switched to "Foo" because I got sick of typing "Uluru's girlfriend".--Hardvice (talk) 00:53, 11 November 2007 (EST)
Help:Portals
- Hey, we already wrote a Help:Portals over at Bionic Wiki, maybe it could help? I added a portion of it to Heroes Wiki's page already. Most of it stems from the new portal page help.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:24, 11 November 2007 (EST)
- Thanks. Of course, I was in the process of writing a lot of it and had to stop and clean up (adding to a portal is editing portals, not adding a new portal). I'll see if I can still merge my changes -- I copied them into notepad.--Hardvice (talk) 02:27, 11 November 2007 (EST)
- And actually, that stuff needs to be re-written. It's just notes and tables, not a help page, which should be, y'know, complete sentences and such.--Hardvice (talk) 02:28, 11 November 2007 (EST)
- By all mean, feel free to re-write it. I only ported part of the page, and I pasted it into the wrong section by mistake. Oops, sorry.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:31, 11 November 2007 (EST)
- Minor misalignments? Isn't that only a concern when you stack portals over portals (i.e. Portal:Portals)? I don't remember ever having a problem with the table in table method for portals anywhere else.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:44, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- You can check it out on pages with an incomplete row if you don't believe me. It's usually only off by a few pixels, but it's quite frequently off (seems to depend on the width percentage).--Hardvice (talk) 02:45, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- I believe you, just saying that I don't normally notice it unless I'm doing portal on portal stacking. In any case, it's not such a big deal that all the portals need re-doing immediately.--MiamiVolts (talk) 02:54, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Bot
- Got my bot working. There's a great Perl framework for MediaWiki. It's going to make writing bots so easy. I'll finish it up later today if I get time. Just give me a list of all the repetitive tasks that need to be completed and I'll program it to make the changes. FYI it has an easy method of returning a list of all pages in a given category, so any tasks that involve a specific category will be even easier. (Admin 03:03, 12 November 2007 (EST))
- Hot. I can't think of anything else I've been itching to do, but this will make it much easier if we split the timeline.--Hardvice (talk) 03:10, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- What is it exactly you wanted done with the Template categories? Are they being removed and replaced with nousercats for the other categories in the template or something? It may be something I can script if we need to edit all the templates. (Admin 03:13, 12 November 2007 (EST))
- Hadn't thought of that, but that may be something better handled by humans, since I think there are instances where we want to add a cat to a userpage (like Fan Powers). No, I was just asking if we could remove Category:Templates from templates which had other categories. When we started out, all the templates were in one cat. When I started subdividing them into smaller cats, I left them in the main cat, too, so Category:Templates would list all the templates. Now, though, it's more than one page, so it's wrapping some of the subcats onto page 2, and the list on Category:Templates is so long and messy that it's doing more harm than good. So I think it would be easier to find templates if they were listed in a subcat, but not in Category:Templates. I think they should all pretty much have a subcat, so we could just remove Category:Templates from all templates articles -- but if there's a way to make sure we're not removing the only category, that would be even better.--Hardvice (talk) 03:18, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- I can iterate through the list of pages in Category:Templates and remove the category tag as long as I detect another category tag on the page. Should be simple, I'll work on it later today. Have to get to bed now. (Admin 03:21, 12 November 2007 (EST))
- You remain, as ever, da man. That should help us catch any which aren't in subportals, since they'll be the only things left in the cat.--Hardvice (talk) 03:22, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- Don't know if you saw yet, but I had the bot go remove the Category:Template tags from the templates that are already categorized. By default the bot edits don't show up in recent changes, you may need to manually click on "Show bots." (Admin 18:19, 12 November 2007 (EST))
- Excellent. I will give it a look. ETA: Only 28 to categorize! Very nice!--Hardvice (talk) 18:27, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Can you please check this out?
Mechaseth's contributions.--Riddler 20:08, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- I was just waiting for a second act of vandalism. Lots of people are so new to the idea of a Wiki that they let their curiosity at being able to edit a webpage get the better of them. I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt -- once.--Hardvice (talk) 20:12, 12 November 2007 (EST)
- Yeah, we're more tolerant here than on some wikis. Since it's so simple to revert a change it's worth giving people more than one chance especially if you have time to sit and watch for more vandalism. (Admin 21:00, 12 November 2007 (EST))

- Well, with some obviously disruptive edits it's hard to assume good faith. :) Still, when reverting clear vandalism is so easy it doesn't really hurt to give people multiple chances. I can think of at least one unnamed user who got off to a discouraging start but subsequently became an excellent contributor. (Admin 21:11, 12 November 2007 (EST))
- We're also very lucky, in my opinion, that we don't really have a big "problem" with vandalism. Very few people have been blocked, and we don't have a lot of silly edits, or even edit wars, for that matter. I'm not really sure why this is, but I like to think that it's in part to our unofficial policy of being very tolerant. I was visiting some other wikis which will remain nameless, and it seems like were blocking people for very silly things (misinformation, repeated spelling mistakes)--in one case, I was really unable to figure out what the block was for, even after reviewing every one of the editor's contributions. We simply don't make a big deal about vandalism. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:20, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Screen Caps
- Hello there, I just realized that you are already uploading Screen Capture Images from "Four Months Ago". I thought the full episode was already available at NBC, but then I realized it wasn't... I just wonder, how did you do it, you have your PC hooked up to your TV or some crazy thing like that? Well anyways, I was wondering, since you are at it, can you upload some of the beginning of the scene in Zulia, Venezuela, where it actually says "Zulia, Venezuela" on the screen? I want to put it on the Zulia, Venezuela Page, 'cuz I couldn't find a cool image of Zulia, since it's a state, not a city. Thank you, --MeliPetrelli 03:30, 13 November 2007 (EST)
- I transfer the file off my TiVo using TiVo to Go (the software TiVo provides for it). It takes a while but the caps come out pretty nicely. I will definitely try to grab a cap of Zulia--we need one of the church anyway, since it's a new Place.--Hardvice (talk) 03:37, 13 November 2007 (EST)
- Cool now I have another reason to add to my "Please Honey get me TiVo 'Cuz:", hahaha... Thank you for the info and the screen caps. :) (MeliPetrelli 03:46, 13 November 2007 (EST))
A Little Guidance on Notes
- Hi, I just posted a piece of Trivia that I thought fit within the spirit of what we're trying to capture. It was the most significant continuity error I've seen with dialog between episodes. I agree it's most likely a production error, but very noticeable and seems like solid trivia to me. Thoughts?
- It actually happens all the time, though. They reshoot the scenes and words get changed here and there. Often, they'll rerecord the audio for the "previously on Heroes" section, too, to make things clearer. For example, in the episode were Matt finds out about Janice and Tom, the actual exchange had her thinking "oh my god, he knows". The next episode, it had "he knows about the affair". There doesn't seem to be anything particularly significant to the words that changed this time, so it's almost certainly the same thing. This really happens at least every other episode, and sometimes even more drastically.--Hardvice (talk) 05:55, 13 November 2007 (EST)
- First time I'd caught that. Thanks for pointing out. This definitely won't be useful then ;-), but I put together a little commentary video on that scene.--Stoaks (talk) 13:10, 13 November 2007 (EST)
- Actually, that's still pretty interesting. Greg Beeman talks about the scene a lot in the episode commentary and on hsi blog. Mostly, he talks about how they chose to refilm it from a different perspective, and to combine the two scenes which were split in Out of Time.--Hardvice (talk) 01:50, 14 November 2007 (EST)
- Agree. It's fun to spot something like that and then hear Greg or other writers and directors give their explanation. Question: I've been creating these little commentary clips for key scenes in each episode. Right now, the clips are wallowing in self pity over on YouTube (and soon will be aggregated on another website). What do you think is an appropriate way to make them available to folks? Are they appropriate to add under "see also"? --Stoaks (talk) 18:00, 28 November 2007 (PST)
- They're really nice and you've got some great comments. However, since they're essentially fan videos, they probably don't belong on main pages. But I think it's entirely appropriate to place them on talk pages (like Episode talk:Four Months Ago... or Talk:Adam Monroe) and on your user page. Keep up the good work, and let us know if you make any more videos! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:09, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Venezuelan sheriff
I'm heading to bed, but I just wanted to ask a quick question before I do. I'm assuming you've already checked, but does the HD version of Four Months Ago... reveal anything about the Venezuelan sheriff's name, or anything that might be on his badge? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:31, 14 November 2007 (EST)

Peter's cell ...
- I created the page, but I'm not sure what Portal to put it in. Would it fit in Portal:Education and Research?-- Lost Soul talk contribs 06:21, 14 November 2007 (EST)
- Since the other cells are on that page, and since they all pretty much have the same purpose, I'd say that's the best fit for it...unless we wanted to somehow make another portal just for the cells, but I don't think we're quite ready for that yet. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:32, 14 November 2007 (EST)
Redirect
I was poking around the help area trying to figure out the syntax for a redirect page. Found nothing, could you gimme a hand with that? Also, are there tags that can help with case sensitivity in the Search Box?--Mish(Talk) 21:17, 15 November 2007 (EST)
- To make a redirect, the page should generally be empty. Then type in #REDIRECT [[link]] where "link" is the new link you want to use. To see what it looks like, click here. You're right, though, there should be something about making redirects in the help pages. If there is something there already, I don't know about it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:34, 15 November 2007 (EST)

- First, I want to thank Hardvice for hosting this party. :) Second, RPG is a redirect to role-playing games. I would like to do a search for a term that is three letters or less. For instance, doing a search for "Pam" returns no results, despite the fact that "Pam" is included in the text of quite a few pages, and is even part of the title of a page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:59, 15 November 2007 (EST)
- This is something Admin would have to change. It looks like it was coded in to prevent HUGE returns on searches. If he wanted I'm sure he could handle a little Javascript magic and allow you to include a switch when you search to override the 4 character minimum. If you/he are interested its in the ajaxsearch.js module line 89.--Mish(Talk) 22:28, 15 November 2007 (EST)

- A few things about case sensitivity: one, the first letter is always case insensitive. Not much help with multi-word titles, but it helps a bit. The article naming convention is for lower-case words except for proper nouns and explicit titles, which also helps a bit. Now, there are ways around case sensitivity in templates (you can check for matches with both upper- and lower-case examples, or you can force terms to be upper- or lower-case for logic using ucfirst and lcfirst, but I don't know of a way to get the same effect when searching, unfortunately.--Hardvice (talk) 22:03, 15 November 2007 (EST)
Hmmm...
- I was wondering, is there a way to use css to alter the toolbox on the left? I know I can create User:Lost Soul/monobook.css... and in that, is there a code I can put which alters what goes in the toolbox? Basically, I'd like to put a few links in there for myself... like the current episode talk page, and the image cat... stuff I need regularly, to save time. Just wondering if it was possible. Cheers,-- Lost Soul talk contribs 13:43, 16 November 2007 (EST)
- So the userpage/monobook.css controls the style of your userpage? --Mish(Talk) 14:06, 16 November 2007 (EST)
- Yeah, it's possible to add custom CSS for just your account. It will be added to the system's default stylesheet for your skin whenever you are logged on. Since it's appended at the end, the cascade will allow you to override default CSS as well as adding your own classes and style blocks. It's fairly potent. Wikipedia has more on custom user styles.--Hardvice (talk) 14:21, 16 November 2007 (EST)
- AFAIK, it's probably not possible to modify the contents of the toolbox using just a user skin. The skin is responsible for the layout and the formatting, but the links come from the underlying system software (system message templates, actually, so they are editable, but only globally). Now, it is possible to use CSS in a page to make links appear all the way at the edge of the page with the sidebar (though it usually doesn't work out too well -- the only example I've seen successfully used was just covering up the entire sidebar with rainbow-colored flashing text reading "LOLDONGS", so the usefulness of such a method is ... limited.) But that only applies to the single page with the code on it. With a combination of user javascript and user css, it would be much easier to rewrite the toolbox, but user javascript is AFAIK disabled. Another option, which would probably be easier, would be to edit the toolbox to check and see if a userpage version for the logged-in user exists, and display that instead if it does. I'm not even sure if the logic is available (there's got to be a magic word somewhere for the logged-in user's name), and if it is, then that's something User:Admin would have to be involved in. I wouldn't be comfortable making changes to the basic way the site renders, even if the ultimate outcome only affects users on a one-by-one basis.--Hardvice (talk) 14:14, 16 November 2007 (EST)

- Another great option, if you use Firefox and are OK with Javascript, would be to write a Greasemonkey script.--Hardvice (talk) 16:25, 16 November 2007 (EST)

Theories page variable
Doing a quick search for theories+page returns about 100 character and other pages which use the page=
variable in the theories template. My guess is most people just borrow code from an existing page, not from a help page. Our best bet to eradicate the variable would be to go through each of those 100 pages and remove it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:10, 17 November 2007 (EST)

autodefensokinesis or whatever you called it
How'd you like you demonstrate that power? Just take two pictures of yourself (one reading the list and one of you and a window, not necessarily actually jumping out of it but implying it by leaning out it or something) and upload them with the names kinesissickness3 and 4 and we'll have a gallery for Heroes Wiki Heroes. --PeterDawson 23:57, 17 November 2007 (EST)

- I wouldn't want to add a whole lot more (or really, any more to the series crew), but right now the GN stuff is cake. Is "Other Graphic Novel" ok on the See Also? That's easy enough to change if you think it should be reworded.--Hardvice (talk) 00:48, 19 November 2007 (EST)
- Right now it says "Graphic Novel Other" which strikes me as odd, but I don't think I have a better solution. Maybe "Other Graphic Novel" or "Miscellaneous Graphic Novel"...I don't know, what do you think? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:51, 19 November 2007 (EST)
What programs do you use...
- For viewing/capping/demarking your screencaps? I'm just curious so I can get the size right next time. -- Seclusion talk / contribs 21:27, 20 November 2007 (EST)
- I use VirtualDub for capping and then edit using either Photoshop or Photoimpact. I've been using Photoimpact lately since it takes up less memory (the HD files are a resource hog) and I've got to say that while it takes some getting used to, I think it's actually easier to do most common tasks than it is in Photoshop.--Hardvice (talk) 22:06, 20 November 2007 (EST)
Quote Deletion
- Hey I just wanted to ask about my quote from "Truth & Consequences" being deleted(the one where Micah said he "told" the lights they needed to be off). You said in the version history that it "lacked context. I just wanted to ask why you thought that was-I'm not mad or anything. :-) Hypnometal 00:13, 29 November 2007 (EST)
- Some of the other quotes were deleted because they lacked context (specifically "it itches like a motherf-" (what itches? how is this memorable for this episode?) and "Welcome to life" (no context at all). The street lamp one wasn't; it was just moved to Technopathy, which is a better fit for it.--Hardvice (talk) 00:54, 29 November 2007 (EST)
sortkey
- We have a sortkey variable in the templates, right? There's a different MediaWiki-level sortkey feature... the DPL might be looking for that. (Admin 23:21, 29 November 2007 (EST))
- Nevermind, I was confusing that with the DEFAULTSORT feature. (Admin 23:22, 29 November 2007 (EST))
- Sortkey doesn't seem to be documented, but it seems to be picking up the catsort (i.e. the pipe text or defaultsort) for each category the article has (when there were variances, people sorted differently. I went through and standardized and now they're all the same.) Unfortunately, it's also including each catsort as a different result, even with distinct=strict. In other words, it actually works fine, but it picks up multiple results. Sucky. In fact, it does that no matter what I set ordermethod to.--Hardvice (talk) 23:24, 29 November 2007 (EST)

format
In the format attribute of some of this DPL code I see ². What's the ² do? (Admin 01:33, 30 November 2007 (EST))
- ²{ and }² are escape codes for template calls (i.e. {{ and }} respectively.)--Hardvice (talk) 01:34, 30 November 2007 (EST)
Idea I thought I could run by you
- I had a thought: a discussion template, similar to the one on Lostpedia. I've always thought that it's hard to get community-wide consensus, because people often don't know what needs to be discussed. So a template, along with a "Pages requiring discussion" category, would help this, I think. What do you think? Thanks!-- Lost Soul talk contribs 15:32, 30 November 2007 (EST)
- It's an option. Generally, though, if there's something that needs talking about, we'll post a link on the community portal. One thing we can do with the new extension is post links to, say, the twenty most recently active non-userspace talk pages. That would require less maintenance than a template.--Hardvice (talk) 15:40, 30 November 2007 (EST)
- Actually, I think we also can stick the contents of Category:Pages to be renamed into Current events using the new dpl extension. I don't think we need an extra discussion template either.--MiamiVolts (talk) 15:42, 30 November 2007 (EST)
- Check out the "Active discussions" section on Current events. Is that kind of what you had in mind?--Hardvice (talk) 16:23, 30 November 2007 (EST)
- Yeah, sort of. It's a nice compromise. :) And if there are any decisions which really need consensus (like Talk:Liquefaction), we can put a link in Current events, as we did with Talk:Electromagnetism. Right?-- Lost Soul talk contribs 03:02, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- Who would have thought DPL would become such a useful extension! (Admin 03:07, 1 December 2007 (EST))
- Does it seem to be creating any unnecessary server load? I worry, because it amounts to a whole bunch of on-the-fly transclusions. But I agree--it's a great find.--Hardvice (talk) 03:30, 1 December 2007 (EST)
- So far so good. The server is pretty powerful so I wouldn't worry about it too much. With the finale coming up we should get a nice test if the finale winds up being as popular as the season one finale was. (Admin 04:04, 1 December 2007 (EST))

Thanks for the message about Jaime Ray Newman's portrait. I think I messed up a bit on Eijiro Ozaki's profile as well... I'll try and clean up and find more on editing. Thanks again! User: Genesis93
