Saving Charlie
Hiro teleports to a primitive clearing where he sees a dozen half naked men, smeared with dirt, sweat, and blood-colored paint. They all look at a bound and gagged prisoner, and the shaman who stands behind him. Hiro describes the shaman as a "phantasm, a vision from [my] worst dreams", wearing a Zapotec mask like the one in Charlie's apartment. The shaman moves around the prisoner and plucks a golden knife from the fire. The shaman moves behind the prisoner with the hot knife, and prepares to plunge it into his brain in a trepanning ritual. Just as the tip of the knife touches the prisoner's head, Hiro screams, and the shaman and the other men run towards Hiro. Hiro teleports away a split second before the shaman reaches him. (Chapter 43)
Hiro teleports to a funeral in the early 1960s, and is happy to be away from the scary shaman. (Chapter 44)
Hiro wonders why his out-of-control time traveling took him to the Zapotecs. (Chapter 47)
