Category

Taking in consideration there is a category for evolved humans with synthetic abilities, should we consider making a category for evolved humans who had their abilities removed? It's consistent with some other categories, such as characters with the Shanti virus. Intuitive Empath 14:02, 31 October 2008 (EDT)

    • At first, I was thinking just about the ones who had their powers removed by Arthur, but now that you mention it, I'm in doubt. The Haitian, the ability negation pills and the Shanti virus all suppress abilities, but they don't effectively remove them, the Haitian was able to use his power after being cured, but I think that there are special cases, most notable Sylar, who after being cured still retained his original ability, but lost all but one of his acquired abilities. The category would work for all characters who were powerless for a while, even so even if Peter or Maya got their powers back they'd still fit the category, but then we'd need an "abilities restored" category too. Peter, Maya, Sylar and Adam are the only ones who fit the category right now, maybe we should wait until there are more characters? Intuitive Empath 11:27, 1 November 2008 (EDT)

Power template

Hi there RGS, I just had a question I wanted to ask... if you look at Template:Power, you'll see that a lovely ability created by Bentonyang is still listed in the list of abilities... I've been trying for the past few minutes to get rid of it, but I can't seem to figure out what exactly to edit to remove it. Any tips? Image formats

Do images have to be in .JPG format, or can we upload others such as .PNGs? I'm asking because jpegs usually have for the lack of a better word, a rather crappy quality, and it really shows in some of the images. --Ciwey 03:54, 6 November 2008 (EST)

    • Just a small note, that .jpg format tends to be more common here cause it's scales better. We often use the same image for multiple portals, in which case it will be resized using the image tag (and .png and .gif don't do that as well). List of abilities

I'm confused about something...See, Santiago have the abiltiy of "Accelerated probability", I know this, because it was mentioned in this Comic Con Video 1. And isn't Kaito Nakamura's ability the same as this one?...

My question is, How am I gonna type it in List of abilities...in "Unkown Abilities" section or "Deleted DVD scenes" section, or do I make one for each...since Santiago is not from the DVD deleted scenes.NiveKJ13 11:47, 8 November 2008 (EST)

      • Actually, you're right--and Santiago is a spoiler right now, so he doesn't belong on the non-spoiler page at all. I left the link to the Comic-Con video since it gives the name. It's a bit of a leap to say that what Kaito did in the deleted scene is the same as the name released in a video about somebody else completely, but I don't think there's much harm in it since ultimately it's a deleted scene. 1 person, 2 abilities, should have 2 pages...

Is it possible that one hero can have more than 2 abilities, without absorbing from others...?

coz I really think that some have 2 powers like Knox, He's got Fear Absorption and Enhanced Strength...and the Santiago, I think he's got Accelerated Probability and Enhanced Speed. Aren't we suppose to make 2 different pages for each ability they have?NiveKJ13 07:04, 9 November 2008 (EST)

  • Mr. Bennet told Sylar that everybody they had come in contact with at that point had only possessed one ability each (Fallout). The only person I know of who is listed as having two abilities (other than through some form of absorption) is Brendan Lewis--and even then, I'm not convinced that his regeneration wasn't an aspect of his plant manipulation...but that's another story. No, I don't think Knox has two abilities--he has the ability of enhanced strength which he gets by feeding off the ambient emotions of others. The strongest cases for somebody with more than one ability is Hiro (who can stop time, teleport, and travel through time) and the Haitian (who can block the abilities of others and can erase memories). But it's been shown a few times that even these guys have only one power--Hiro said he can manipulate space and time (which is the umbrella for everything he does) and we've called the Haitian's ability "mental manipulation" as a catchall for everything he does. I think it's too early to tell much about Santiago's power, but you can bet dollars to donuts that he's only got one ability.     • ok...but then, if tomorrow in Heroes: Destiny, when the webisode showed that Santiago have Super Speed and Accelerated Probability, are you gonna make 2 different pages.       • Kaito does not have that ability, or any ability at all. What you are referring to is a deleted scene. If we make a page about accelerated probability, Kaito's name can go in the notes and nowhere else. But unless they're explicit in saying that Santiago has two powers, we will make one page that describes his one power. I don't yet know what power that will be, but I imagine it will be super speed. I also imagine that if he's able predict probabilities, it's because his brain works at super speed, too, which is a little different than the super speed we've seen from Daphne. Question about images

Hey. I wanted to create a page for the explosion future Ando (even though it would have very little on it), and I was trying to use this image, but even using the thumbnailing piping or pixel specifications (200x250px), I couldn't get it to look right in the portal (the bottom half seems to be all white). I was wondering if there is another way to get it as a portal image, or if I'd need to edit it and reupload it. Beyond that, I was wondering if you had any suggestions as an alternative to creating his page. I mainly wanted to do it for two reasons:

  1. He was mentioned a bunch and played a part in how Future Hiro behaves (and we have pages for other minor future characters like Crane boy and Parkman's son).
  2. To note the conflicting stories of his death. Future Peter tells Ando that he died in the explosion (Five Years Gone) but Ando tells Hiro that Sylar killed him, using the final 9th Wonder issue as evidence. (The Hard Part)

Question about punctuation

I looked on the editing page, but didn't see it there. When listing an episode at the end of a sentence, does the period go before or after it? I noticed you placed it after in a recent edit (so assume that's correct), but it seems to go before in a lot of places throughout the site. And would the same rule apply to the examples of abilities sections? Also, I was looking at the redirects, and am not exactly sure how it works. Do I just edit the page and put the redirect command in? (eg - On the Ando (explosion future), goto edit and type #REDIRECTAndo Masahashi (explosion future))?Thanks. --Stevehim 17:20, 10 November 2008 (EST)

  • Check help:cites. There are no set-in-stone rules, but there are some guidelines. Really, it depends how it's used. If the cite can be used for the entire paragraph, then it makes sense to put it outside the paragraph. If it can be used for only a part of a sentence, it should go at the end of the part it refers to. If it is a reference for an entire sentence within a paragraph (and there is another sentence that follows that does not need the reference), then it goes inside the sentence. Here are some examples:
    1. Peter fights Sylar at Homecoming. Then he falls off the roof and Claire thanks him. (Homecoming)
    2. Peter absorbs flight from Nathan (Genesis), but loses it to Arthur (Dying of the Light).
    3. Peter is Claire's uncle (Distractions). This would mean that if they ever dated, it would be really icky.

(which is what got me into messing with collapsible tables), because I wanted a one-stop-shop kinda point of quick-reference to be able easily jump to any episode or GN and either its main-page, or its image-page...without having to drill through other pages, and menus, etc...and also that would list the numerical value of each epi/gn because sometimes folks refer to them that way, and I can't always remember what number is what, and have to go digging to find it.

I made this as a template, with as small a footprint as possible, and am now using it on my userpage; but was wondering if there would be a place on the main board this would be useful for with other members. Any ideas? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 11:05 (EST)

  • It needs a little bit of cleaning: I would put the full number of the episodes, so 308 for Villains instead of just 08. The first three S2 episodes need to have space between the episode name and the "images" link. Shouldn't we italicize the episode and graphic novel titles, and not italicize the "pages" and "images" links? I would also switch the order of the rows: put the episode number, then the title, then page link (but I would call it "episode page" or "graphic novel page" or something) and finally the image page. Finally, the bottom needs to be rounded. Nice job putting War Buddies, Part 7 in two spots--looks great.

    • Point 1) I started with the season number '308' in the numbering, then realized after I had them all entered, that it looked redundant, since they are grouped by season, and when you're in the 'Season 3' list, you know 08 is 308...so I took the season-prefix off, to let the season heading handle that.

      Point 2) I agree about italicing the title, and normalling the 'page/image' links...will do that.

      Point 3) I also started with it ordered as number, epi, page, image; but since the episode names are all different sizes, it makes it very unreadable that way; in this order, every thing is in clean, straight columns...I was trying for a more sophisticated template that was quick and clean; and that is why I tried to mimimize extra redundant text in the rows...('Page' instead of 'blah blah page', etc...) because after a few uses, it would be easy for anyone to catch on to how it works. It's really intended to be a fast, quick-reference tool from getting to where you want to go.

      One thing I wish I could figure out how to do with the collapsible table feature, is remove the forced double-space (extra blank row) between each table...who is our resident wiki-code expert who might know if this is doable? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 11:26 (EST)

      • I'd suggest perhaps considering to add it to Heroes, and I agree you should make it display as initially collapsed as it's rather big. Ryan said he'll work on it tonight for you, but if you want to try yourself here's a couple tips: 1) remember that a header row is always required for collapsible tables to work properly, and 2) it's a good idea to always put a width= attribute to prevent shrinking...if you look at the code on the Nielsen Ratings article, that could help you with the spacing issues.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:07, 13 November 2008 (EST)

          • I don't make it a habit to unblock people that repeatedly insert silly information into articles ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11]). It would have to be a pretty convincing argument, if you ask me. But ultimately, though I have the ability to unblock Linderman Mendez, I have never blocked him. He was blocked once as a warning, ignored it, and blocked again infinitely for messing with a widely-used template ([12], [13], [14])--this may have been an inadvertent mistake, but his history is certainly blockworthy. Keep in mind that both these blocks were given by somebody else. I support my fellow administrators, so I would not reverse the block without the blocker's go-ahead. Further, I really agree with the decision to block him. Those silly edits destroy the integrity of the wiki, demean the hard work and dedicated contributions of others, and create a big headache for those who have to reverse the vandalism. Linderman Mendez may certainly send me an email as I described above, but I'm not sure how much good it will do. Ability names

Future Peter - Object displacement

  • I just noticed that in the first episode, The Second Coming, when Future Peter sent Matt into Africa, he didn't really teleported Matt in there, if he did then he would've also be with Matt in Africa then travelled beck to the previous location; Future Peter just touched Matt and sent him into Africa...and as you can see, in the Unknown Abilities in the Abilities article, theres an Object displacement abiltiy, meaning touching an object and then sending them to unknown locations...what do you think?NiveKJ13 13:11, 13 November 2008 (EST)

  • And about Arthur Petrelli, in the episode Eris Quod Sum, when he made Sylar float in the air while talking to him.     • I would never doubt the advanced nature of Arthur's abilities. He is deft and nimble, and he is much more powerful than we know. However, others have held things in place without holding out their hands. For instance, Sylar held Mohinder on the ceiling and Peter against a wall and began to cut open his skull, all at the same time, and I don't remember him motioning to Mohinder.   • Ryan told me the names of the real-life girls he used as models for the three cheerleaders. They are friends of his. He also asked that those names be kept quiet to sort of protect his friends' identities. I think I published them at one point and then deleted them at his request, but I can't remember now. Because he asked to keep them private and because they're the names of real people (not the names of the girls in the comic), it's probably best that we don't use them at all. Playing with Fire

I got an email from Zach Craley. I told him that some people have said that the sailor in the end of Playing with Fire is supposed to be Nathan. It would make sense from the timing (they would have met about 18 years ago), and it'd be a cool ending. I know Nathan was a pilot, but I wasn't sure if he was a sailor. I also asked Zach what happened to Mrs. Gordon, Meredith's mom?

I'm glad so many people picked up on the tie-in at the end. Michael Gaydos would have to confirm whether or not that's actually Nathan, but I did suggest that he could be present in the script. So yes, the timing is right--but maybe not necessarily the moment she met Nathan, in case that is territory they ever want to explore in the show. Nathan became a Navy Pilot and attended Annapolis. Flint generalizes by calling them all "sailors," cause he's a colloquial kinda guy.

I submitted some info for the assignment tracker that would fill in what happened to the mother and where they live, not sure if that's gone live yet? Don't want to spoil anything if it hasn't, or in case something has to change.

So bottom line, it looks like Nathan being in the novel is up for personal interpretation, but we probably shouldn't include it on our pages. No, I don't have Michael Gaydos's contact information, but not for lack of trying. I'm still looking for the password to that assignment tracker profile.   • Actually, I just read the AT profile, and it never calls the father "Flint". Flint, Jr.'s name is Junior, but that doesn't mean his father's name is Flint. I was named after an uncle, and as a youth was called Junior. Many kids are named Junior if they are named after a grandparent, etc. David H. Lawrence XVII was not named after his father (though that's a different story, isn't it?)   • I don't know of anything that says that Jessica was older than Niki. In Distractions, Niki talks about listening to her sister play the piano--some have felt that implied that Niki was younger. Transcripts

I am really sad that www.kilohoku.com has died. (The site that hosted Heroes Transcripts). I think I put together all of the 1st season episodes into one html file for you a couple years ago....I have saved off, all of Season 1 and 2 transcripts. (In their kilohoku format)....I am thinking about starting a project to gut and clean them down, and working through all of them, and reducing them down just to the actual on-screen spoken text; to have as a reference. All they would contain would be the Episode title, and the dialogue...that way, I am not infringing upon kilohoku (if they even still exist), but just re-representing the transcripts as they are from the episodes themselves. I would eventually like to have them drilled down cleanly enough to start building up a wiki-page for each epi transcript; that can be linked from the epi-page. If all of this goes well; I would like to endeavor to transcribe the GNs. Yes, I have already done Monsters....I am off to a blazing start there. What do you think of the idea of inclusion of transcripts on the wiki? (If not for whatever reason), what would you think of an off-wiki website that I happen to stumble upon that has all of the transcripts; and then linking to it? Just kinda thinking outloud on this...I use to use the transcripts alot; and if this is a project that can be accepted at the wiki; I would like to get underway with it as time is available.     • I contacted kilohoku awhile ago about using her transcripts, and she granted me permission (provided I follow a few stipulations). I have put them on my blog in pretty much the exact format they were on at kilohoku. (Actually, I have a few more to put on from S2, I'm just being lazy.) I'm not real comfortable putting them on the wiki, but a blog is a good idea. I talked about the idea of getting people together to do the S3 transcripts here, but people either didn't see the post or weren't interested. If you're interested, we can link to my blog etc. It's not a project I want to work on alone--I'll make you an administrator on the blog, if you want.           • Question about labeling on the transcript blogs. From what I am seeing in the wiki side, we are just using the name part of the label to do our linking with. However, on the transcript blogs; we have labels for both the name, and the numerical value. To me, if we aren't using the numeric label for anything, I want to get rid of it, because it just clutters up the TOC. What we can do, is remove the numeric part of the lables; and then edit the actual Title; so that the TItle itself (which we don't use for linking) is formated like so: "101: Genesis", or "112: Partners", etc. That way, anyone who goes there can still have the benefit of our inclusion of the number (in the title); but the label itself will just be the epi-name, which is what we use for linking back to the wiki, and what shows in the TOC.               • Just playing around with things, using Going Postal P1 as a test-case. I take the label from "001, Going Postal Part 1" (which is a two-part label indexing both 001 and the name because of the comma operator; and change it to be "001: Going Postal Part 1", it now only shows once, and only has one label indexed. If I do the following search, it finds it in this format: "http://heroes-transcripts-webisodes.blogspot.com/search/label/001:%20%20Going%20Postal%20Part%201". So....since we have all of our webisodes, GNs, and Episodes numbered; is there a way to modify the { {seealsotranscripts}}, { {seealsotranscriptsgn}}, and { {seealsotranscriptsweb}} templates so that besides dynamically embedding the { {PAGENAME}} into the search url; we also prefix the PAGENAME with the number in "001: " format? If we could do that, then we could just change all the labels on the blog entires to "999: Title", and then the seealsotranscript templates will still find them; and we will only have one list in the TOC, which includes both the number and the title. I am not exactly sure where the PAGENAME template is being generated from, and if there is a similar variable that keeps up with the Epi number.                 • If the issue is the big TOC on the right side of the blog, there's a way to make it smaller in a drop-down menu. I just have to figure out how to do it. The problem with changing the label to "001: Going Postal Part 1" is that the labels wouldn't be alphabetic, only chronological. Plus, getting the number to print automatically on the seealsotranscript links is not very easy. I could probably do it, but it would be very messy and we run the risk of glitches. By the way, PAGENAME is a magic word, not a template. There's no way to alter it or change it at all. I believe it's just an inherent part of MediaWiki. Let me see what cool stuff I can do over the Thanksgiving break about the TOC.   • There's a few ways. Typing the name of your article in the search bar is the easiest. For instance, type "User:Tristan0709/ARTICLETITLE" in the search bar. Then, click the red link that is created at the top of the page, and begin editing. Another way is to create a red link on your own user page, then click that red link. Bottom line, you need to create a red link, click it, and begin editing. Check out Help:Editing#Adding New Pages, too. Caged Bird vs Caged Bird, Part 1 - Category

Noticed that you renamed the GN appending , Part 1 to it. Cool, glad to see more are coming. I've been going through and updating all pages to now point append the Part 1 suffix. I updated the images as well, but I can seem to figure out how to either:

1) Move Category:Images from The Caged Bird ---> to ---> Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1 or 2) Create this category (Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1)...is that an admin only power?

Right now, all of the images from that GN are stranded in lah-lah land. What am I missing to get their Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1 set up correctly? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/25/2008 14:35 (EST)

  • Nevermind...I figured it out, I think. However, I did notice what appears to be a wiki bug. Here were the steps to recreate.
1) Before the new [ [Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1]] was created, I went in and changed all of the edit-details of the images for it
from: { {image-screenshot|The Caged Bird=t}} to { {image-screenshot|The Caged Bird, Part 1=t}}...adding the ", Part 1" suffix.

2) Since the new Image Cat hadn't been created yet, of course the images didn't list the image cat at the bottom of their pages.

3) "After" the new [ [Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1]] was created however, when I would go to any of the pictures, they still weren't showing the category at the bottom of the page.

4) I could go into edit-mode on those pics, preview, and without making any changes, the cat would now show at the bottom. (so I ended re-saving all of them without making any changes to them, to get their [ [Category:Images from The Caged Bird, Part 1]] to show at the bottom.) One suggestion would be to leave a kind message on Blairwitch's talk page pointing him to the discussion. He's young and he's brand new to the site, so he might not know about the discussion pages or even how a wiki community works. I know I didn't when I first started editing wikis! User Raiku & Santiago's ability

  • I didn't think there was anything conclusive. The best information I found was in the latest Behind the Eclipse when Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite said that Santiago has super speed as a byproduct of his accelerated probability. That's not a canon source, but it's excellent information and usually pretty reliable. Does that mean that he only has one ability? That's debatable. I look at it much like Brendan Lewis's dual ability--he has regeneration as a result of his plant manipulation. However, if you're looking for canon or near-canon sources, look no further than Create Your Hero, which is part of Heroes Evolutions. The description for Santiago is pretty explicit in saying he has two abilities: "He has the power of accelerated probability. Not only that but he realizes he can run super fast! Combined, the two abilities make him unstoppable." With all that information combined, I think we need to have Santiago's name on super speed and list both powers on Santiago's page (in the infobox, in the Abilities section, etc.) However, when we're linking the power from other pages, we should generally link to accelerated probability. We don't need to add many examples of Santiago's ability to the examples of super speed--I think just the mention on the power's main page is probably sufficient. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:36, 26 November 2008 (EST)

      • Yes, I have actually watched the webisode. Numerous times, in fact. There is no need for a "trumping" in this case because there is no conflicting information. They are in harmony. The Heroes Evolutions content which shaped the webisodes (Create Your Hero) specifically states that Santiago has two powers. The webisodes never say that he has only one power. The serious looking woman describes Santiago's power to him and explains some of the byproducts of it. That goes right along with what writers said in the latest Behind the Eclipse, that super speed is a byproduct of accelerated probability. We can't ignore one source because it's "some game"--it's a legitimate near-canon source with terrific information that gets reviewed, edited, and approved by the writing staff before it is published. No doubt Kay Foster and Adam Armus used that information to write the webisodes. The Santiago article is just as much an article about the character you see in the webisode as it is an article about the character created by Create Your Hero. Quite simply, we're using all the sources we're given (which are all really in harmony) to create a big picture of what we know: Santiago's power is called accelerated probability. It allows him to do the things we've seen and which SLW described. Super speed is a byproduct of his main ability. GN + TV

  • It's a hierarchy. Live actors and episodes are at the top of the list and graphic novel characters are lower down. If we have people multiple levels of the hierarchy, they get lost and people don't know where to find them. Really, the only reason we have a portal of characters from Daphne-related graphic novels is because if we put all 209 graphic novel characters in one portal, it would be huge. Imagine, then, adding all the characters who appeared in both graphic novels and in episodes. Yikes! And really, it would only be fair to extend that same dual portalship to places, location, abilities, items, etc. Now we're talking about adding any power that's ever been shown in a graphic novel to Portal:Graphic Novel Abilities. Any world location that's ever been featured in a graphic novel would be added to both Portal:Locations and Portal:Graphic Novel Locations. It continues... The bottom line is that there's no easy solution. Yes, you're right, new users sometimes get lost. I could make the same argument, though, that new users would get lost if we had each character in multiple portals. It would be like having parallel portals instead of a trickle-down hierarchy. ......     • I'm still struggling to see any logical reason not to. If a character appears in both, put them in both. It doesn't create excessive space (since navbars and such appear at the bottom of the screen). I mean, I don't get how people are more likely to not "know where to find them" if they're in both areas (areas which would then be linked to each other); not including characters on their respective "related story" portals makes it seem very disjointed. But I think you're wrong about the volume of work that would be added if we changed the rule. I'm stressing that only things that have appeared distinctly in both GN and TV should have dual status and that's a low number of things. --Matchu 09:29, 26 November 2008 (EST)

  • No problem. I had a feeling it was something like that, where you're just practicing editing. A good place to do that would be at Heroes Wiki:Sandbox, where you can make as many edits as you want, and it won't really affect the rest of the site too much. You can also edit your user page all you want with no serious consequences. We don't encourage practicing editing on "real" pages because people search for that information and it's important that it's always as current and accurate as possible. Arthur's powers sources

I saw you changed the note about Arthur to reflect that we don't know where he got mental manipulation from. I don't really object to this (though I feel it's within acceptable speculation), but the same information would also have to be changed in his Evolved Human abilities section on his page. It lists him having gained mental manipulation from Peter there, as well as space-time manipulation, telekinesis and precognition (and we'd have to change the precognition source on Arthur's drawings page, and al of the references to where Arthur got the abilities on the power pages). If we're not assuming he got mental manipulation from Peter, we can't really say he got any of those from his son either, can we (I would think lightning is fine since that what he demonstrates upon stealing Peter's abilities, and possibly empathic mimicry since it was confirmed in an interview). I just wanted to get your opinion before doing all the changes. --Stevehim 21:07, 28 November 2008 (EST)

Clarify

Hi, I thought that when we did the supporting/recurring cast overhaul thing, it was agreed that once a character has 3 appearances, he/she is considered "recurring character"? But on this page, you say that a character needs 4 appearances to be considered recurring. Has the standard changed, and what is the real standard right now? thanks.
